- OUTBACK EP08: Flying from Halls Creek to Ayers Rock Airport (Uluru) in Australia's red centre. Fly over Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater, through the most remote desert so far on the trip, and see the survival gear I'm carrying.
I'm flying around Outback Australia over two weeks in a Cirrus SR22. If you're new here, hello! I'm Stef, a Private Pilot, and I make regular aviation and travel vlogs. SUBSCRIBE for flying ideas, aviation adventures, destination vlogs, and more.

VERY IMPORTANT: I am a private pilot and am NOT qualified to give flying instruction. This video, like all videos on this channel, has been significantly edited from the original source footage and is provided for entertainment purposes only. Many radio calls and procedures have been omitted. If you have any questions about anything you see or hear, please speak to a Certified Flying Instructor first.
Another great video of your adventure. Thank you for taking the time to produce the videos while doing the adventure. It is not easy doing what you do and it is appreciated. The scenery is breathtaking. Australia is definitely on my bucket list and it will be done sooner than later.
Niko's Wings hey Niko, love your videos too! Yes, please come do some adventures down under!
And take me Paisano...
Niko's Wings Yo Niko! It’s so cool to see you supporting Stef’s channel. You’re two of my favorite producers of aviation content.
An amazing view of the crater! A reminder that I need to spend more time in Australia and explore it!
G’day Stefan,
Once again you have captured the real feeling of crossing some of the most remote landscape on the planet .
You can see 1000s of photos of The Rock but it’s not until you are there that you get the true sense of what a truly mystical place it is and appreciate why it holds a special place in indigenous cultures.
Stay safe
Cheers
John B
John, I found it's one of those few places that truly stands up to the hype. It really is an incredible place to visit. Humbling, and as you said, mystical. When there I had no desire at all to climb it and was more that satisfied admiring it from its base.
I have advised young pilots when I was instructing that if they really want to learn more about aviation, refueling, navigating etc. that they should do exactly what you are doing.
Don't waste hours and hours flying around familiar territory, get out and fly around the state or cross borders.
Those experiences teach you much more about the realities of general aviation than sitting around a flight school chatting or flying within a few hundred nautical miles from your point of departure.
Well done, Steph. You will be actively sowing the seed for many young pilots.
Looking at the terrain you can see why apparently 85% of the population live within 50km of the coast?
Hi Stefan! I’ve been following your channel for a few months now and eagerly anticipate each new episode. This video in particular made me realise I should be thanking you for the inspiration to start my flight training. Tomorrow will be my fourth lesson and I’m loving it! I’m doing the training at Peninsula Aero Club in Tyabb. I believe I’m flying the same Cessna 152 you were in when you visited to do your formation flying episode. Hope you continue to enjoy your trip around Australia and all the best for future vlogging!
Stefan, along with those who as you said may be thinking about taking up flying or getting back into a plane again, there is a group of us who are now retired, like me, who get so much enjoyment from watching your Outstanding Video Presentations, I laughed when you said about there being no line painted across the dessert, wonder how long it would take a crew to do that. Guess we could start up a group called “Awesome”, I use that word so many times, personally it’s the best word to describe your videos. One happy retired guy in West Yorkshire UK 🇬🇧✈️
Hey Stewart, thanks for following the adventure and for leaving that comment. That's really great to hear you're enjoying the videos. And sign me up to the 'awesome' group, there's so much of this world that fits in that category. Really appreciate the feedback, thanks again, stef.
Ive got a jabiru j200 and just passed my NAV endorsement in Shepparton. You have encouraged me and helped make up my mind to do a trip up to here too via Cooper Pedy
take care in coober pedy. its quite an outlaw town. stunning scenery though
Any advice on what to avoid there?
iamskoza - just stay vigilant. We were advised not to wonder off after dinner. Stay in groups. Sounds crazy I know but once you’ve visited you’ll understand. An amazing town none the less
Just came across your channel yesterday by accident and really enjoy your videos. Just have to catch up with the previous legs of your trip. Excellent video and audio quality.
Watching this series makes me want to go to Australia and fly there. In South Africa we have some beautiful landscapes but not ones as vast and open like that.
Made me download Microsoft flight sim 😂
Maybe it's a bit of "belt and braces", but would it be worthwhile to make a laminated emergency checklist (hopefully never to be needed) to cover loss of instruments and getting things such as your survival bag, ELT (and 'Milkshake', of course) ready for rapid evacuation. If kept handy, maybe in a seat-pocket, it would reduce the pressure of "have I got everything I need?" .
