I'm glad Skylum and Excire are collaborating. Now the next step is to have Skylum buy out Excire and properly incorporate the two products! (Before Adobe decides to do it...and absorb the Excire AI, forcing you to stay with their subscription... 😫). But as much as these two products compliment each other, it's still a very clumsy collaboration: Save as JPEG, manually synchronize. Note that if you don't export to JPEG and instead leave the raw file edited in Neo, your edits will not show in the Excire preview!
Thanks Carl and yep I get that. It's not perfect but they are quite complementary. My hope is that Skylum adds a full catalog at some point and can either acquire or license Excire to add into it. That would be sweet. I appreciate you watching, as always.
Thanks Jim. Thankfully ON1 2023 includes this keyword feature at no extra cost other than the upgrade price.
Thanks John and yes if you are using On1 then this capability is coming in v2023. Thanks.
I have bought them both, the same day, some time ago. Great combination, except the synchronization. For search, nothing better.
Hi Jim, I've been using Excire Photo for quite a while in combination with various programs and I'm really looking forward to the comparison with Keyword AI in ON1 Photo RAW 2023.
Hi Jim, again another great vid. picked it up this morning used it on my laptop (yet to hit the big external hard drive).
I'm looking at a new monitor, any recommendations?
Hi Jase and thanks. I have a large Dell 4k monitor which I like, but I know a lot of folks like BenQ as well (and probably several other brands). I'm no expert in that stuff but I do find the Dell prices and quality are all good in my experience. Thanks.
@@JimNix thanks Jim, the Dell is in the mix along with the Eizo CS2470 that seems to get good ratings...
Oh, the Excire software doesn't like my Neo or Canon software for some reason. It's pretty good apart from that.
@@kiwi2xs yeah lots of options for monitors for sure, and don't hesitate to contact Excire support if you need to
An interesting video Jim. However, doesn't ON1 PhotoRaw 2023 Keywords AI do the same thing and doesn't cost you any extra? Just have to upgrade from 2022.5 along with all the other AI things added. I've watched a video on this part of ON1 and it seems very similar and is very powerful.
Hi Ken and yes the new On1 version will have a similar feature to Excire, although I have not had time to compare them yet. But the idea is very similar for sure. Thanks.
Another thing to consider is that the On1 version of the organizer module has a geotagging feature, whereas Excire doesn’t. A good comparison of the two products would be very helpful.
Hi Jim; Really great video. I've been using Excire Search in LrC since it's release and love it. It seems like you're trending towards Excire Foto as your DAM, not a bad idea and one I never even thought about. For me, I still would like iPhone and iPad access, which is why I'm still in both LrC/Ps and Mylio. Unfortunately, Adobe is still the DAM king of the hill and 15-20 years experience kind of explains why. It has the best DAM of anyone, bar none. The editor is kind of old and weak, which is why I've been jumping through a Ps Smart Object to Neo. Then Apply and back. Every other option I've tried including the one you just demo'd means the original RAW edits are now stored in the Neo catalog rather than the DAM catalog. I guess it sounds like I just want too much. 🙂
Hi Marc and as we have discussed in other comments, there is no perfect solution. I like Excire quite a bit and plan to keep using it. But I have not decided on my DAM yet. It's harder than you would think! :-)
Thanks Jim, I’ve been looking at Excire since I saw another video you did. But as far as I can see Excire doesn’t handle Apple Photo library, which is a BIG minus for me. Do you know if they plan to include Apple Photos. As for the bundle I already have Neo so this offer was nothing for me. Thanks for this great video
Hi Eva, you wrote Excire doesn’t handle the Apple photo library, & someone else also wrote about iPh/iPad access.
Are you saying the ProRAW &/or HEIF aren’t supported? As the Excire site says they support both .dng & .heif.
Hi Eva and thanks for watching and yes I have asked them about Photos and waiting to see what they think about that. I don't use Photos much so it's mostly a non-issue for me, although I do keep my iPhone shots in it so technically it would be helpful to have that all keyworded etc too. Thanks.
@@shannonpage6741 Sorry for being unclear. English is not my native language. I meant that you can’t handle the Apple Photos album/Camera Roll in Excire
@@JimNix Thanks Jim. I shoot almost exclusively with my iPhone and then edit on my iPad. A lot of good apps out there when you don’t want to edit on the computer, which I also do of course.
@@ubbyliv No apologies needed. I was confused because I thought it was file types, but Jim clarified it for me. Evidently, it’s Apple’s hidden photos file structure that’s the issue. I think(!).
Jim what if you already have neo and just want the photo manager? Is there a discount code for that ?
Hi Ace, hope you are well and yes use LUMINAR25 on the Excire website as a coupon code and save 25%.
Hi Jim, thank you for the great video. I’ve already own Luminar Neo. Can I buy Excire alone?
