THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY 4K REVIEW - BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

  • Review of the 4K box set of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. Exceptional image quality on all three with The Dark Knight Rises being the pick of the bunch owing to about a third of the film being shot on 15/70mm IMAX and included in this as a slightly cropped 1.78:1 image as opposed to the anamorphic 35mm (and some VistaVision) for the rest of the film which is 2.40:1. The Dark Knight also has some IMAX scenes and done in the same format. Batman Begins was all shot in anamorphic 35mm with some Super 35, presumably for special effects shots that were then completed in a computer. Sound on all three films is remarkable and is DTS-HD 5.1. In all three cases, the 4K discs are perceptibly superior to the Blu-ray discs in this pack with the stand out feature being HDR again. This review includes an update to my review of Tim Burton's 1989 Batman and in particular the 35mm teaser trailer which has been to a lab for a 4K scan.

    Appreciate this review👏 I went to see The Dark Knight at the IMAX in Waterloo when it first came out and it was breathtaking. It was also the only movie I’ve been to where the audience gave a standing ovation at the end, which was quite something. The IMAX experience was extraordinary and this 4K disc and audio is as close as we will ever get to that. The audio mix in the 4K disc is wonderful and I cannot fault the image quality

    They're such a solid trilogy & their transfers to 4K are equally as solid. My order of preference are in their release order - The first was a game changer in the Superhero genre that unfortunately turned into what Marvel is today, but it makes this Batman saga more special imo.

      It's also the processing time of producing the cartoon parts in 4K. It takes four times as long apparently and that would undoubtedly have ramifications on the scheduled release dates. But as for the special effects in these three Dark Knight films, that's the way to do it! Practical effects that are then drawn over in the computer afterwards. I believe there used to be a genuine IMAX in Glasgow but they gave up on the format thinking the low quality 4K video projector would be an upgrade. I think there were two others in Britain that made the same mistake but apparently there are plans to re-open Bradford with genuine IMAX shortly. The BFI IMAX are going to get the only 15/70 print in the UK for the DUNE Sequel but that won't look quite as good as a genuine 15/70 film as this one was shot entirely on 4K video so the print is a blow-up from that. It should give a more natural presentation than any cinema that video projects it though.

      I'm glad you like the little plug for your channel Clark. Murder on the Orient Express is a bit like Apocalypse Now in that it's not really a film that a younger audience is likely to fully appreciate but if the image quality is anywhere near as good on your system as it is on mine then you won't care if you don't particularly like the film because it's simply a marvel to look at. The cast is unparalleled, an acting masterclass and a classic Agatha Christie story in a confined environment in which you get to know who all the characters are. The follow up 'Death on the Nile' is out here in October and there are going to be 70mm prints so I'll be heading to London. If you can find a cinema that is going to screen it in 70mm it could be a good bit of research for you to see what you think of the best film format. If you can get into the projection booth too then you'll be in for a real treat so never be embarrassed to ask if you can go and see the film projection equipment at work. Some cinemas are pleased that people are interested so it is possible to get into there on occasion, particularly if the projectionist appreciates the attention.
      Black Magic Design Davinci Resolve is full of things that can catch you out so it might mean some disappointments and occasions when you have to start all over again but the results can be as good as anything you'll ever see. The main thing to beware of is that you need a super computer to run the latest version and the second thing to beware of is that you must set the correct frame rate before you start editing because it can't be changed after you start and if you do get it wrong the end product will have image stagger due to frames being dropped. In other words, shoot in NTSC at 23.97 frames per second (or PAL at 25fps or NTSC at 29.97fps) and ensure the Davinci Resolve file is set to the same frame rate before doing anything. John.

I cant wait to review orient express on 4K and then eventually death of a nile compared to the 70mm screening (although comparing 70mm screenings to a 4K disc is like comparing a pinch of dirt to a fancy car). I have already suffered the consequences of not having the right frame rate on davinci resolve haha, had to delete a lot of work but it was all fun. the next time there is a 70mm screening at my local film theatre I will definitely ask if I could see the projectionist booth, its a dream job of mine to be a projectionist and I am currently in the search for a 35mm projector. @moviecollector5920  3 роки тому +2

      @@michaelhawkins7389 Well I'm a lot older than you Michael but I pretty much gave up on cinema in the early 2000s. 35mm print quality had taken a bit of a hit towards the end of the 90s and then that deterioration continued until video projection was foisted on the premiere theatres to help convince an unsuspecting public that 'digital' was superior. It was a terrible time for cinema and it wasn't helped by all the low quality computer effects being added to films. I tend to only go to the cinema now when I can get to one of the few real IMAX cinemas and I know they're screening a real [reeel] film but video projection has improved vastly since those bad times. 'Death on the Nile' is getting a 70mm release in October though so I'll be able to go back to one of the premiere cinemas in Leicester Square when that one's out. John.

