A power frieren hasn't used in 80 years is the power she hasn't use since the Demon King, and now Fern! It was the clone but...
even though ubel's thinking can sound ridiculous to normal people, in essence, she's absolutely right in saying they all think too much. at the end of the day, the "Immovable Cloak" is still fabric and a first-class mage's magic hair is still hair, both of which are materials meant to be cut. I actually really really like her character and magic, i hope we get to see her more even after this arc 😭
Cleave and dismantle
Yet all but a few will stop Ubel's attack with a basic defense spell as she can't cut it. It just those who have put that defense in an item in this case cloak and hair that she can cut.
Thus she notes Denken and Wirbel can beat her easy. And Fern of course but you do have above the Wirbel bind she picked up which Freiren is immune to bind and near immune to hypnotise and probably everything a top Raid Boss is immune to because Frieren is a End Content Raid boss.
I think a point of clarification is that Ubel’s cutting spell isn’t based in logic. Instead, it’s based in visualization and intuition. Her genius is in her ability to intuit and visualize ways to bypass defenses without necessarily consciously figuring out a solution she can verbalize.
The series has mentioned how critical visualization is to magic on multiple occasions and she does it better than most if not all other characters.

Basic defense spell she can't cut because she can't visualize how to cut it.
The intuitive part is both its strength and its weakness. Ubel doesn't have conscious control over what she can or cannot cut easily. She cannot just talk herself into believing that she can cut through things like regular defence magic, or a 20ft thick wall of pure steel. It's specific to things she intuitively imagines to be cuttable, like cloth and hair. And presumably for things that are intuitively cuttable but only with difficulty, she cannot cut them easily, and would need to use substantial effort to cut. Like for example, wood. When she was fighting Wirbel, she slashed at the trees around them, but only occasionally cut through an entire limb, and most of the time just sort of superficially slashed into the bark.
This episode had better animation than demon slayer but no one’s ready for that conversation
Facts and lowkey way more consistent even when they’re not fighting
100% honestly frieren should sweep at the crunchyroll awards next year but I doubt that happens sadly
I hope Frieren will absolutely sweep the competition, it has everything. I can hardly see anything this year that can come close to surpassing Frieren, I don't think I ever saw something this consistently good.

A little clarification for Ubel's magic. Consider this, when you see cloth for the first time you see it as just simple fabric. Whether that cloth is thick or thin, it is still cloth and you assume it can be cut, that's just natural right?
Now, imagine that that cloth is reinforced with carbon fibers or even thin metal rings. What would happen then? You identify the reinforcement and you know intellectually that this isn't a simple cloth anymore. It isn't something that can be cut with a pair of scissors and you will search for another way to bypass the new armor. That is the logical thing to do, that is what been able to identify a difference in a previous concept leads to. No matter the imagination you might have, there is no way a person would gaslight themselves in believing that a pair of scissors would be able to cut reinforced steel. That is what bewildered Sense.
Ubel is doing exactly that. She knew that the cloak in front of her was tank armor, she knew that anything she threw at it would do nothing to it, yet, she actually believed that what she saw in front of her was not reality and that it was a simple piece of fabric! I mean who does that? Even idiots that do the same attack again and again against a fortified position believe that the attack will eventually work because the previous attacks did some damage, not because they actually believe that the new attack will actually work on its own. Ubel literary has programmed in her soul a belief that if something is cloth or hair as a general concept, then that something can be cut period! It's not something that can be taught, its not just that I will convince myself that I can do something. She actually perceives this as reality no matter that it objectively is not. And she actually knows it is not in an intellectual level. That is why Sense is horrified and calls her crazy and her ability superpower. Because it is actually something that IS crazy and Ubel IS crazy.
And that is where the limitation of her power comes from. She can cut anything she has identified as something that can be cut since she was a child. Meaning cloth, hair, flesh etc. She can't cut cleanly stone, steel or wood or anything else like that. Her attacks might do some damage, but those attacks would do as much damage as the force behind the attack. But defensive spells such as the one used in the series is another thing entirely. The defensive spell used is a mana construct that its entire purpose is to block completely mana based attacks such as her signature spell. She learned this to be the truth when she first learned the spell and grew with that concept as an absolute truth and reality. She never had any other influence about this, so she can't convince herself that her attacks can actually bypass this defense which is why Wirbel managed to defeat her. Her attacks were blocked and he is overall a better fighter with far more experience and talent.
As for Fern, while she is an impressive mage and will certainly grow even stronger with time and experience, she in not ready to face Frieren alone anytime soon. The episode cemented the fact that Fern could not face Frieren, she acted as an assassin the entire battle, waiting for the perfect opening in order to exploit it. The clone was focused on Frieren for the entire battle, and we were told in the episode by Frieren herself that some of the openings she created for Fern to exploit, Fern was not able to recognize and use, meaning that Fern is still lacking both in experience, skill and seer strength. While she does have the potential to grow enough for her to defeat Frieren in the end, that is still many years down the road. In her current state, I would place her under Denken, Wirbel and Methode since I believe all three of them could win against her in a one on one battle. Denken because of his experience and knowledge. Wirbel because of his battle experience, versatility and his signature spell Sorganeil. Fern is a long range mage and does not know a lot about his magic, so it would be easy for him to place her in a position that he can see her whole body and trap her. And finally Methode is extremely versatile and has restrain magic that we were shown to be extremely effective against Fern, and it is implied in the episode that she defeated Fern's clone in a one on one battle already.
Small nitpick, but Übel does cut wood effortlessly tho.
When fighting Wirbel she clearly cleaved through many trees as collateral damage.
If I had to take a guess, she thinks Wood is cuttable because of axes (god I hope she doesn't learn that stone and steel can be cut with high pressure water)
80 years ago was the battle with the Demon King, that waa likely the last person to force her into that magic

