I'm a Swans fan through and through and it's hard to understand how this could have happened. Sorry Crows fans, it was a magnificent comeback and should have been recorded as a successful one.
AFL has been getting worse and worse officiating wise. Just look at Jeremy Cameron's 2 goals against Collingwood last week. They were not judgment errors and many decisions have been blatantly obvious this season. The AFL likes controlling what happens. $ > fair competition in their eyes
Just like in cricket captains should be given the ability to force two maybe three ARC reviews per game and it's then up to the captains to use them as they see fit.
It just goes to show, that there does need to be a player review system in place, quite a number of sports have it these days, with the AFL being a bit behind the times with that, that decision was diabolical, and as a crying Crows supporter once said "they were robbed, right in front of me," this time around that statement not only aged like a fine wine, it is true.
Player review systems, and review systems more generally, tend to work better in stop-start games with definitive breaks in play. And even in cricket, among the sports with most obvious regular discrete breaks (after each delivery), there are multiple problems. Australian Football doesn't have that break on a no-score or behind.
@@TheGreatLordDufus there is still a slight pause after a scoring opportunity after the ball crosses the line, there should still be limits, such as no review between the arcs, but only done within the arcs itself, and if there is an apparent mistake, and each team only gets two reviews per quarter, and even if they get it right, that review is used up.
As a Richmond supporter this an absolute joke the umpire needs to go to spec savers. I know Collingwood beat geelong but Cameron gets away with mark out of bounds an goal an a hand ball which was out of bounds 2 goals not deserved 😡. Umpires should be held accountable fines and back to vfl
I’m not even an Adelaide supporter but this made me so unimaginably Angry. Adelaide played such a great game to come back from 44 points down! They deserved this win. The fact this absolute potato of a goal ump didn’t review that goal is PATHETIC.
Okay then, with a comment like that then you should be saying that Melbourne ought to have got awarded the 4 points against your mob last week too, because there was inconclusive evidence to suggest that Christian Petracca's kick for goal got touched. Total bias here. I'm sure that you gleefully accepted that decision going in your team's favour.
Maybe if after the siren the ‘point/goal’ was kicked it might make sense. Even so.. would set a bad precedence. (Eg, team complaining an umpire error in first quarter cost them etc..). But, that should have been reviewed on the spot. Shocking it did not.
Shocking. You could tell by the body language from the Swans players that they themselves would've just preferred to have had that decision overturned so they wouldn't have to live with the guilt.
Gill said goal umpire heard the ball hit the post and sad part is the CEO was sucked into that comment. The bloody noise was so loud the goal umpire would not have heard a bulldozer hit that post.
As a lifetime Swans supporter, I'm 66, the decision against the Crows was not only sad but also obviously incorrect, you have my commiserations! Also cold comfort but I really think your team had the talent to go far in September.
There are hundreds of decisions made in a game and many of them are made wrong. Anyone of them could have affected the game the oither way. They need to simplify the rules, too many 50/50 decisions which causes these issues.
Because you can’t 100% be sure the game would have ended like that. Had it been a goal, there was enough time for the swans to score from the next centre bounce and win so you can’t 100% say Adelaide would have won had that counted, even though it’s obviously quite likely
Because there was still plenty of time for the swans to kick a goal and take the lead. Not saying it would have happened but it’s kind of unfair on the swans to punish them for the umpires mistake. If anything they should call to a draw
A minute is too long to know one way or another, if the kick was after the siren, or maybe like 10 seconds from it, then perhaps, but, as bad as the swans were playing in that last quarter, ya never know
Have all of us forgotten that it was only a few years ago that Josh Jenkins hit the post in a showdown match that was awarded a goal by the goal umpire, and Adelaide ended up winning by less than a goal because of that incorrect decision? Adelaide supporters were happy to take the win on that occasion. This is a case of what goes around comes around. Umpires are human, they will make mistakes sometimes, but what we are always told growing up as kids is that the umpire's decision is final and that it's not going to be changed once it's been made. Sometimes you get lucky with these incorrect calls, other times you don't, but usually it evens itself out in the long run. To anyone kicking up a fuss about the Crows being robbed, just remember the Josh Jenkins decision that went their way in the showdown a few years ago. Also remember that there are many moments in 120 minutes of football that cost a team victory, not just one incorrect umpiring decision.
