Go to Disneyland or Vegas for three days once a year. Budget 30k. Earn airline miles. If you can't live on 300K a year what are you doing? Then buy a car or two Toyota's or Honda's his and hers. Investment property. When Thad is paid off earning profit use some profit to buy a ranch in south America. No big government running your life. You can work for yourself, paint build bird houses. @ I think one should separate gambling and investing. When gambling the odds are usually against you and in the long run you will normally lose. When investing prudently you get a regular pay off (dividend, coupon, rent…) and you own part of the company’s real book value (equity). In the long run, you have good chance of increasing your wealth. Speculation is probably closer to gambling than investing, as you are betting on the movement of a price with little regard to the value of the underlying asset.
Its interesting to see and hear Goodman in this scene. He gives mark EVERY CHANCE to get out. He wants to understand and he wants to help him. But he also recognizes addiction and knows that he can't be gentle about it. Especially after hearing how deep he was in for. I think that's what makes his last scene in the movie so poignant. Offers free money, a free ride because he is a man of principle, and still gets turned down. He's like a proud parent that see's their child actually learn a life lesson.

Most you can find at any bank tends to be at maybe 4.5 to 5% if you're lucky. Holding dollars these days is like holding ice cubes. Now, if you go overseas with that amount, you can do this like a king.

Goodman saying don't drink is Ironic because he is drinking in real life in this scene. He has also been a very big alcohol use disorder patient, but it's different for everyone as far as degree of it. He's honest about his drinking and the problems it caused, but his still rich and a great actor, there are millions of highly functioning they might deal with physical or mental trauma and have relationship issues in general, But I would prefer a friend that drinks Almost daily to than one that was 100% non-drinkers. I honestly do not trust a person that will not drink unless it's a religious issue. Yes, I have a few Muslim coworkers and friends that do not drink but I also have Muslim friends that do drink and smoke both kinds. I prefer the company of those like my thousands of year-old ancestors understood fermentation and tapped it not only a clean water source but also make the dirty water clean by using the exudate of yeasts to purify said water with ethanol, and in the meantime provide a very good portions of a working man's calories. Like Winston Churchill who also drank pretty long and daily from son rise to sunset did imbibe a lot, but he still was able to perform at a high functional level like Goodman is here. John Goodman has generally been a shit actor all his career. Overhyping his parts, looking like he's genuinely going to have a heart attack, but he is very good in this role. Numbers of actors are like this, they have to reach an older age before they mellow their acting to a believable standard, more natural acting that comes with mature life experience, and ironically a confident, quiet "fuck you" attitude he portrays here!
John Goodman is just ridiculously good in this movie. He projects fear with an ease that is amazing. No screaming, no obvious physical threat.

While I agree with the comments that this is a great dialogue for someone graduating from high school to hear, I must also say that as I am at the end of my working career, and have successfully saved, invested and planned for my retirement, I feel that I am now, at this point of my professional career, also in a position of F#@k You, and must say that it feels great!!!! So good advice for any stage of life...

John Goodman has generally been a shit actor all his career. Overhyping his parts, looking like he's genuinely going to have a heart attack, but he is very good in this role.
Numbers of actors are like this, they have to reach an older age before they mellow their acting to a believable standard, more natural acting that comes with mature life experience, and ironically a confident, quiet "fuck you" attitude he portrays here!