2. Frieren showing the golem breakdancing in Early chapters
3. The golem is MIMICKING FRIEREN AND ATTACK AT THE SAME TIME
4. Frieren being distracted we ith the staff after being attack
5. Frieren gap was ignored by fern cause thats how level it is
6. Methode no diff fern shows how insane she actually is
7. Ubel is ultra insane as she one shots a grade 1
People think Ubel's spell is too OP, but she can't penetrate ordinary defense magic directly(that blue shield) because she couldn't visualize cutting it, that's why she said she couldn't beat Wirbel and Denken. Yes, she's is stront but her limitations are more than you all think, she can only cut everyday objects even though they are covered in strong defense spells
Fern survived the fight with Frieren's clone because he underestimated her.
There's also Frieren keeping that clone busy.
I feel like the real accomplishment that fern got in the fight was the recognition of the clone. The clone had been preoccupied with frieren the whole fight deeming her to be the bigger threat than fern. It was after being wounded that the clone changed who was the bigger threat. The clone didn’t even make that face against frieren, her literal match in power.

Well they did anounce that killing the Mage would disqualify you from passing. So That Mage was aware there were attacks that could kill him out there. As Methode stated magic a rock, paper, scissors with infinite more options system. So someone likely has the Scissors for your Paper out there which was Ubel. The problem was they did not thing anyone with the ability to harm the Proctor would actually kill the Proctor and get disqualified.
As far as forcing the Proctor back. Fist would probably work along with any indirect take the ground under him away attack and even a wind attack if your actually making wind blow or water in example of our water mage would move him as well.
@@RedRocket4000 They announced that killing anyone would be disqualifying, and they were mostly thinking of protecting the other examinees who were all there lining up for their turn. Basically they wanted to make sure no one goes too crazy with some kind of AoE attack or disregards the possibility of splash damage from their attacks rebounding off the impenetrable cloak. No one was expecting Burg to be in any sort of danger whatsoever at all. They all just assumed he was untouchable short of someone like Serie showing up to blast him.
Ubel isn’t a master at visualizing how her cutting spell would cut something. Instead she’s able to simultaneously be logical and also be able to throw away logic and cut things that are impossible to cut. That’s why she’s seen as inhuman because she’s able to recognize that cutting something is impossible while also cutting it anyways
It's not so much that Übel is powerful, it's that her use of her skill is broken, and that she's very well suited to killing people. If you put her in a match against Fern, Frieren, Denken, Methode, or Ehre, they'd eat her lunch and still have time for dessert. Defensive-focused mages like Richter or Scharf would probably give her trouble as well. She'd probably be able to take any of the rest of the group one-on-one, except for Megane-kun, of course, since he'd never let her see the real him.
Yes rock walls Richter uses are way thicker than the amount of rock she sliced in that attack in his case it his Rock vs her Scissors
And Frieren immune to bind so Ubel loses that advantage vs her. Can assume Frieren like an end content Raid boss which she was in clone form near immune to any status modification or control spell.

