    I realize that the few minutes of video you share with us each weekend represents hours and hours of work on the boat, filming and editing, but selfishly I always wish there were more minutes each week for me to watch. Always very interesting and pardon my selfishness. This is always a highlight of the weekend. Could I use the word "always" a few mote times????

BUT, it's very interesting to watch you guys overcome initial failure and this does demonstrate something that is different from the rest of the panel bonding, fairing and painting. I know you can’t put everything in the video, but it was obvious that you both have been really busy getting to this point in the build and the dagger-board cases look very nice and as good as they could ever be being built by anyone. I’m guessing that the cases will also be water tight when they are completely covered with fiberglass. Isn’t the inside of these cases open to the sea or does it get some kind of water cover to minimize water coming up into the cases while underway?

    No stop. Don't trim the sides, offset them, bond then and move forward. If you calculated correctly you will lose the thickness of the two sides combined, looks quite minimal on video. If you're really good you make each side the dimension of the interior and your size is preset. Couple screws along them with acrylic between and Bob's your uncle.

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  2 роки тому

      The interior dimensions are the important part for the machined bearing that rests inside. That's why I used the board that represents the half width as the guide on the inside. It need to end up at 118mm

    A "blessing of the fleet" every year around Easter is common in Christian fishing communities, fwiw. Often famously accompanied by a priest tossing a cross into the waters and all the boys jumping in competing for the honor of bringing it up first.

  • @berinslaptop

    Peelply does NOT mean you dont need to sand. peelply is to hold in resin, hold out air and leave a smoother finish. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS sand your surface. even if its a hand scuff. ALLWAYS scuff your surface. claiming no sanding is needed when using peelply is equal to an "old wifes tail" and false. If you dont want to believe me. TRY doing a Peel test. setup two layers of 1208 2" wide 8" long on a well scuffed surface. then two to a peelplyed surface. leave the end over tape or peelply by 2" so you can get flat blade clamps onto it after they are cured. Do a pull test. the peelply surface will pull away WITH FAR less force. I work on multi milliondollar yachts for a living, as well as being a masterglass man.
    FACT... peelply leaves a resin surface, scuffing exposes the fibers of the material surface. During the curing process, fibers from the surface and fibers from the applyed layer(s) become entangled in the linking process . A peelply surface leaves a machanical/chemical bond to a pure chemical surface (RESIN). And resin is britle. On top of that, certain types of peelply will leave an atom thick layer of material which will act like a release agent given enough load.

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  2 роки тому

      While I wouldn't glass over only a peelplyed keyed surface (the surface isn't smooth) without an additional sanding, when bonding two pieces of already cured fiberglassed surfaces - the foam cored to the side- I don't see much difference in the tests we've done. We sanded the foam cored side that had been exposed for a long time, the other side just got an additional styrene wipe. But in the same breath, we did sand the larger horizontal before bonding those pieces.... So I guess we're inconsistent.

    • @berinslaptop
      @berinslaptop 2 роки тому +1

      @@MJSailing The long and the short of it is this. A peelply surface leaves a non smooth surface TRUE. Yet, that surface is pure resin with the fiberglass sheeting its self encapsulated by resin. Even though the peelply leaves a textured surface. It is 100% resin based with the fibers encapsilated, resin bond. and your bond of any fiberglass to fiberglass is only as good the volume of surface area to bond to and what it is made of. RESIN is brittle. Pro-TIP, the best 4" grinding wheel for fiberglass are diamond turbo cup wheels (ment for cement). Nothing lasts as long as they do and the finished grinding surface is 10X more rough then your standard rhino grit disks. They also are equal to about 500 disks in regards to rate of wear. The rate of grinding is 2/3's faster as well but they are a hard wheel so they want surfaces that are more then less flat. H-F tools sku number 61419 hint hint.

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  2 роки тому

      Thanks Berin. I've tried a diamond cup wheel, but I don't think I have the finesse to use it one these things. I tend to dig in much more than a grinding disc.

      Use the settings, switch to a faster playback speed and suck it up buttercup, no one cares about your personal issues or if you do or don't watch. It's amazing a person who doesn't like the style so much they decide not to watch but somehow finds themselves making a comment on a video they supposedly couldn't watch. Just strange, at least to me.
      I tend to watch a lot of videos on 1.5 speed as I watch some people that speak that fast anyway. But you'll find it makes it more boring to watch anything at regular speed. Just a thought.
