      After my purchase I asked if they recognized me and they didn't and so I explained.

      FatalismTV This isn't an experiment. Your independent variable should have been the same person. You tested two different guys. You only demonstrated the two different personalities of different car salesmen.

      FatalismTV The dialogue when someone enters is very important and the two guys had totally different approaches. "you guys got the McLaren?" C'mon... you just don't do that. Then, suddenly he's happy to settle for an SLK!! That info told the salesman that this clown wasn't serious at all.
      Why is it that in these so called "experiments", the parameters are always totally different. Wow, like we are meant to be so surprised to see the social class discrimination!!

      all car sales people are at the bottom of the ladder of sales. The car is sold by tv marketing etc, or a basic need just like getting a pint of milk. The people in the showroom only fill in bits of paper but act as though they are important. That is every car salesperson in every showroom in every town in every country all across the world.

    Well to be fair, you went to 2 different dealerships/ showrooms.
    Maybe the staff at the first one are just assholes (or just that one employee).
    You could've went there again dressed formally and vice versa to really do a proper experiment.

    • @Ndasuunye
      @Ndasuunye 9 років тому

      +Samara Weaving He would have to make sure the same salesperson isn't there that day so he won't be outsed on his prank. Or use two different people for the job.

    • @incogneterpeter
      @incogneterpeter 9 років тому +1

      +Ndasuunye no that wouldn't be a very good experiment just like this one isn't.
      In order for it to be a good experiment the guy would need to go to the same dealer ship, with the same sales person, and relatively the same time of day.
      He went to two different stores with two different sales men dressed completely different. That's way to many variables to tell if this experiment actually worked.
      They should have gone to one several people and dressed down and up to each to see over all. You can go to two completely different sales associates of different culture with two different looks and expect the same outcome...

    • @incogneterpeter
      @incogneterpeter 9 років тому

      +Ndasuunye When I worked in sales if you came to me regardless of how you dressed you would get a different service from every sales associate in the store. I treated (and still do) treat everyone the same. Whether they came in to spend 10k or 15$ it didn't matter if you were dressed like a hooker or dressed like the richest person in the world you would get the same service regardless of what you came and intended on spending. The only thing that altered how I treated you was how you treated me.
      But if you went to some of my coworkers and you were dressed in sweat pants and t shirt or jeans and a t shirt then you would be treated completely different than if you wanted in dressed in a full suit or expensive dress. And most times it was the ones dressed down that spent the most.

    This reminds me of a story my grandpa told me. He was a successful farmer and wanted to buy a new car. One day after he was done working, he went down to the dealership and asked to see a car. The salesman, seeing a dirt covered farmer, told him the car was sold. My grandpa asked another salesman a few days later and ended up buying the car in cash. A prime example of the saying "don't judge a book by its cover.

    It's the age, a young kid (dressed nice or poor) is not taken seriously compared to an older person, 30's-40's+. I work at a MB dealership this is the mentality we have because the younger kids are the ones who just wanna check out the new S550 or the G-Wagon while the older ones are just there to buy it.

    • @AyazakuraRinne
      @AyazakuraRinne 9 років тому +18

      Chthonian121 This is not necessarily true. Asian kids (dressed formal or fancy) with accents are always taken seriously since so many of those spoiled international students are into expensive cars. Since you work at a MB dealership, you'd better start taking young foreigners seriously. I know a Chinese guy who got lots of money from his parent. Around 2 years ago he went to a MB dealership to check out a SLS AMG but the salesperson didn't think he could afford that car and didn't bother talking to him. He got upset, called his manager and bought the SLS on the showroom with cash.
      Now most dealership I have been to (porsche, maserati, BMW, MB, etc) value those young customers a lot. They buy expensive cars frequently without thoughts thanks to their rich parents. An older person would probably take longer for the process since they actually make their own money. If you are not convinced, go visit a university campus with a large international student population and check out their cars. No offense to you.

    • @AyazakuraRinne
      @AyazakuraRinne 9 років тому +1

      Chthonian121 Thanks for your insights! Certainly I only know about the situation within my own community. I never thought of the middle eastern rich kids but only the Asian ones. I guess it's really a regional thing that happened mostly around college towns. My town isn't very rich and you rarely see local people with anything more expensive than the new E class or 5 series. Probably some old folks drive a 10 or 20 years old MB or BMW but that's pretty much it. The MB dealership that I bought my car at said they sold over 80% of their cars to Asian international students. A Maserati/Ferrari dealership I visited said like 21 of the 23 new cars they sold in a while are to Chinese or Korean young kids. They even hire salesperson who speak Chinese or Korean just for that purpose.
      Anyhow, I definitely see your points. And a young kid looking for a S550 or G SUV most likely won't buy it for sure. The most popular MB around me are C63, CLS63, and ML63. The S class sedan and G class are just too mature for young kids.