are u talking about the overhead shot during the montage of the mages fighting the clones today? i noticed that gollum running too but couldn't tell who it was carrying. assuming blei (the bald guy who stayed behind so that Dunste could escape) used his gollum immediately upon falling, the test taker you're asking about is most likely ton. ton was partnered with Lange and Methode in stage 1. he was dressed in green and was the first to enter the labyrinth, commenting that he was working alone. they show him again in ep 25 cowering alone behind a large rock. it's possible i'm completely neglecting someone here, but unless there was a continuity error, i'd be it's him.

No. Fern wouldn't be able to kill Frieren at her current level. The clone would have killed her after pinning her to the wall if not for the original stepping in to destroy the clone.
Yeah, Fern is without any doubt an extreme prodigy, and truly an amazing mage, but at the moment pictured, she was only barely able tip the scales of Frieren vs Frieren into the favor of the Frieren she was on the side of. 1v1 she wouldn't stand a chance. Yet

The demon king thing happened approximately 80 years ago.
Therefore this is not only the first clue they give us about the battle, but it is also telling us that Fern is almost as powerful as the demon king.

It gets fixed. Frieren has magic to fix shit like that. This isn’t the most beat up she gets in the series. You should see her when she gets into a literal slugging match against a greater demon. I love how both of them got annoyed at work it was going to take to wear each other down that they both kinda gave up on being clever and settled for just throwing raw mana at each other until one of them died
Goddamn masterpiece of an episode that dialed up the manga to 12, this makes me so excited to see how the bring the next 2 major arcs to life.
What a lot of people don't get about Ubel is that the way she learns magic is different to others this is also part of why she's able to learn other people's magic much easier than traditional methods of understanding the logic and mechanics of the spell, which can take years, frieren also does this, but she can do both.
This gives Ubel so much potential, I think Fern can do something similar because in the Manga even though she studies, she doesn't like it necessarily, this is rare though I think they're the only 2 human mages with possibly Methode as well and this is a first class mage exam,so it shows how there are outliers even within that considering no one has passed the last 4 exams proctored by sense

Magic is visualization, and Fern (and only Fern, of all the young mages) just saw "the peak of magic"... so, yeah, maybe someday that'll pay off with an equivalent or superior outpouring from Fern.

Not too hard she probably worked at cutting up animals as well. But maybe not slice attack can cut into stone but not that far and that much flesh and bone compared about the same. So her cut anything attack at the base did the body cut it the fact she could ignore defense based on anything a scissors can cut is what allowed it. She stated basic defense magic blocks her attack and it has a lot in Wirbel fight. So most mages could stop this attack and if she had not picked up that bind spell she be in big trouble. Ubel states Denken and Wirbel can beat her.

What an Episode!!!!
My interpretation of Laufen's comment about how fighting the Methode clone was "surprisingly easy" is that Laufen has a specific matchup advantage against Methode which she herself wasn't fully aware of (since she's been described by Denken as inexperienced). It may have been Methode herself or Denken or one of the other experienced mages who pointed out the matchup advantage during their planning session. By normal metrics, Methode is much stronger than Laufen, in terms of mana, experience, breadth of magical knowledge, etc, and Laufen may have assumed that she would have been no match for Methode. As to what that specific matchup advantage might be, based on the animation of their fight scenes I'd guess it was either Laufen's physical agility and movement speed, and/or her skill in close quarters combat, which Methode might be specifically weak against.