I think all calls by the goal umpire should be verified by video analysis technology for these high stake games. Very unsettling for fans and clubs when the wrong decision is called. Happened the other week when the umpire called touched on melbourne’s goal v blues
It should have been reviewed (it would have been a goal), and now what the AFL should do is award the win to Adelaide to make up for their admitted error.
I am not sure if I will watch AFL again. What's the point! .... This game has been ruined by many things. We need a protest to change this result and maybe Adelaide should boycott the 2024 season in protest.
A farce like this is going to happen in September and cost a team their season literally. I can only hope and pray that it doesn't happen to my team, but it probably will. It is now at the point where every possible goal needs to be reviewed even if it holds up play by 30 seconds. We can't have these types of results. It impacts so many people in so many different ways.
I am not a Crows supporters, but I would support action against the AFL over this, a crowd strike or protest - simply unacceptable and the AFL should make an apology to the Adelaide Crows and their fans.
As Cornes said, they review every goal - as occurred when Kelly's last quarter goal in the GWS v Essendon match was overturned yesterday. They even told the field umpire in that case not to recommence play until it had been determined that the ball had grazed the post (with GWS more than 100pts ahead). As is typical of the AFL, the stupidity of their rules allows play to be recommenced from a kick-in after a behind has been adjudicated by the goal umpire - unless a review is requested. Once play has recommenced any scoring issue becomes irrelevant. There is no doubt the Sydney players knew it was a goal and took the kick-in as quickly as possible before the Adelaide players had a chance to object to the call - in which case the field umpire may have called for a review.
WHAT a coincidence that SYDNEY benefit from this "mistake" that costs Adelaide their season... good work AFL, always going above and beyond to try and sell footy sell tickets in NSW
I thought all goals get reviewed anyway. When you have no head of football to address the farcical umpiring this year, this outcome is no surprise. Not a Crows supporter either.
They need a couple of adjudicators sitting in front of multiple video screens who are able to review contentious incidents to stop these sort of decisions ruining matches and entire seasons, because umpires on the field are influenced by external factors and sometimes make rushed decisions.
Worst umpiring decision is hands down the Tom Hawkins goal that literally bounced off the post in the 09 Grand Final. For a match with that higher stakes and closeness to have that error is a disgrace. The Saints could argue they lost the flag over that!
I’m a Cats fan. Then to even it up, Riewoldt got a free free and then a free 50m penalty to kick a goal. I didn’t care that the umpires actually gave St.Kilda a free goal to compensate. It was pretty obvious.
I don’t agree with the goal umpire being sanctioned for the mistake, he should be counselled about asking the umpires for a review. You can see Blakey’s hand hits the padding just as the ball passes the post. The goal umpire has mistaken the noise of the hand on the pad and the movement of the post as being the ball hitting it. Pretty innocent. But there should be a process for teams to ask for a review in these circumstances. We see it all the time with players claiming to have touched the ball when they clearly haven’t. Reviews of those are based on player protests.
I follow the Bloods and can’t believe that wasn’t a goal. It was a great kick. So many great goals are denied by the AFL’s obsession with “was it touched by a fingernail” etc when the slight touch did not effect the trajectory of the ball at all. Soccer is way ahead of the AFL on this as if it hits the post or another player on the way through it’s still a goal. Takes all the contention out of it …
Can't take away the ball hitting the post as a point mate, that's one of the iconic things about footy, so is the touched behind, think of all the great players like SOS and Archer who rushed back to touch the ball on the line just before it passed through for a goal, it's part of what makes the game what it is
If you allow touched balls to be goals then you have to draw some lines. You'd have to decide if it's only the balls that haven't changed trajectory by being touched and then you'd have to list exactly what that entails and then what? Interpretation. Should a glancing spoil that went through be counted? What about a direct spoil that punched it through? You can see how it gets murky
Sadly this will deny the Crows a premiership. Their road form was exceptional with 7 straight road losses to Geelong, Western Bulldogs, Gold Coast, Collingwood, Essendon, Melbourne and Brisbane

I thought that all goals were reviewed before the centre bounce. I’ve seen instances where the umpire was about to bounce the ball and it was called back, so why wasn’t it done on this occasion? These situations are the very reason we have this technology. SMFH
if the tv broadcast can show clear replays of it between the time of the goal or point and restart of the play, i think it should be able to be reversed or contested
Why can't the AFL follow the SANFL umpires who were hats with cameras ? The umpire ducked at the same time that the players jumped and quite possibly blocked his vision for the critical second. The camera's on the umpires have great vision and would certainly be a positive addition to the technology.
