    Shout out to my Dad for filming on the bike! For context we pulled this old 20+ year old bike and had to fix the tire that morning (it was bent and the tube was totally flat)...(and my dad had not been on a bike for about 15+ years). The bike did not have good traction on the mud (there was some mud on the uphills as this run had over 1000' of climbing) and it was full of rust and had creeky gears and brakes. Dad is also not used to filming with a GoPro (which he had to hold in one hand while his hands were freezing!). He also carried a backpack with our phones in it, my gels (Spring Energy) and water bottles. Dad of the year!

    What you said in 7:36 about striving through obstacles for not just PR but also for other kinds of self-improvement, really touched my heart. Thank you Sage. I mean, the whole world teaches us the definition of success, the importance of results, but what really matters sometimes , is to learn how to enjoy whatever life throws at us. Neither rains nor colds could stop me running and keep going forward chasing my dreams. This is what long distance running teaches us how to ultimately have a true meaning of life!

    I remember back in the '80s when I decided to train for the marathon, I incorporated competition too. I found that racing over the shorter distances my times came down dramatically. This was in my belief due to the confidence of knowing I could easily complete these shorter distances at a much faster pace. I did PB´S at 5 miles, 10 miles and the Half during the marathon training of 17 weeks. Each week of training included a 3 hour 30 minute run over a very hilly route. Miss those days dearly. All the very best for the future, hope you can get down to 2.10 one day. Well done to your dad. Ronald

    Since discovering the truth about diet and nutrition. I have consistently improved over the past 6 years transitioning to totally whole food, cutting out all refined foods including oils and sugars. I lived on eggs and chicken, would loose muscle mass running too much. Now in plant power mode I’m getting stronger fitter, muscle growth, and most importantly removed all the “Normal” aches, pains and other weird feelings that normal people get with animal products in their diet. I feel and look a completely different person, exceptional blood results. I just wish I discovered 20 years or so ago when I was old enough to feed myself. As the quote goes “If it disagrees with experiment, it’s wrong”. I experimented on myself and discovered what has been holding me back all these years is simply diet and nutrition.

    • @its_Matt_B_
      @its_Matt_B_ 4 роки тому +8

      Victor Souza Great question! Most miles of a long run will be quite a bit slower than race pace, however, you can log a few miles towards the end at race pace. This will help you get used to running fast on tired legs!
      The reason you shouldn't do your long runs at race pace is because the recovery time would be too great. 👊🏼

      Most of our Sage Running Training Plans have Long Run workouts where a certain percentage of the Long Run is done around or even slightly faster than goal marathon pace (usually that % is less than 1/3-1/4 though). For example, a 20-miler where miles 14-18 are done at Marathon Pace, and the other miles are within 40-60 sec/mile of Marathon Pace. Generally if you are a 3:00-4:00 marathoner it is easier to hit more miles at Marathon Race Pace than if you are a sub 3:00 Marathoner. It is much harder to hit marathon pace if you are sub 2:30 as all pace ranges are generally closer together and closer to true Lactate Threshold. But then again many people running sub 3:00 and sub 2:30 are generally running higher mileage weekly totals. The only detriment is injury and over-training risk. So it could hurt you or sap your speed for other quality sessions. I generally save my big efforts for races and will instead focus on a few key workouts like 3 x 5km or 2 x 8km at Faster than marathon goal pace (like only 10 sec/mile faster). Then on the Long Runs we do a lot of pace changes with things like 8 x 3-min at 10km/CV pace effort near the end or "5-8 miles Uptempo" that is closer to marathon effort. Other Long Runs I'm over 1-min per mile slower than Marathon Goal Pace. Those are still pretty hard for me if they are like 24-miles long though. Other specific workouts like 2-mile repeats and 1km repeats can work at faster than Marathon Pace and that gives more quality.

    I dont have any support and then I think of hiding my drinks and gels in a bush but some greedy bastard might come along, and I might forget which bush after 16 miles when my head is all fuzzy... may I borrow your dad ? :))

    hey Sage, veganism can be highly healthy, but it depends on the person. for some people it is performance enhancing, whereas other people feel like crap (of course I assume your nutrition includes everything what the body is craving for). anyway, everyone is unique; so why not give it a try to eat some fish, meat and eggs (from happy animals) and if it does not work out, you can go back. I was a vegan for a couple years and my diet included everything what my body should need, but I was not feeling so well ( I was eating 70 % only vegetables, fruits and natural food like tons of avocados and nuts - the remaining 30 % included lentils and other high protein things). now I include some fish and my performance has improved a lot - from 72 min to 68 min in the half marathon. there is no reason why this is the case, since my blood values have not changed, but blood values do not show the full picture, our body is much more complex (maybe you should check your atp production; the mitochondria production or check which groceries cause inflammation in your body). you are a 2:16 marathon runner, clearly you can perform much better than right now. sometimes we need a radical change/adjustment....

      tons of avocados and nuts was most likely your problem. you should have very limited nuts and avocadoes. those fats arent meant to be eaten except in very small doses. like a very small handful of nuts per day and maybe a fourth of an avocado a day.

      Could be possible right, but I am still doing this and my performance has improved by only integrating fish, eggs and meat. Maybe it will improve further if I reduce my avocado and nuts consumption...

    Health aside, I think at least part of the reason you are vegan is that you care about the welfare of animals. You are an ethical, good, generous, kind person, and I believe those qualities help make you a better runner.

    A vegetarian diet if done right works very well, but if not done right then it can go all wrong very quick.
