The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a leading cancer-fighting organization with a vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. We are improving the lives of people with cancer and their families as the only organization combating cancer through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.
One crucial aspect of our mission is Discovery, which includes groundbreaking research in cancer prevention, detection, treatment, and survivorship. As the largest private, non-profit funder of cancer research in the US, this pillar is essential to our cause.
Meet Svasti Haricharan, Associate Professor at San Diego State University and an ACS Research Grant recipient. Svasti is one of over 790 grant recipients nationwide. As of 2023, ACS has invested $42.8 million for research in California alone.
We also conduct nationwide studies like:
- Facts & Figures: Regularly updated publication that presents current trends in cancer occurrence and survival, as well as information on symptoms, prevention, early detection, and treatment.
- The Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3): A diverse US cohort study of 300,000 participants that will help us better understand the causes of cancer and how to prevent the disease.
- VOICES of Black Women™: A long-term study that aims to enroll at least 100,000 Black women in the US during the next few years to better understand health conditions like cancer and how to improve overall health among Black women
We’re committed to improving the quality of life for cancer patients. Around 1,000 new research grant applications come in each year, with 10-15% approved for funding. Your donations are critical to support more research and make a greater impact.