Other sports have this, they go back and check every call to see if a score was made or not. LITERALLY EVERY OTHER SPORT. Soccer can take away goals 10min after the fact, basketball can take away points after the fact. But AFL is so primitive it can't comprehend that technology is superior to human eyes
The captain of each football team should be given the right to (say 2 challenges) per game. If the call is correct, the challenge remains. if it's not, a challenge is removed. (Similar to Tennis) Whilst I am no Crows supporter, this was just a shocking mental collapse from all the officials who have through their utter ineptitude, prevented a team from playing finals footy. Just when we think umpiring can't possibly get any worse, they somehow manage to outdo themselves! Now imagine this was a PRELIM!!!!!!
Once again AFL management has failed to take accountability for such a farce but rather pass the buck and blame "human error". The little guy is once again made the scapegoat. The necessary rules and systems need to be put in place to deal with such scenarios. This is the responsibility of management.
Absolutely pathetic by the AFL to not overturn the result. I know there was 70 seconds left, and an argument can be made that Sydney could have scored, but look at the context of the game, Swans had scored 1 point in the qtr and Crows had all the momentum. Enough with the "oopsie, we messed up" it was the second time this season and it's not good enough
Gotta feel sorry for the crows. Smashed port twice, lost the pies by under a kick twice, smashed Brisbane at home and lost by a goal at the Gabba. It’s gotta be a hard pill to swallow this year.
Every time I've seen a goal review on TV, it was demanded by a field umpire. There are 4 of them out there, yet all of the blame has gone to the goal umpire who has become the sacrificial lamb. In recent weeks, there have also been bungles by the review umpires. In one case, the ball glanced the padding at the back of the goal post after it had completely crossed the line. These guys don't have any understanding that the padding is a lot broader than the line.
How can an Umpire standing on the Boundary Line NOT see Dangerfield mark the ball Outside the Line, and that was just one of MANY......the Umpiring has been disgraceful.
WHEN WHEN WHEN is the AFL bring in a law that s a GOAL even if it touches the post as long as it goes in the GOAL AREA like Rugby League Soccer all Other SPORTS Hitting The Post Which Ever Way It Goes Goal Or Behind Adelaide Should PROTEST
TJ once again proving he doesn't know what's he talking about. Last week he said to get rid of reviews & this week he's blaming technology! Have to feel for the goal umpire. In the heat of the moment he didn't seem to be in any doubt & was confident in not reviewing it. Obviously it looks like he was wrong but with commentators constantly whinging about goal reviews & how much time is wasted & everyone giving their 2 cents to get on with it (I'm looking at you BT), the poor kid wilted under pressure. On a side note, the swans should be embarrassed they're in the 8. They've been gifted 2 wins this year from controversial umpiring decisions late in games (this plus the North interchange blunder)
How can you say you feel for the goal umpire? You’re the problem…. He can easily review it and take it out of his hands. Over this pathetic sympathy crap
Maybe team captains need to be allowed to call for a score review if they don’t agree with the decision like cricket but limit it to 1 per game and only score reviews?
It's worse when the umpire calls it a goal and without definitive proof with good camera angles the goal reviewer changes the decision in seconds flat so you lose a preliminary final. Richmond v Brisbane final last year.