Consider yourself forgiven for repeatedly saying “awesome landscape,” as your tour of the Outback takes you over some of the most . . . . . well, awesome landscape I’ve ever seen.
Hi Stefan. Awesome vid. Epic in fact. Subscribed! Loved the outback when I was there. Had the pleasure of flying from Darwin to gurig in a cessna when I was there. Amazing country. I am looking for aerial footage of oz at the moment. Do you have any available or is it available anywhere online?
Thank you for sharing such beautiful views of the Northern Territory. It is a really beautiful part of the country, and it is lovely that you have shared this unique view for those who have never been here.
Hopefully you might be able to travel further North next trip ;-) to see the place I call home - Darwin. You would have some amazing views of Kakadu, Litchfield and all of the Islands from the sky.
Safe travels, and keep up the amazing videos. :-)
What if's I usually do b4 I get in the plane, like, What if it doesn't start?' Well I'll save some money and go to the Pub instead. Seriously, all the pilots I know including myself always ask "What if's" because anything can happen. I've only done cross country flights when I was working on my license years ago and the rest were business related. Now it's just semi local flights. I'm happy 4 u to be able to do this. Fly safe.
Hello Stefan-
I am currently on an Outback marathon and I noticed that most of the time, the takeoffs are all but muted by music. I know that I (I don't know about others) love listening to takeoff sounds, so if you could make at least just one video with a non-filtered SR22 spool up sound, I would really enjoy it. To anyone reading this, please leave a comment if you agree.

How have you only got 16k subscribers you should have at least 400k
Another great video, as this whole outback series has proved to be. A shame you didn’t squeeze in Darwin or Alice Springs... 😏😝
Hi again Stefan ,hope you stayed over night to see the stars ,I didn't realise how beautiful the sky is at night so many stars. We climbed the Rock and got the certificate we stayed 2nights the hotel pool looked so inviting no body in or around it we had it to are selfs , and no wonder the flys were unbelievable we lasted less than 5 minutes but glad we did it what a wonderful Country.you are really selling AUSTRALIA cheers Doug in England 😎🛫🇬🇧
I stumbled across your channel by chance a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. This series is fantastic. I just wanted to reiterate your comments in this video and the comments of others about inspiring people. I used to fly weekly up until about 15 years ago but life got busy and it just slowly drifted away from me. I managed to fly as pax and crew mostly in choppers every now and then with my job which kind of kept me going and satisfied my interest, but my passion for all things aviation since I was a kid has never waned. Watching your videos has inspired me to want to get back into the cockpit and go flying again and do this sort of stuff. Thankyou Stefan.
Great video. Good to think of what if so you can be prepared. Growing up in cold winter climates in northern Minnesota, we had to have a survival bag for driving in the -100F windchill environment. Thanks for showing part of the Australian country.
Superb video Stef, great editing and choice of music also. Just twenty days until I start my Australian adventure in Cairns!
Very envious of this leg. We drove through Halls Creek about a month ago but couldn’t tow our van down to Wolfe Creek crater so we missed it.
It would have been a good idea to clean the oil from the bottom of the plane before taking off again so you'd know if it were still leaking anything new. Maybe you did and didn't show it, but there could still be a leak that is not immediately obvious by looking at the level, yet still is an indicator of a more serious problem that could be brewing under the cowling where you cannot see and/or did not look. It's just good housekeeping to keep oil off the paint and to allow you to know if more oil is continuing to leak out....
Was that a fly keeping you company in the cockpit lol? He/she must like the videos as much as us 👍🏻👍🏻
Great video stefan! I envy your adventure and glad you sharedit with evryone. Just a suggestion, perhaps you can get a electric scooter which is light amd nifty to get you from airport to hotels or at least the nearest station.
You can tell you're at Uluru because you're surrounded by flys. hah
Thanks Stef for sharing your adventure with us. We do appreciate the extra work that goes into producing these videos. I know the work that goes into mine and they only come out once a week. I like what you say about valuing your efforts and how it can impact on others. Nothing like as adventurous as yours but it is a good feeling when I hear that someone has crossed the channel for the first time having watched the videos I have done. You are doing a good job with the series and doing it very well! 👍 🇬🇧
I chose to not like the video only to keep the like amount at 767
Hi from Reunion island , I am a computer sim pilot.
