As a Korean I truly dislike the standards of Korean/Asian beauty. Jinkyung is a great example of a unconventional beauty that defies Korean standards. Many Koreans have lost sight of different types of beauty and think that beauty can only be defined by big eyes and small faces. I truly respect Jinkyung for staying the way she is and I hope other Koreans will realize this. Her looks would be much more popular internationally because I see jinkyung as beautiful and charismatic looking as for the idols and other mainstream celebrities as cute/beautiful.

this right here shows how korea has tunnel vision when it comes to "what is beauty". The guy from Greece is explaining his vision or idea of what type of an asian beauty he's attracted to (the model there) while the hosts are trying to push him onto THEIR idea (Korea's infamous one standard of beauty). Like, if you dont pick any of the women from their list of "Korea's beauties" anyone else is just...."ugly"/unattractive to them.

There are people who are generally considered beautiful or pretty by most people and jin kyeoung definitely is not one of those widely considered beauty. In addition, she's known for her comedic side so in a sense she's more of a comedian than a model in korea. They do this in order to make the show more funny to watch (koreans find it funny) If anything, it might be worse in countries like europe because I heard asians basically have to work at laundromat in certain european countries.

As a Korean person living outside of Korea, it saddens me to say this but your observation is not an inaccurate one. Obviously I know this is variety and so sometimes they exaggerate the things they say. Mainstream media and a lot of the general population tend to have tunnel vision, and they have a certain look. They don't call everyone else ugly...they just go over/ignore them and make a big fuss over people like Kim Tae Hee and Suzy. Who I think are pretty, but just that: pretty. A little bland, boring and not distinctive. I feel like this is even more pervasive on mainstream media than in the average Korean, which is a problem because media does have an influence on the populace. Young peeps particularly can be susceptible. A lot of kids in school feel like their features are not desired, not wanted, not good enough according to the standards. Hence the desire to change it. Which is sad.

in my opinion..the mainstream korean beauty has been plastified and mostly has lost the exotic beauty. they all look the same. Idols and actors/tress. but i notice most top models from korea looks exotic and beautiful with their monolids. it just shows that internationally, people still want the models to look original.

We have more idols, actor/actresses n famous ppl who are considered beautiful even with monolids like seulgi and irene (red velvet), kim yuna, rain(snger), lee jong suk, eunji (a pink), lee joon gi, cl, jinwoo (2am), sohee (former member wonder girls), mina (girl's day), nana (after school), gain (Brown eyed girls), park bo young, kim go eun and more...

If you use that argument about things being subjective, you can apply it to anything and there can't be a discussion. Hong Jin Kyoung is beautiful in my opinion. She debuted as a model. It's just her job being a comedian overshadowed her looks. Comparing to the current Korean beauty standards, she does have a V shaped face and quite round eyes for East Asian.

Hong JinKyung is truly very beautiful. Her looks are exotic and symmetrical. Sometimes her humour takes away from the prettiness.. But her humour makes me love her also. I feel definitely that European men usually would like women to look a bit more mature. Women like the ones mentioned have that very child like face; makes them look cute but not beautiful, in a way that a niece or sister could be. In the view of the Europeans. (generally speaking of course; everyone's different still)

I think it also has something to do with the fact that Europeans/Westerners usually have mature features and are definitely used to seeing mature-faced people. Like, it's what they are used to. I think Westerners appeal to her more because our ideal standards of beauty are more different. Parted hair, strong bone structure, fierce eyes, tanned skin. Whereas in Korea, yeah you couldn’t walk up to her and say she was ugly but she doesn’t fit into that “by-the-book” ideal type they admire. Not to say she looks masculine because she doesn’t but I’ve noticed in Western media they tend to go for women with harsher features

I’m so late to this but like yesss finally! Like she is actually so pretty!!! she has a very good and long body and neck, her face is very symmetrical, everything is where it is meant to be like her nose is not too long or shot, her eyes are not too apart or close, her mouth is not too big or small. Everything is perfect she just doesn’t have double eyelids and a smaller face ( it’s not even big) so she is automatically called ugly...

Just bc someone fits the beauty standard doesn’t necessarily means they are attractive like she might not fit the ideal Korean beauty standard but she is very attractive.
Not surprising cause I always find Suzy to be average. She might look good in korean eyes but in international media, she will never be that famous for sure..she doesn't have sharp features or that 'model asian look'. She is just an average face with cutesy looks!
