Heard of Toller Cranston but never saw his skating before. Wow, it is so interesting to watch. Compared to today where they skate, jump, spin, jump.... Toller is amazing!
He was a revolutionary and was such a wonderful influence on figure skating. After more than 35 years, all of his performances stand the test of time - never appearing dated! He was so innovative and really left his mark. His skating is a thing of beauty to watch - for the athleticism, the stunning artistry, and the feelings it evokes. Thank you, Toller!
He was so exciting to watch - ahead of his time. No one beat him for artistic expression but the judges were tough on him in the other requirements as Toller just couldn't be put in a box!
RIP Mozart! We remember and love you!!
I wish I could have seen him skate live. In these film clips, he never looked like he was prepping for his jumps; everything just flows. You can see where skaters like Paul Wylie were influenced by Toller Cranston's artistry. His camel spins were so beautiful - as special as any triple jump.
I do really agree with Loutyr and k9henrydog and with you, skateindreams. I too think he deserved the gold overall. Wish these "flaming" compulsories had not been there. Then he SHOULD HAVE WON THE GOLD as he won the SP and LP. Toller always was very strong in both his technical and astistic programme and very consistent.
Cei magnifique!! There are no words in English to convey how fantastic this was!! It is every bit as wonderful as I remember it. I wish the crowd response could have come thru, because they were just going NUTS!! The Skater of the Year 2000!!! I wonder when we will see the skater of the year 2035!!!
R I P TOLLER CRANSTON! We remember and love you
i think most Perfect skating era at 70'S pure of artistic..today figure skating become an Acrobatics.. footwork become copy and paste..personality trademark no more..rip my king
Such a hodgepodge of music would be unthinkable now, but you can certainly see what a huge influence he's had on skating in general, and certainly on Canadian skaters. You can follow it through Brian Orser to Kurt Browning right on up to Jeffery Buttle and Emanuel Sandhu. I vividly remember watching him when I was a kid.
Figures were still a major part of the mark. The judges did not understand the difficulty of his combination jumps . Many of his position’s defied gravity. 50 years ago!
What music does he use starting at 5:03? Sounds like Russian balalaika music, but I can't find it anywhere? Does anyone know how I can get my hands on it?
@morgenshmorgan oh, right, I looked it up... I guess Abbot and Mroz were the other Olympic team members from the US... but it shows how poor a job the media is doing of covering, that I didn't know that.... Throughout the 90s i knew who EVERYONE was. And I didn't have any internet access... nor was the internet then what it is today... but today, TV media barely covers skating, I barely know the skaters by name.
Toller had this ethereal quality to his skating that was just fantasitc, unique. The best.
I remember the era and the wonderment. Thank you Toller.
Toller paid the price for being way ahead of his time. Magnificent and totally innovative and creative. Thanks for posting!!!

No more to say.......perfect take-off's, wondeful edges and very light spins......a remarkable artist!!! WOW!!!!! He truly deserved a GOLD!!!

He was not good at figures. Under todays scoring system he was a gold.
@@robinritchie323 - That’s correct! As I said … “Toller couldn’t be put in a box; he was so artistic”.
I always liked Toller Cranston and thought he was underestimated at the time. He had the best moves!
I LOVE skating and I could watch that plenty of hours!
Toller is the greatest! A marvelous eight minutes. I don't know the skaters of today but dig the ones of yesterday!
He was a GOD on the ice , but he never got first place ... very sad .

The BEST to ever do it!! On ice, he was a GOD!!
I've recently discovered his other art, his paintings and other works are also phenomenal!
RIP, a great skater!
I'd love to see more U.S. footage of him - Dick Button really liked his skating, and I like hearing his commentary.
Dick button was inconsistent in his commentary.

RIP
🙏👏👏👏👏👏💕
why did they edit out the audience reaction?

@morgenshmorgan Who are Abbot, Mroz, & Co? Not sure who you are referring to?
Beautiful camel spins - but his back-cuts! Just hate the way he wiggles his body on his back-cuts.
but in fact Jan Hoffmann of GDR won that short program