Lovely place. I have flown from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock airport on Qantas 717. Did my first helicopter ride over Uluru and the Olgas in late afternoon. Fantastic experience. Mum got up front with the pilot. I was in the back with French and Japanese tourists. Oh well. Cheers Stef. Safe flying.
Thanks Stef, YHLC-YAYE
I laughed when you said its worth staying up till 2am editing the Vlogs I know how you feel. I drove an all electric car (Nissan leaf) from UK to Malta a while back and made a Vlog diary of it. Only managed to upload the first two episodes, not because I wasn't getting the editing done, but because there was never good enough wifi signal to upload!!! So very impressed how you are managing to edit, and upload in the middle of nowhere!! great episode. Ayers Rock Airport is also on my itinerary for next year, so its interesting to see. Last time I was at Uluru, I was 29 yrs old in a hire car with a bunch of dudes (1997) thanks again stefan....
Ah yes, the struggles of good internet when travelling. I have to give credit to Telstra 4G for a lot of this trip, I've been tethering to my phone to upload a lot of the time, and apart from a couple of stops I've had a pretty reliable 3G or 4G connection to be able to get the videos out. Enjoy your trip to YAYE next year Tim.
Stefan, what flight planning software are you using? are you using OzRunways? - and presumably your filing a flight plan for each leg right?
I'm using AvPlan EFB, and yes I've been filing either a VFR or IFR flight plan for every leg.
Hey Stef, I thought of writing this half way through the video but as I came to end, you pre-empted. Will write anyway. People follow Che Guevara's motorcycle diary trail. Some follow Marco Polo's trail and that of other famous travellers. People in future will fly your route. I certainly will, when I have some time. You don't just fly and film. You also have a unique talent of describing what you see. Also your passion with learning more details of what you see.
Thank you, that's such a nice thing to hear. I'd love for other pilots to fly a trip like this as well. It's certainly been one of the most rewarding aviation experiences of my flying life so far. Good luck with your flying, and thanks for leaving that comment, stef
Are you coming through Cairns?
Another inpiring video Stef. Would it be of value to tell viewers what's in your emergency bag? Also, I noticed you filled up KJN just after landing. With freezing nights in the outback, is that to stop water condensation in the fuel tanks should they be left less than full?
Happy to share what's in the grab bag for sure Michael, I can make a video on that after this adventure is done. And yes I refuel on arrival for that reason, but also so that it's one less thing to do in the morning when departing. Also in some remote airfields they can run out of fuel, so if there's fuel available when I land I generally try and fuel up then, in case it's run out before I want to depart the next day.
If you ever do another trip like this, just know that you will be responsible for me converting my license and moving to Australia (ones I have my ATPL of course). Seeing these videos makes me want to return to Down Under and see more than I did the first time. And that time I woudn't care that Christmas should be the during winter and not summer, I promise.
Uh oh, then definitely unsubscribe from this channel immediately if you don’t want to see more flying adventures like this... 😄
I have been watching your videos everyday for the past 6 months. You have inspired me to get my PPL. I'd like to let you know that it is because of your adventures and you that I have now begun the process. Thank you very much Stef!!
Hey Paul, that’s amazing to hear! I’m always so proud to hear when someone has decided to start with (or get back into) aviation and/or travel as a result of watching this channel. That’s amazing to hear, I wish you all the very best with your flight training and look forward to sharing the skies with you.
What program do you use for your great edits?
That epic outback flight must've been boring seeing no mountains nor hills but I guess there's always something to capture your eye. Nice to be at Ayres Rock Airport.
We walked around the Rock. Extreme long distance walk. About 12ks after you walk into all the interesting bits and back out again. A few snakes you have to keep an eye out for as you walk, including the death Adder, pythons, black and brown.
As a pilot who for medical reasons has just given up my licence thanks for taking us along on the trip. Always wanted to visit the places you have by air but was not to be ( now doing it with a van in tow 😀). Looking fwd to seeing the rest of the trip.
I know not you mean
It’s an awesome place!.... its definitely has a power to it. Glad you got to experience it. 👍👌 make you very proud To Australian
Stefan, next time you do this, take the Mrs., with you. I've never been to Australia so watching your informative videos is going to have to do. Thank you.
"Nothing to see" (in a conventional sense) yet SO much to actually see. Nice one, Stef.
