K5LA takes the cake in this one. I have to say that the K3LA sounds great quilled also. If only the class 1 freight railroads had quills on their horn valves. That would make a K3LA great!
Just picked up a pair of Nathan’s, but I’m having trouble figuring out what they are. It’s a high manifold, raised letter with 1, 2, and 3a bells. K3la I believe would be a 4a bell instead of a 3a bell. Would you have any ideas?
Sounds like it was originally a K3HA/K3H. Guessing someone replaced the #4a or #3 with a 3a. If it originally had bells 1,2,4a (with a high mount manifold) it was a K3HA. If it originally had bells 1,2,3 (with a high manifold) it was a K3H. I guess now it’s a K3HA hybrid
Interesting! Yea no horns are 100% alike. I’ll be putting NRL horns up against each other as well soon. The next horn battle I’ll be uploading will be a K5LA vs K5LLA
Curious to see what would happen if you bore out the 3 bell to see how the K5LA would sound.

Awesome sounding horns !!
K5LA clearly wins. If only most Raised Letter K5s sounded as great as that one.
Agreed! The newer RL horns finally sound decent again.
It isn't actually that clear. They almost sound the same
Most UP trains use the K3LA whereas most BNSF trains use the K5LA horn.
Not really. BNSF used a lot of K3LA as well. The K5LA were usually on CSX and Norfolk Southern.
BNSF would rather use a K3HA
That K5LA literally sounds like every Kansas City Southern SD70ACe

Thank you!
It’s a mutt. Someone swapped the 4a and 3a

Love the sound of your horns. Do you sell them? And can I run 3/4 inch air line thru them? Thanks

Were can buy a k5 La ?
Is there a train horn convention in 2023 ? I live in New England .
Thanks
Yes there will be another. This is a private event unfortunately but there is a public honk at Kentucky steam heritage May 20th
What's the PSI for them? And what could be the max PSI without ruining. I have a k3la
120-130 is the sweet spot. Some people run up too 200psi but over time that can ruin the diaphragms
@@TheHornKing oh and I forgot to ask, does the airline size matter?
Yes at least 1/2ln ID