All this huff and puff about how to fix this from ever happening again - the answer is right under your noses. How can you not see it? If a ball hits the post and goes in, goal. Goes out onto the ground, play on. Goes in the point section of the goals, 1 point. Goes out, throw in. just because this is used and works in other sports, doesn't mean it mustn't be used in this 1 sport. Wake up to yourselves AFL and end this ridiculous rule. Rugby and soccer woke up to it over a century ago!

And were Fitzroy also robbed of a victory against the Crows at Football Park in 1991 because the Crows got the rub of the green in the final 2 minutes of the match, receiving a succession of controversial free kicks? What short memories we've got. Or perhaps you hadn't been born yet in 1991.
@@darrenmiles-morland8038 Not sure how that game is relevant to this

This is the crows second lose from terrible umpiring. They also cost the crows a free kick against Collingwood to Dawson in the dying seconds. Maybe he doesn’t kick the goal but now 8 premiership points lost due to the afl. No wonder more and more people feel the game is bias and corrupt. My need to find a nrl team to follow.

@@silverslave333 I am not sure they care. Tickets keep selling so they will keep on keeping on. Wouldn’t be half surprised to see a wanted top 8 in afl hq at the start of each season.
@whatthe3131 sadly I remember that as well. Isn’t just Adelaide it happens to either. Suspect you look back at most interstate team and they would all have multiple monomers like that. Just to remind us that it’s the vfl we are just lucky to be able to play.
NRL have reviews but still let go forward passes.
Not to mentions the crows game against Melbourne, that game had terrible umpiring
I'm a Swans fan through and through and it's hard to understand how this could have happened. Sorry Crows fans, it was a magnificent comeback and should have been recorded as a successful one.
Crows 5 yes 👍🏻
You guys lost today and should be out of the finals, but this is nothing more than a shrug of the shoulders kind of incident for the AFL.
There was no reason why that should not have been reviewed, players should be able to call for video review. The result should be overturned.

It was touched mate, get over it@@darrenmiles-morland8038
Maybe if after the siren the ‘point/goal’ was kicked it might make sense. Even so.. would set a bad precedence. (Eg, team complaining an umpire error in first quarter cost them etc..).
But, that should have been reviewed on the spot. Shocking it did not.
Big issue too say it was a clear point that crows would have zoned up, and not allowed to swans to take the ball away so easily
I still don’t understand why the result can’t be changed knowing the mistake cost the crowd a finals birth
Exactly ! Swans should had the win to the Crows. Anything else is just wrong ! I seriously think its rigged
A minute is too long to know one way or another, if the kick was after the siren, or maybe like 10 seconds from it, then perhaps, but, as bad as the swans were playing in that last quarter, ya never know
Is there a chance of getting a coach challenge for cases like this
Have all of us forgotten that it was only a few years ago that Josh Jenkins hit the post in a showdown match that was awarded a goal by the goal umpire, and Adelaide ended up winning by less than a goal because of that incorrect decision?
That so called point was reviewed.
Swans supporter here, we got away with this, it was a goal. And now we are finals bound.
I’m never one to complain about the umpiring, but I’ve never, ever, seen an umpiring season as bad as season 2023, something needs to change
😂
Ridiculous and embarrassing. The umpire was right there.
Why can't the players call for a referral? Why is it left up to the umpires?
Good on TJ for calming down the pile on on the goal umpire, probs already copped enough death threats.
The AFL says every goal is reviewed before we get back to the centre bounce. Do they need to start reviewing every behind as well?
A farce like this is going to happen in September and cost a team their season literally. I can only hope and pray that it doesn't happen to my team, but it probably will. It is now at the point where every possible goal needs to be reviewed even if it holds up play by 30 seconds. We can't have these types of results. It impacts so many people in so many different ways.
Taking into account the win against north Melbourne as well, Sydney are frauds to make finals this year
Why wasn’t it checked immediately after the score?
riiged
What a surprise a controversial call goes Sydney way...
Of course afl own Sydney I'm sure

All goals get reviewed, but this was never called a goal and therefore not reviewed.
An absolute disgrace
Season ending
It was a Goal
Goal umpire needs to be investigated.
