HAL was the only one who knew the real mission and was told to protect the mission even at the expense of the crew.
    It has always been this.

There are only a few questions worth asking....art and cinema particularly are how we try to work it all out. I appreciate your insights. Subbed.

Based on the inversion principle of the monolith as a stargate, we could iinterpret the beginning of the film as the view from starchild Dave's perspective. He has a looped back to the dawn of man.

I appreciate this attempt. However, in the movie (I forget much about Clarke's novelization, which did indeed as you say travel to Saturn rather than Jupiter), there is NO indication that the AE-35 EVER actually fails. HAL insists that it might fail, HAL's twin on Earth disputes HAL, and Poole is killed trying to put the still-functional AE-35 back so that they may, according to HAL's unproven recommendation, "let the unit fail." I am also struck and unnerved by HAL declaring the fake problem immediately after a little talk with Dave -- HAL is thinking fast, and ruthlessly. I remain unclear as to why anyone needed to be killed. According to the video which appears to Dave immediately after Dave kills HAL, Dave and Frank were to have been eventually clued in on the Big Secret once they reached Saturn (or Jupiter). HAL presumably knew this and would have had no reason to think of Dave and Frank as permanently ignorant, only temporarily so. I have always imagined HAL thinking "Dave and Frank are ignorant and are therefore liabilities which must be eliminated." Where this breaks down for me is when HAL murders the three "hibernauts." HAL has somehow decided that ALL humans, even the ones who have been properly briefed, are liabilities and that HAL is the sole sentience who can best make contact. I've been buying the "HAL was driven paranoid by bad human protocols" idea for years, but now I'm thinking of HAL as simply being egomaniacal. I'm not sure that either of us have the ultimate take on this movie, but I like the idea of the Star-Child representing an ultimate link between humanity, the aliens, and the universe, an idea which was sadly set completely aside in the movie sequel 2010. Thank you.

Thanks for watching the video. You are 100% correct: the AE-35 never fails in either the film or book. But we do do things without being conscious of why we do those things--this is the thesis of my take on the film and book. That HAL wanted the unit to fail (subconsciously) in order to complete the mission without the distraction--or moral contradiction--of having to lie to Dave and Frank about the mission as the other 3 astronauts were spared from doing by being in hibernation and unconscious and effectively cut off from Dave and Frank.

I think you're reading a little bit too much into this movie.
Your first argument is the literal definition of survival of the fittest. I don't know what kind of point you're trying to make.
Your second argument is beyond believable, the HAL 9000 does not have any qualms regarding his programming... He still tries to kill both the astronauts without remorse.
