This has to be the most JJ sounding solo I've heard
His rhythm feel is masterful - he's in the pocket and picks
the right moments to lean back *just* a little
This was the first transcription I ever did 😭 brings me back 🥲
Blues in the key of GOAT can't sink this BOAT.
I literally cried listening and watching the transcription … gosh JJ , truly a master
J. J. Johnson
This a gem. Being able to see and listen to J. J. while following his transcribed solo here is a joy. Thanks for doing it, Rob!
Beginning with the eighth-note pickups to measure 42 and continuing through measure 46, listen to the way J. J. weaves into his solo a fragment of ”Without a Song.” It’s way hip.
J. J.’s quotes were never contrived. They were always an integral part of his improvised lines, always in context - as was everything he played.
J. J. is still The Master.
Clear, concise, never overstated or overplayed and swingin' his a$$ off! The absolute master of cool bop! 😎
definitely in my new favorite key of GOAT
Dnt ya just love listening to a master player
Yes!

G.O.A.T indeed. So good!
Another great one, thank you!
Rob I have a question for you. I don't know how actively you engage in the UA-cam platform, but it appears to me that over the past year transcription videos have been picked up by UA-cam's recommendation algorithm and started to trend in popularity by a considerable amount. This makes me very happy to see because it feels like younger generations are displaying more of an interest in jazz, or at least more so thanks to content creators like you and a little bit of magic from UA-cam algorithm. I see more and more channels creating these videos (maybe it's just the makeup of my algorithm, who knows!). Nonetheless, I consider you to be an OG of this genre of UA-cam content. So how does seeing all of this happen make you feel?
Thanks, Jimmy! I agree, there appears to have been a growth, with George Collier leading the way. I changed to the same format on his advice and am hoping the algorithm picks me up too!
Like you, it makes me feel happy that this sort of thing is being seen by a wider audience - especially if it is the next generation.