  • @Lolman240
    @Lolman240 9 років тому +3

    I think not only does the appearance matter but the car you're trading in affects the salesman's behavior as well. My personal experience: I went to a Chevy dealer dressed up in a tee and shorts asking to see the corvette Z06. I was ignored and told to wait for a guy because they were all "busy". When one finally showed up to talk to me, he didn't show the slightest effort in trying to sell me the Z06. After I mentioned I own an Audi and a Benz to trade in, his expression immediately brightened up and offered me test drives/incentives/ showed me around the car's features etc.
    I don't blame the salesmen..Since they only earn the majority of their money from successful sales, they can't afford to waste time with those looking for a free drive.

    I had a similar experience. My husband wanted to buy me a diamond ring for my 26th bday, the first day we went to the shops just to see what's out there and were not planning on buying the ring that day. We went after work and were dressed nicely. Every salesperson was going out of their way as soon as we would walk into the shop offering things,showing rings, etc. The next time we went on a weekend and were going to buy the ring that day. We were dressed casually and every time we had to wait forever for someone to show us something, we had to go to them and ask them if we could have a look at something, otherwise no one was talking to us lol we ended up buying the ring and the sales guy was so surprised when we told him we were taking it, and he started offering loan options, imagine his surprise when we told him we are paying by a debit card and don't need a loan lol it was hilarious:)

    This is SO TRUE! I went to a cadi dealer to buy a cts coupe and I was dressed normal. Not to spiffy or special. Immediately they stereotyped me for having poor credit and not having the money to buy the car. When they found out OTHERWISE. They were all over my ass. I bought the car from a different dealer, but gosh. Its true.

    OMG my Dad is so like this! he drives a 100K+ Mercedes but he wears very casual clothes (almost to the point that he looks lower-class). And he will purposely dress that way when car shopping to see which salesman actually cares about the client and gives them a genuine luxury buying experience even when it is not apparent how much money someone has. It is hilarious how many Lexus and BMW sales people have turned their noses up only to literally run over when they see our car as we get in to leave!

    I found it interesting. Same thing happened with my Grandfather. He borned in a humble and poor family and after many work years he got rich. He didnt change his apperance at all and still was humble until he dies. I remember i was around 7/8 when he went to volkswagen stand to buy a car and the dealer didnt give a shit to talk to him because my Grandfather would dress really simple. Crossing the road had the Chevrollet Stand and the dealer was really helpful and didnt care about his looks. I remember my grandfather brought this Bag full of money and paid the car with CASH. Of course, after the dealer see this, he gave a huge % discount to my grandfather due to the fact it was paid in Cash.

    2 years ago my wife and I went car shopping, she was wearing gym cloth and I was wearing sandals, shortpants and a t-shirt, we went to a BMW dealer and asked for the 650i grand coupe and guess what! The dude almost asked us to fuck off, he didnt seem convinced that we were serious about buying so he treated us like wanna be's window shoppers and he even suggested a used cars dealer so we spoke to his manager and they sent him home and the manager called us another salesman but we decided it was too much rudness already so we walked across the street to an Audi dealer and got an A5 and a TT, then we drove the Audis back to BMW and told the manager to pick his sales agents more carefully because that guy's attitud was the only thing that turned our 60-40 BMW Audi and made it a 99-1 Audi overBMW decision and that we were 100% comited to the BMW and thats why we walked in there first, the manager turned red and just apologized to us, never judge a book by its cover

    Years ago, I did a brief stint as a salesman in a car dealership. One day, an older man came in dressed in dirty work clothes like he worked on a farm. All the other sales people did what they could do to avoid dealing with him because they thought he would just be a waste of time.
    So I greeted him and decided to help him. He paid cash for a brand new vehicle that day and, before he left, he told me that he dressed down intentionally because he was looking for someone who wouldn't judge someone based on appearances and he told me he noticed how many of the sales staff ran off when he was coming in to find someone to help him.
    Easy sale. No credit check required. Cash money money!