Why is it just the goal umpire just stood down??? Surely the other umpires and ones who control the video review system should be held accountable too
I thought that every goal is reviewed regardless of what the goal umpire ruled, whilst the ball is being sent back to the centre bounce.
I thought every goal/point was automatically reviewed irrespective of whether it was referred?
every goal
I've been thinking this for a long time. I 100% agree
Over the years there’s been decisions like this not the first and not the last .
nothing brings the game into more disrepute than this!
Sadly this will deny the Crows a premiership. Their road form was exceptional with 7 straight road losses to Geelong, Western Bulldogs, Gold Coast, Collingwood, Essendon, Melbourne and Brisbane

The umpires robbed us all year
So many games clear free kicks were not paid which gave our opponents the momentum and with 5 games losses by less than a kick to have so many free kicks gifting opponents goals and not being paid to us cost us finals , 1 free kick can change a game , this is not the first time it's happen ....
The games corrupt i hate to say it..
The only sport where umpiring decision making isnt reviewed entirely Rediculous
This non decision has robbed the Crows of their destiny. Absolutely unforgivable . AFL hold your head in shame.
As much as we all hate rule changes.. we absolutely need a captains call review rule
You can only split the points with time left on the clock which doesnt affect Crows making finals anyway
the crows could still make the 8 with that win, and west coast next week is an ez win. Robbed.
Stupid idea, really dumb. Brainless.
Once again AFL management has failed to take accountability for such a farce but rather pass the buck and blame "human error". The little guy is once again made the scapegoat. The necessary rules and systems need to be put in place to deal with such scenarios. This is the responsibility of management.
Change the result. Give game to Crows.
There’s always drama at AO. Pretty sure something like this happened in a showdown years ago as well
@whatthe3131 no way!! That’s not just a coincidence.. he’s bad at his job

Lets go back to Geelong hitting the post in the GF against St Kilda and that being called a goal.
Thats 100% a bigger mistake than this.
And Collingwood hit the post in 2011gf.
It’s gotta be a hard pill to swallow this year.
if they really deserved to be in the finals it wouldnt be down to a single goal
Every time I've seen a goal review on TV, it was demanded by a field umpire. There are 4 of them out there, yet all of the blame has gone to the goal umpire who has become the sacrificial lamb. In recent weeks, there have also been bungles by the review umpires. In one case, the ball glanced the padding at the back of the goal post after it had completely crossed the line. These guys don't have any understanding that the padding is a lot broader than the line.
Check the gambling
How can an Umpire standing on the Boundary Line NOT see Dangerfield mark the ball Outside the Line, and that was just one of MANY......the Umpiring has been disgraceful.
Wait till it costs someone a Grand Final.
Can't hide gill.
Remember the obvious/bad calls during the geelong v pies game? Why is the WAFL doin the “stop umpire abuse” when they keep doin this?
WHEN WHEN WHEN is the AFL bring in a law that s a GOAL even if it touches the post as long as it goes in the GOAL AREA like Rugby League Soccer all Other SPORTS Hitting The Post Which Ever Way It Goes Goal Or Behind Adelaide Should PROTEST
Umpires should face fines and suspension for serious errors, just like players.
The Umpire shoulda gone to SpecSavers.
Nothing controversial about North not following the rules.
i just dropped an absolute whopper poop in taco bell a real drain blocker
Maybe team captains need to be allowed to call for a score review if they don’t agree with the decision like cricket but limit it to 1 per game and only score reviews?
That's typical of the AFL, they screw up all the time and this is an absolute shocker.
Even as a port fan, thats a goal 100%. Regardless of who you support, the fact is that that is unacceptable.
Worst that you can remember? Literally happened in the lions tigers final last year
All goals are reviewed apparently. Apparently not.
I am a Port supporter but the Crows are my second team as I am a proud Croweater and I would have loved too see both our teams in the finals, this is an absolute disgrace and has ruined the top 8 as it could effect other teams chances. Just another example of our teams being treated unfairly by these umpires none of which are South Australian even though this is meant to be a national competition? Totally gutted for the team what a comeback but you will make top 8 next year as you have shown a lot of improvement. Shame on you AFL, least you can do now is compensate the club?
