I am starting my research into whether or not I should use an RO filter on my out door 400 gallon fish pond, that I'm also using as my own version of an aquaponics set up, currently growing kale. The Kale is alive but compared to kale I'm growing in the dirt its half size or less. I've been researching WHY. I DO have a high PH, around 8. For fish that's fine because its very stable. But I believe the plants want it around 6. I've avoided chemicals of any kind for years, but after some research I put in some Ph Down. It altered NOTHING. Which turned into researching and finding the hardness being high pretty much holds the Ph constant. Further research is suggesting an RO filter. I'm not against it per say, but my head is spinning with where and how to use it. If I'm just taking out impurities so I can manually add some back in, then I'm manually juggling the water quality. I WILL screw that up, dead fish. Is RO something I can hook up and more or less set it and forget it, aside from changing filters every now and then? Or is this constantly babysitting? Where would I pump this "bad water"? The lawn? Or will that kill it? Do I run it in the winter, summer, 24/7? Or just when I add new water? Man. You wouldn't think a fish pond could stress one out.