    Bought my first Mercedes three years ago. After parking my 15-year-old Taurus, I went to the Mercedes-Benz dealership closest to me, and I could smell the attitude in the air. After saying she was busy, a pretty saleslady steered me to the C-class, which was a little tight for this tall, skinny guy. Getting information on the car was like pulling teeth, so I did her a favor and left. A couple of months later, I went to another M-B dealership further from my home, and the vibe was totally different. I bought a brand new E350 sedan, luxury edition, P2 package, etc., and after determining within the first year that it wasn't a lemon, I paid off the note. Funny postscript: I went back to the dealership nearer to me to have my new license plates put on, and a salesman told me that I should go back to where I bought it to have them do it. No joke! But I do go regularly down the street to get my free car washes and mixed nuts, and the service rep is a good guy. Love the car! My only regret now is that I didn't get an AMG version. But I look forward to keeping this baby for a long time.

    I've experienced the same thing. Either I'm dressed in a tailored made to measure suit, or my casual urban wear. (Sneakers, shirt, jeans). I purchased the 2015 S550 (paid in full, without financing) last (July?). When I walked in to dealership there were several salesman there, doing absolutely nothing other than sitting at their desks, and NOBODY approached me. I found it to be funny... because none of them knew they were missing out on a VERY easy sale (I went in with the intent of purchasing the car, THAT DAY). A black woman, who also happened to be new, came up to me. She walked me around and showed me the older S550's, that cost 30-40k, used. I told her I wanted the new one. Shortly after, I went to get a cashier's check, and came back... As they were preparing some of the paperwork, I was standing around in the show room and they pulled up the white S550 from the garage. All of the salesman asked me what car I got... I pointed at the S Class.. and I could tell they all felt stupid. They continued to congratulate me on the car, and asked me questions about what I did and everyone was standing there in a group showing interest ----any good sales person should know that you can't judge by appearance. You should speak to a person first... I'd judge off of a conversation, not how a person looks.

    Ofcourse it has something to do with the appearance, but the attitude of the salesmen is what really counts. When I walk in a store that's ment for like, "rich people", while I'm just wearing school clothes, I sometimes get weird looks and sometimes just get treated the same as all the others in the store, while I honestly have enough money to spend there.

    I did the same thing at Metro Ford. Walked in with jeans and a t-shirt. No one wanted to help me so I picked the guy who looked he needed the commission and I bought myself the best car in the showroom. It was a 93 1/2 Special Edition Convertible. Canary Yellow exterior and white leather interior. When I signed for the car and paid cash of $30,000 I looked at the others smiled and said thanks for all your help. Boy were they upset at the guy who helped me. Their loss!

    Many years ago. . (About 1975) I had a friend who went into a BMW dealership while he was wearing a Belstaff jacket (Google it - Motorcycle jacket made out of waxed cotton. . they always look dirty and greasy because of the wax on the cloth that makes it waterproof). . Anyway, he's checking out the cars and the salesman says "What do you want?. . Not "Can i help you?" or "Are you looking for a particular car, Sir?" or "Good morning!". . Just "What do you want?"
    My friend says "I'm looking at this car. I would like to buy it". . The salesman said "I doubt you could afford it. You need to leave" My friend says "How much DOES it cost?" The salesman says the price (I can't remember what it was back in those days. . but expensive, of course) and after telling him the price again says "I think you should leave".
    Now. . those Belstaff jackets have huge pockets on them, as well as big pockets inside. My friend reaches into those pockets and pulls out CASH worth enough to buy TWO BMW's. . puts it on the roof of the car, and says to the salesman "You're RIGHT. I should leave. I'm gonna go buy a couple of Mercedes instead of this BMW. Fuck you - no commission, cunt!" and walks out. .
    Yes - he DID buy TWO 'his and hers' Mercedes that day!!

    What I would do is dress in completely normal clothes and walk in interested in the a S550. When they start treating me like I can't afford it I pull out a briefcase with $100k and say "Count it bitch"
    But honestly it just depends on the dealership. I went to this one group of dealerships that sold BMW, Audi, and Porsche and none of them cared about me. So I went to the Mercedes Benz dealership that was ran by a smaller group and was greeted by a sales man at the door. Same experience when I compared the their Toyota dealerships too. Same exact inventory but one had salesmen that wanted to sell cars and the other had no salesmen in the showroom.

    This is a stupid experiment. High end Car dealers always get ransoms who wear regular clothes who just stop in to eye their dream cars and try to convince the dealers to allow test drives. So it's obvious that the person who dresses like those window shoppers will get brushed off because the dealers will automatically assume they are window shoppers whom they deal with regularly who waste the dealers time opposed to the man who dresses up and went inside to check out a car.