Thanks Johny and yes. Go to their website at excire.com and use code LUMINAR25 at checkout to save 25%. Enjoy!
As I already own Luminar NEO I just bought Excire. But there is no "Open with NEO". There is a option to chose an application. But after I have done that it only opens NEO but it does not show me the chosen photo. I think I need to contact Excire support.
@@JimNix Indeed, they have the solution on their website. Working great now.
Thanks for the video. But what if luminar Neo or other photo applications do not show as an extension in Excire Foto? How do you add it?
You open Luminar with a right-click on "Open with..." and then choose Luminar. If Luminar does not show up in the list, please select the file once in Windows Explorer, and do the same here. After you once selected Luminar with "Open with..." in the Explorer, it will also show up in Excire Foto.
Hey Him. Great video. Seems Skylum definitely has no intention to develop their own DAM by offering the bundle. Glad they have communicated this although in a convoluted way.
Question: How would you compare Photo Mechanic to this Excire Foto?
Photo Mechanic has been around far longer and used by professional journalists for years.
Hi there and not sure if Skylum will make a full DAM or not. There has been no word on that. In the meantime, this bundle works well since the two products are quite complementary. But I have never tried Photo Mechanic so I cannot compare them. I have heard good things about it from a lot of people.
jim, when i use Excire and i use "open with" on a photo, neo does not come up as option. i click "choose application" and navigate to neo, it says "unable to open file" error. any ideas on this? thanks
Hello Jim, why should I take Exire Foto. I have thousands photos in Lightroom.
Hi Rene, there is a LR version of Excire that works well and can give you all of this functionality inside of LR. It's called Excire Search and you can find that on the Excire website. thanks
Can you make Luminar the default editor in Excire so you can double click an image and have it go directly to LN?
You open Luminar with a right-click on "Open with..." and then choose Luminar.
If Luminar does not show up in the list, please select the file once in Windows Explorer, and do the same here. After you once selected Luminar with "Open with..." in the Explorer, it will also show up in Excire Foto.
@@Excire Yes, I saw that from Jim's video. I was talking about setting it up to double click an image and having it go straight to the edit tab in Neo. Adobe Bridge can do this.
@@TLeightonWomack Currently that is not possible. But I will pass on the idea to our development team.
how do you get excire foto to send to luminar neo skylum sent me email that they do not support excire foto
Just to let you know Luminar Neo crashes every time I try to open an image from Excire Foto (latest version of each) on my M1 Mac mini
@@JimNix there seems to be no solution Skylum and Excire both deny any responsibility and have no suggestions. From Skylum support: there is no documented implementation of the Excire plugin into Luminar Neo and vice versa.
@@JimNix Thanks Jim, There isn't really anything you can do but I thought you should know since you've been recommending this product combo. I've been following your channel for a while now and appreciate your advice and pointers. Thanks again.
@@MartyYaslowitz thanks for watching and sorry you are dealing with this - I still have an Intel Mac and it has worked fine, and am sorry to hear it hasn't been that way for you
Skylum have no plans to make their own DAM then, Photo Mechanic is way superior guys so stick to that if you're a mac user, it's odd that they have bundled this together with LN.
I have never tried Photo Mechanic although I have had a few people mention it to me.
DISCOUNT ALERT: Hey friends, if you already have Luminar and want to get Excire Foto 2022, you can use code LUMINAR25 to save 25% on Excire Foto 2022 on the Excire website.
I’d certainly be interested in taking up this offer, but others have raised concerns over its compatibility with Apple photo files. Are you aware of this?
@@shannonpage6741 hi there and yes I think the challenge is that Excire has to be able to see the files, and Apple does not allow us to see them unless you are inside Photos itself. The file structure isn't visible. I will check with the Excire team though and see if they can provide more insight. Thanks.
@@JimNix Ah, yes that sounds correct! Unfortunately for us Apple users! I’ve also emailed them asking for clarification.
Thanks for your reply & huge thanks for your fabulous videos!
@@shannonpage6741 thanks for watching. I also pinged the Excire folks to get their input. Will share here once I hear something.
@@JimNix I wrote this also under another comment a bit further above. And it is, as you said before:
Excire Foto DOES support iPhone photo formats, such as HEIC.
It DOES NOT open the Apple Photos Library on Mac. That is a closed database that external software, such as Excire Foto, cannot access.
So, if you just take photos with your iPhone, and then store them in a normal folder on your harddisk, Excire Foto will be able to read those into its database like other image files.
These are the currently supported file formats:
.3fr, .arw, .cr2, .cr3, .crw, .dcr, .dng, .erf, .gpr, .heic, .heif, .iiq, .kdc, .mef, .mos, .mrw, .nef, .nrw, .orf, .pef, .ppm, .raf, .raw, .rw2, .rwl, .sr2, .srf, .srw, .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .jfif, .png, .pgm, .tif, .tiff, psd
