    Peregrine falcons are the fastest animals of the land-and it's no wonder, their bodies are built for speed. While cheetahs can run up to 70 mph on land, peregrine falcons can dive at speed of over 200 mph. That's faster than a 100 mph sneeze and around the same speed as a Formula One racing car. Peregrines are light in weight, aerodynamically shaped, and have robust respiritary systems; all of which allows them to be the fastest birds of prey, and animals in general. Peregrine falcon numbers took a massive hit during much of the 20th century in North America. They became nearly extinct because of pesticides, specifically DDT. The chemical made the falcon's-and many other birds - eggshells thinner, preventing the embryos from developing, in addition to poisoning adult falcons. In 1972, DDT was banned and recovery efforts for peregrine falcons began soon after. By 1999, with concerted effort peregrine falcons saw their numbers increase dramatically and were removed the Endangered Species list.

    Diving is the falcon using gravity to increase its own speed - the bird itself is not reaching that speed through its own movement. Cheetahs, on the other hand, reach their top speed through muscle movement alone. As such I would argue that Cheetah speed > Peregrine Falcon speed.
    If a _human_ goes sky diving they'll reach a pretty significant speed too, but you wouldn't consider a human one of the fastest animals, would you?

    • @spaceintuity9194

    They are the fastest. Thats it. I've seen some comparisons in the comment section that are very moronic "if a cheetah falls downs a cliff". That is not a valid comparison. We are talking about a animal that uses gravity and aerodynamics as a means to achieve speed. Also, saying that we should consider humans cause we can use plane, its not valid, cause planes are built, ergo, they we are not fast, its the plane. Or when a plane is going at the speed of sound we say " that human is going at the speed of sound" or "the plane is going at the speed of sound"?

    • @aleksjeff3088
      @aleksjeff3088 6 років тому +7

      The falcon flies very high and then dives in order to get those speeds.
      A cheetah can be sitting doing nothing and next thing you know it's gone, it doesn't need any special condition in order to accelerate very fast and run fast.
      That's the difference.

    • @beepbeepitsabird748
      @beepbeepitsabird748 6 років тому +4

      But a cheetah can't physically reach the same speeds as the falcon, and for not as long either. Even if the cheetah could somehow reach it, it would not be long for this world since it is not built to be like that. Also, cheetahs can't run at their high speeds for very long at all, they *need* to cool

    • @pedrosabino8751

      Friction is a constantly resistive force. Gravity isn't. The falcon literally doesn't exert any force when falling therefore the speed isn't the falcon's achievement. Just like a person sitting on a plane isn't putting in energy to be traveling at such a high speed. Cheetahs are the fastest, all of their movement comes from their own energy.

    Ok, so I googled "fastest animal" and i got the same results as shown on the video: the first page is a Wikipedia article stating that the peregrine falcon is the fastest bird (and also the fastest member of the animal kingdom), the cheetah is the fastest land animal and the black marlin is the fastest sea animal; the second page is a top 10 stating again that the fastest animal is the peregrine falcon. There was no images, but I guess this can vary. My point is that there is no bias for the cheetah and the intro is just a lie to make things more interesting, typical of journalists..

    1:00: "This streamlined figure reduces wind turbulence, maximizes maneuverability, lift, and speed...". It *minimizes* lift. It's wings generate lift, so when it tucks them in, it's no longer generating as much lift. Lift causes drag (this is caused induced drag, pressure drag, or simply lift due to drag), so if the Peregrine wants to maximize speed, it needs to minimize lift (and thus, drag).

    Saying the falcon using gravity means it should be disqualified is an extremely basic way of thinking. You don't have a point of reference for what it's like to move that quickly with control of you movements in a 3D space. Besides falling is part of all locomotion on the planet including running. A cheetah moves the way it does partially because of the way it moves during its flight through the air. Anyone that's run track knows it doesnt become any less technical when both feet are airborne. If you want you can think of a falcons climb and dive as a single bound. It's able to achieve these speeds because of its efforts the way a cheetah never could.
    Plus the falcon rivals the speed of the cheetah even when it's not diving so there's that.