None of the salesman (except for my FIL) wanted to waste their time with him. Guy asked price on a new car, was told price and amount for trade. Guy sits down, and whips out the CASH without haggling at all! 2 points from this:1) still happening more than 60 years later, 2) ALL the sales reps were eager to help ANY potential customer, no matter what the appearance.

    i proved this theory wrong today, i think this guy was paid off, i went into ferrari-maserati of central florida to take a look(there was a laferrari, 5x 458 speciale a, and customer f12tdf) and they were extremely nice, my mom, who knows nothing about cars was educated by one of the salesmen, and a guy who brought his california to be serviced was really nice too and let me hear the exhaust a little(a lot), and the salesman even offered us drinks and showed us around, they are actually really nice, don't be thrown off by this vid guys, also my dad took his car to be serviced at BMW Columbia, SC in sweat pants and a t shirt, and i was in khaki shorts and a t shirt, and they were still extremely nice to us, offered us drinks there too, and let us see the interior and opened the engine bay of an M6 that was there at the time. i think it works vice versa, at shitty car manufactuers delerships you get shitty service(except honda, where they have small movie theater, arcade, and free drinks and popcorn.) but dont get it twisted, i think this vid is fake, because i had sch a good experience, and even a 458 spider owner came in dressed like he just woke up got met at the door with a smile and they got right to him.

    This is a true story.
    My father worked as a captain and after a trip the men on the ship have had a huge salary and they all wanted to buy the same car. One of them went into the car dealer and said he wanted to buy 10 cars (or something like that) of the same type (this was about 40 years ago, so I dont know the type) and they did not believe him and did not want to give the guy service.
    So he got angry and they bought them somewhere else.
    Then they all lined up and went back to the same car dealer that refused to give them service just to say "hi".
    The car seller got a very long face and had lost a very good paycheck.

What they did was, if they spotted expensive brand (we have different prices for different cigarettes), they would serve that table like they're in love with the guests :D
    Funny enough the only tobacco brand I liked at the time was Parliament and it took me few visits to figure out why waiters were always around my table :D

I was chocked when I heard this and my friend never went back to buy the car, instead he bought a E63 S wagon. Audi then ended up sending him a personal apology but I guess that is the last time my friend will ever put a step into any Audi dealership.
    Moral of the story. If you are a salesman, take everyone seriously because you never know! if you denie a serious customer a test drive. If you are going to do so, then do it in a good manner and let the customer have the chance to show you that he/she is talking business and not bullshit.

    I think that the problem was not the appearance of the guy but the kind of dealership. So if you watch the video you can see that the first place is more of a "not intended for an expensive car buyer" type of dealership, also the dealer wasn't with an as good looking uniform like the one the second dealer had so you could tell that in that place you wouldn't get a great customer service. Then the second place was a better held place, with the glass shining and a good lighting. Also the crew was all uniformed, so you would anticipate a great customer service. The appearance of the guy doesn't prove anything, many billionaires dress casual and own the best cars out there.

    Once at VW/Audi dealership in Norway i waited for the dealer. When the dealer was ready to help me a couple dressed rich came in the door, the dealer looked at them, then me and he went helping them.
    So i went to an other dealer buying a new car.
    Adios VAG 😂

    Lol I always go to my Porsche dealership wearing gym clothes. They still send me invites to all the events, which of course I would dress appropriately for. But they don't turn the service down just because I'm wearing my gym clothes. I still get treated with utmost respect from all of them, and they let me pretty much take a look at what ever I want. Just depends on your dealer and how nice they are I guess.

    It doesn't matter how he dress up. The way he talks is the key to not take seriously what he wants.

    Unfortunately that is society. It's disgusting, how people judge you the way you are dressed, the way you hold yourself and the way you talk. You should get the same service regardless if you are in casual or formal wear. How unprofessional was the first sales guy. Asking you "what do you need the car for?" and "how much do you think the car is for sale?". It's the sales person, who should sell the car to you. I look forward to see your other social experiments. Thank you for sharing :)

    when I went to buy my BMW I walked the dealership for about 30 min. I was also dressed casual, finally someone came up to me and he was awesome. when I went to sign the paperwork the two salesmen that walked past me without offering help were standing at the doorway.

    If a salesman put me down and asked "used?" or "do you know how much that costs?" I would definitely cause a scene, talk to a manager, and write out a check for whatever Mercedes I wanted to get and rub it in the guy's face. lol
    Why the hell would an independent person that has enough brains to make money just walk into a Mercedes dealership without even googling the price of the car he wants?

    To be fair, I'm not saying that the first car salesman was right by any means, but he didn't really care because he knew you wouldn't buy it and he was correct.

    I was with my friend when he bought his C63 AMG and we went with "normal" clothes... They treated him normally. They even let us check out other Mercedes while we were waiting.