At least you wouldn't have to worry about crocs if you had to put down in the middle of nowhere. Just other creepy crawlies...and perhaps even Bradley John Murdoch 😜 (of Wolfe Creek fame / infamy).
Hey Stef, as a student pilot at Moorabbin I have learnt the harsh truth that literally everything in aviation is expensive, not just the flying! However, I am about to start doing my first navigation flights, and am considering forking out some money to put towards a decent flight bag (so I don't have to upgrade in the near future), what would you recommend? (skylines is definitely an option unless you have a better choice!)
Hi Stefan,
I follow you on UA-cam for a few months and I confirm that your videos inspire! you make a beautiful trip that makes you want to discover Australia and push the limit ... so thank!
Fly safe!
Did you follow the Tanami track. You can see it clearly many Road Trains use it they leave dust plumes. 5000’? I like 10000’ myself in a single when I fly. Because you have more time to glide. Even though you have a chute that aircraft would have a great glide ratio.
Love your videos. Thanks Stefan. Is that a crack in the windscreen? I'd never noticed it before.
I hope not! No, definitely no cracks in the windshield. Probably either a dead bug or a reflection I'm guessing.
Your videos are inspiring indeed. Videos like this have finally pushed me over the line to convert my Glider Pilot Licence into PPL, so that I can go a little farther than a few hundred kilometres triangular course from the base airport. Well done!
Still catching up with the rest episodes in the series...
Hi Stephan. I fully endorse your comments about the beauty of our empty country, which is there to be treasured and enjoyed. Regrettably, most of our fellow country men and women may never see it and thus rely on people like you who are able to explore and show it. Q: was that the Wolf Crater you flew over. Please continue to show us more of our country the way you do : simply enjoying it and showing it as it is.
It was a few years ago that we went to Uluru and stayed at the resort for 3 nights with great tours hosted by local aboriginal guides. What an amazing sight it is from the air. I love how the colours change during the day from sunrise to sunset - a truly magical and spiritual place, thanks for sharing Stef!
Thanks for these great videos, Stef! I was lucky enough to have my parents take me to a lot of these outback destinations as a child (albeit in a car!). Not only has this most recent journey reaffirmed that I need to get back to see these places again soon, you've definitely inspired me to bite the bullet and get my PPL.
Hi Stefan: Everyone should aspire to touch the sky as you do and go to places we dream about. Like Niko you need to keep an eye on that prop governor/oil leak possibility. Fly on and have fun my friend. Mel
Fantastic views incredible crater wish i was in the cockpit with you, looking forward to you showing us around Ayers rock, and maybe over it as well
Love the videos and the time you put into them. We were just at the Texas "Uluru" Enchanted Rock this weekend and Ive always wanted to see the real one. Thanks for taking us along!
Hey, mate! I'm enjoy your videos and what you're doing is really inspiring me to get out and do something like that!!
haha, seriously, they're awesome! Where are you headed when you get to QLD?
Really loving this series Stef, Thnx for the ride along... Bucket List for you I hope, checked off...
As a relatively new viewer here, does Milkshake have a back story? How did she become your good luck charm?
No..Thank you Stefan
Just finished my last exam and my pilots licence is in the post. Your videos are giving me ideas...
it was a great video as usual, i think that you are an excellent movies maker, yes i said movies because for me its looks that, so thank you.
I was based in Halls for my first year as a CPL. Best year yet. Great to see that country to the south again.
So cool, it is amazing views, thanks for bringing us along!!
As soon as I get a notification that a new video has been published I cant wait to get home drink some tea and watch it
amazing scenery, thanks for capturing all of this.
Thank you very much for showing me Australia!!
Good to have you following along Frederick. Glad you're enjoying this beautiful country.
Thanks to you I am able to see a lot of your wonderful country Australia!
Thanks for the video! These videos inspire me to soon go for my RPL.
Love the videos! Now if I could just get myself to vlog some of my flight!
how close did that meteorite come to hitting the visitors centre?
Haha, that genuinely made me chuckle.
On ya stef.
Australia, a vast country. Love that red red color.
They don’t call it the GAFA for nothing.
Great views well done, again.
#Stefan are u from UK?!
cuz ur inglish is different...
Great stuff!
👍👌
Always be Ayres Rock to me.
Uluru and Kata Tjuta are stunning from the air. My wife and I were there a few months ago for a weekend. We did a scenic flight in a C 172 - absolutely breathtaking.
Awesome Clay, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Fantastic experience for sure.
