lore kinda states that your guys are best of the best but frankly my head cannon is that aliens just dont fuck with regular military and your base just has better radars and a spy net that detects weird activity and alien airships.
Its because the regular army has no way to detect these alien activities without the use of a 'specially designed' radar, but the biggest reason is that they do not have any knowledge about the existence of aliens in the first place. alien presence has been kept secretive around the world to reduce suspicion and panic/hysterias, as the governments from both west and east created the xenonauts after the 'iceland incident'.
Most npc friendlies are like this, but I got to give credit where it's due. One time, I deployed my troops into a terror attack, and when my troops exited the helicopter, there was one npc soldier with a pistol in the road. The first turn, this dude survived from 3 aliens shooting at him. He ran into a supermarket and later came back out of the supermarket bleeding (I later learned the dude killed an alien inside the market) and then he ran to my secured zone front lines and helped me take out an additional 2 aliens and he survived it all, meanwhile my guys with advanced weaponry, and armor that have been trained for this exact scenario kept missing their shots and nearly dying trying to secure the LZ.
I wish I was recording during, but I was once ambushed by two sebellians right after deploying from the drop ship and was totally out of TU. First sebellian shot his buddy square in the back of the head, then promptly ran into the middle of my soldiers and ran out of TU to fight back.
This is a reason why Xenonauts 2 is better than Xenonauts 1, NPC do more dumb stuff and its so funny, first guy ran into teleporter and died in ufo, now this lmao
We had an ADF trooper open up on some cleaners in an earlier mission. Sadly they fired through the squad and unalived one of our best soldiers and missed the enemy completely...
He died of shame.
I don't blame him at all.
Emotional damage
In Xenonauts 1 I always wondered why the regular army can't deal with the aliens. Not anymore

Bruh took psychic damage from that shameful display
So did I when I saw it happen while playing!

The aliens are here to stop us from killing eachother
It does feel like an intervention doesn't it

Maybe he wanted to defect
Sounds more like a Russian soldier in Ukraine.

Love a Phros short
It's a realistic outcome!
Lmfao
He died of cringe
Xenonauts 1 felt so much more bleak, but more on topic i remember one time having a guy actually saved from certain death by an armed civilian nearby
