  • People argue a lot over what "defines" a drug problem.
Because they do manifest in so many ways, and there is a lot of stigma involved, fear too, confusion and frustration.
Essentially it comes down to this; if you are choosing to use drugs, and you feel competent to make that choice, fully aware of risks and consequences, that must feel autonomous and empowering.
But when that "choice" doesn't feel like a choice; when it feels like an overwhelming highly emotional compulsion, one that robs you of agency; when we keep on using drugs despite having planned not too, regretting that choice in a consistent repetitive cycle - it can be very frightening.
A good drugs worker or therapist will always provide appropriate harm reduction information/equipment, but the best too they can help a person develop, is the ability to take ownership of that "choice" moment. Give "Choice", agency and control back to the person who feels like they are losing that.