    • @CosmosGTGaming
      @CosmosGTGaming 7 років тому +8

      Carl Simmons Ok cut the falcon's wings and put it on the floor next to a cheeta and make them race (Somehow)... Obviously the cheetah would win because the falcon did not evolve to use its legs to gain speed. Now throw both a falcon and a cheetah out of an airplane and see who can fly faster. Nonsense again because the cheetah did not evolve to fly now did it. Cheetahs run. Falcons fly. Stop comparing everything you see. Is like trying to tell which pepper is more spicy than another... You cannot compare a habanero with a ghost pepper because even though they both cause pain they do so in different ways that may be taken by the body differently.

    To all the people saying the comparison is unfair because humans can skydive:
    The falcon uses its own evergy and muscle movement to reach altitudes that allow it to steep dive at these high speeds. A human skydiving does not. That would be equivalent of climbing a high mountain top and then jumping off, trying to reach 200 mph - that's right, the cheetah dies while the falcon pull 25 Gs.

    doesn't count because it isn't under its own power. It's just falling, and gravity is doing all of the work, while the falcon just stays aerodynamic. Still cool how it can go 200 mph, but it's not like a cheetah, where it is powering itself for the short amount of time that it is at 60 mph.

      @twitte0king 7 років тому +1

      Flynn Gumshoe there is no bias involved... I am pinpointing on her Google search about "fastest animal" the objective fact is that there are more website about "fastest land animal" than "fastest animal". that's why her keyword search yield site that are actually about fastest land animal... also, comet are extraordinary that they travel thru space in long journey and crash on earth crust in crazy high speed! but comets doesn't have any propulsion system that initiated that thrust/manuvalbility, gravity did most of the work. when spaceship and rocket are far more interesting and cooler in terms of propulsion and engineering, like cheetahs, the muscles has to be efficient, any extra gram is dead weight, still they have to pack fuel, the glucose in their muscle has to support all their sudden acceleration without getting too much into anaerobic reaction (which induce muscle strain)... the peregrine is very interesting too, but her way of drawing interest in the begining of film is logically a bit misleading... especially for youngsters who are developing critical thinking.

      Like some other commentators here said, the peregrine's fall is deliberate and repeatable. It's fall is one way it uses to get from point A to point B. Therefore, it is a legitimate means of measuring speed.
      P.S. I think its funny that a simple question like "Is a falcon or a cheetah faster?" can lead to such a serious debate. I was chuckling when I typed all my replies.

    Very good video, very good investigation on the facts of the peregrine falcon speed and a stoop. it was very informative and educational. Thank you for your video.

    And this is why I don’t walk outside the Nat Geo Federal Credit Union anymore. I might get hit by a peregrine falcon.

      Maybe, maybe not. But as I and many other viewers appear to feel, it seems cheap to use such a 'click-bait' title and intro which requires the omission of certain qualifiers such as "the fastest animal in terms of raw speed" i.e. not in terms of distance relative to body size (see Paratarsotomus macropalpis) and allowing for the influence of external, non-reactive forces such as gravity.

      "clickbait"? I clicked because I'm interested in animals and science in general. If you were "lured" by a rather mediocre title that's on you, not them. Secondly, the peregrine falcon IS the fastest bird AND the fastest member of the animal kingdom, as this article clarifies: www.airspacemag.com/flight-today/falling-with-the-falcon-7491768/ "omission of certain qualifiers," now that's laughable. Do you want them to make a documentary just to please you?
      And quit the bullsh*t of "external, non-reactive forces," the falcon has EVOLVED to take advantage of its environment and to reach that speed, just as cheetahs have evolved aerodynamic skeletal frames, including tails as a means of steering to help them make sharp turns (oh look! Cheetahs taking advantage of momentum, velocity, and gravity!). Idiot.

    INCORRECT! With this childish logic you'd have to drop the cat off of a cliff, then you'd only discover that the bird can fall faster. It *cannot* travel faster. Peregrine Falcon straight line speed is 40-60mph. Cheetah straight line speed is 68-75mph. Look it up.

      Also, even if claims of the falcon reaching 71mph are true, Cheetah's have been clocked at 75. Both are beaten by the free-tailed bat in any case.

      philonetic that's a valid point... falcon uses gravity and aerodynamics to gain speed to catch it's pray... but cheetah builds it's own speed in 3sec and maintaince for 20 to 30 sec...

      “Fastest animal on earth” not “fastest animal going in a horizontal straight line on Earth”

      The pengrine falcons use energy to dive, it would be too light to free fall and reach speeds that high
