Former Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper joins the Standpoint to discuss Justin Trudeau's resignation, the state of Canada’s government, and President Trump’s shocking comments about Canada. Donald Trump recently made remarks surrounding Canada and America’s relationship with lumber, oil, dairy, and more - remarking that Canada should become the 51st state. Ex-Prime Minister Stephen Harper dives into what Trump gets wrong about his comments and emphasizes that Canada wants to be America’s friend and neighbor - not annexed by our allies.

I do believe that because of the ties from Pierre to PM Harper, Canada is most trusting in the Conservative Party. I pray that we have that opportunity to get Pierre in. Excellent interview with Prime Minister Steven Harper. He is clear and summarized his role as Prime Minister well (great contribution by his government at that time to Canada), and gave his concluding views, rather smoothly and precisely, on what Canada should do with the present situation with President Trump pushing for Canada as the 51st State.
In particular, during his tenure, he was always working towards balancing the budget in good times, an act that should be appreciated and followed by Governments across the globe, including US and Canada today.

Yes, 2006 was the year that Stephen Harper was elected to the office of Prime Minister in Canada!! And, honestly, the only thing I remember about his term as PM, is that, just before that election, I went to a family reunion, where my sister mentioned that she was very worried, "Because, if Harper wins the election," she said, "he will send our military to war!" It ended up that she was quite correct about this!! She had a son, yes "had" is the operative word there!! That same year on September 18th, my nephew was killed by a suicide bomber in Kandahar, Afghanistan, leaving his wife and their young children to live on without him!! Niw, this is the only thing I worry about, by electing a Conservative Government!! I just don't want any more young Canadians to similarly be dying for nothing, by fighting useless wars that just really are NOT for their country, but only for our government who only follows the American war mongers!! And, in my mind & heart, my nephew, a Medic in the Canadian Military, peacefully handing out candy to children, died for absolutely nothing, because NOTHING changed in Afghanistan even after many young people died just like my nephew did over there!!!

Great job having the Former PM of Canada. The Right Honourable Harper is an extremely shy person and rarely makes an appearance, let alone interviews.
I gathered that the reason Mr Harper left when he lost over Justin Trudeau was bc the latter doesn’t have the mental capacity to argue with him in the Hill. This is just my opinion. I’m sure if you asked him that question, he’d be very diplomatic and won’t answer it.
FYI, people assume that the Honourable Poilievre is Trump-like. If you dissect their backgrounds, Justin is actually a lot closer to Trump. Both men inherited the wealth of their fathers. Their last name is a brand. They were both involved in cronyism and many sexual controversies.
Mr Poilievre had to resort to the name-calling game bc whoever put Justin to power (Liberal party and voters) are so star-struck they can’t see past their noses. The social media was in love with him. Heck, his first magazine cover was a fashion magazine when he became the PM.
I’m elated that the honeymoon stage is finally over. FYI, do an online search of Justin’s name and Maclean magazine. Better yet, search his mother’s name Margaret along with her private part (please be explicit when you do your search). That’s why the rumours that he was the son of Fidel Castro. I hope you get a laugh after, enjoy! :)

Pierre Poilievre ………NOT “paul-ih-vair”……….”poly-ev”. Pretty simple.

I always respected PM Harper for standing up to Putin when he saw him at an international meeting, refused to shake his hand and told him, to his face, to 'get out of Crimea'. He has a backbone. You have to respect that, like him or not.

Best PM we ever had since Laurier. Stupid Canadians voted him out in 2015 in favour of weed and "budgets balance themselves". He did not deserve to suffer such a landslide defeat.

He lost in 2015 because he could not explain a vision just like Trudeau is continue. When you are in second or third mandate, you need to treat the election campaign as it is your first seeking a first mandate. Both Trudeau and Harper took Canadians for granted toward the end.

@@mebmakes you’ll see what a real landslide is this election.
The reason liberals won a lot seats then is because they were very unpopular under there former leader…the liberals have always been a popular party otherwise which is why when they put a pretty face in charge saying he’d legalize weed… they won lots of seats.
Conservatives didn’t lose massive amounts of voters and weren’t destroyed as a party though.

Steven Harper is my favourite Prime Minister, he was criticized so much, couldn’t form a majority government- but he saved Canadian economy, he supported young families, reduced the gst rate. There was stability - But Pierre Polviere is not as effective as Harper.

As a stupid young leftist, I really disliked Mr Harper. Booyyy was i ungrateful. I'd give much to have him back as PM. Thankfully Mr. Poilievre is on hiis way up and it's arguably even better, or at the very leawst a second best.
