    Hey Dan......I know this is an old video , so you probably won't see this comment. But heck yeah man.......that was some awesome fishing! I'm a fellow free diver fisherman / crabber myself , and those fish you caught gave me some major inspiration for this next season. Awesome video btw!

    No we do not use scuba, only freediving. When we are using the reels, we let the fish run as we swim back to the surface, then we manage the fish from the line. It is not like fishing with a rod and reel. The reel on a speargun is only designed to let line out, then once the fish is in the boat, I reel the slack line back in to the reel.

    @divebobber, I was on Al's trip to central Baja for the part with the big WSB, Yellowtail, and Halibut.

    Great video. Awesome fish. Here in the Great Lakes, (LkMich) visibility is frequently poor, sometimes less than 2'. Great is 15 but seldom. All we can spear is rough fish, Burbot the most common. Fairly easy as they are bottom dwellers within shipwrecks. Would love to do some ocean spearing sometime.

    Generally, the outer kelp beads are better for WSB, but I have seen them in very shallow water, although they are more spooky. Good technique and calm disposition is always a good approach.

    Nice shooting: both the spear and the camera.

    My buddies and I like to go spearfishing in the kelp forests off the Santa Barbara coast. We are students at the university so as of now spearfishing is just a recreational activity and therefore we only hunt near the coast (50ft depths). We have been successful in hunting Lings, Calico, and Cabazon, but would like to approach the next level in hunting White Sea Bass and Yellowtail. In order to find these species of fish, would we need to go in deeper water or can they be found at these depths?

    The camera is built into my mask. It is made by Liquid Image. You can find them online. I am currently using the 324 which is even better than the one I was using for this video.

    a slip tip? there so if you shoot a bigger fish it wont either strugle and tear off or bend your shaft. if that was your question

    @3zooz1010 Thanks. The water temp varied from 50° in Northern California to 70° F in Mexico.

  • @freedivingdan
    @freedivingdan  12 років тому

    That is also true, but I spend a lot of time hunting is murky water. The fish need to be very close to get a shot and that requires the diver to be very calm and attentive.

    dan out of curiosity, can u sell a speared fish at the local fish market or restaurant?

  • @freedivingdan
    @freedivingdan  13 років тому

    @RstyH00k In the beginning, I shoot the vermillion with a 65cm gun, then the olive rockfish, sheephead and lingcod with a 75cm gun, All the big fish were shot with a 115 cm O.ME.R Enclosed Track gun.

    Great video! I Just ordered a liquid vision and can't wait totry it out ice diving and then in the keys. I like the music, who is the band?

  • @freedivingdan
    @freedivingdan  11 років тому

    According the california fish and game website, you would need to have a commercial license. Other states may have different rules.

  • @freedivingdan
    @freedivingdan  12 років тому

    Any computer that tells you your bottom time and depth, then once on the surface, an automatic stopwatch and recall of your last dive profile.

    just wondering what camera and mount you use and where i can get it.

  • @freedivingdan
    @freedivingdan  12 років тому

    Your question is very vague. For this reason, I can not answer your question. Try asking yourself: what you want to hunt, what region of the world, how deep you want to dive, what water temperature, the migratory, feeding, and breeding habits of the target fish, what water temperature you are comfortable diving in, what the weather will be like when you plan to dive, etc. If you answer all these questions, you will know where you should dive. good luck.

    I disagree with the statement that fish are skittish in Green water the cleaner the water the more difficult it is to get close to the fish at least that is from my personal observation

  • @jordanguinness4537

    Dan what do you do with the fish
    Seal him or eat him?

  • @freedivingdan
    @freedivingdan  11 років тому

    Obviously a bad shot can damage the meat, but fortunately it is not the same extent as you would see with a bullet going through a land animal. Head shots are always best.