      Yes, I think I'd better give it a while longer before I finally look at Batman vs. Superman. I didn't like Man of Steel but I can see why it was made the way it was and it's great that people are making films for youngsters like that. Unfortunately, my preference is for the original comic style and films where you can see what is actually happening: that's not meant to be a criticism but I stopped playing computer games 30 years ago and Man of Steel was so fast it looked to me like it was aimed at gamers. If that film and his later films get youngsters into cinemas I'm all for it. John.

I know we can tend to get a bit obsessive over having the latest thing but I tend to watch anything on our television screen with just a stereo amplifier driving a pair of speakers we've had for over 25 years and they still sound perfect. I have loads of JBL Control 1G speakers on other systems and they are tiny so a pair of those and a stereo amplifier would only cost about £150 in total. Then again, you might already have something better than that so just ignore me!

      Good morning Stephen. It seems that there's roughly an even split between all three films with regards to which we think is the best. But it seems some people were turned off the third film because of a critic who detailed all the plot holes which proliferate throughout all three films. The Dark Knight was an obsession of mine in the summer 2008. I went to an IMAX preview about 6 months earlier which contained the heist sequence and it blew my mind. Once I watched the film in it’s entirety, I couldn’t believe a performance could be given as good as Heath Ledger’s Joker - and I went to see a further 8 or 9 times - and probably around 4 times on imax at Printworks, Manchester... It captured my imagination and it also felt like I was watching Micheal Mann’s Heat... just absolutely incredible trilogy overall. Insanely high level filmmaking. I've watched these in an odd order. Begins was one of my favorite movies growing up, and I would always rent it for the second disc it had with the amazingly extensive special features.
    After that I saw Rises, not in the cinema, but a year later on home video. I didn't get a lot of the continuity stuff. I think the reason why I hadn't seen TDK yet was I didn't have the balls to bring it home where my parents might find it. That was true in 2008, but in 2013, I figured they'd seen me watch weirder things, so I bought and watched the dark knight.
    The Dark Knight still feels like the odd one out for me, as Begins and Rises share a lot of plot points. I think what would have tied the three together better would have been having the joker character carry on in the third. I think not recasting was a mistake that really hurt the trilogy overall.
    Overall, they're all excellent movies, though the styles don't really mesh between the three. The writing is very similar among them, but from one to two to three there's quite a bit of whiplash.

Maybe it was the introduction of the evil Joker character that meant the overall feeling in the second film was somewhat different. The opening with the bank robbery looked fabulous thanks to 15/70 IMAX but wasn't a great introduction to Gotham City as far as I was concerned. It looked like any American city today but I wanted a look similar to Tim Burton's Gotham City so that was a bit of a downer to start with... just my opinion of course and most will disagree with me. Hello John, hope your having a great day. I am commenting to inform you that I have purchased a super 8 projector, I have been searching for around a week and found a good one that works properly and has no problems with it. the model is a Chinon Sound 6100 Super 8mm Film Projector, its an auto thread which is helpful for my small knowledge haha. I do not currently own any super 8 films but I am keeping my eyes open on ebay for a good super 8 gem, like I said I saw the first couple reels of the exorcist and the other day I saw a original 1989 batman trailer on super 8. they both sold out in the first 3 days, so now that I have the main asset to project the film, all I need is an actual film. Chinon produced some really good Super 8 projectors. I have an SS1200 but I used it to death and although it still runs there are one or two issues with it so it's not one I use any longer except for the odd bit of nostalgia.
      Shame you didn't get that Batman trailer because I think that is the Derann Film Services print and that is where I got my 35mm Batman trailer of identical content from. It is therefore highly likely that my 35mm trailer was the master for the Super 8 release and I just happened to be there and spot it on the day they sold it off.... for £2.
      All Super 8 projectors are auto thread as far as I know. I've not seen one that isn't anyway. They have to be really because it's such a small gauge and would be a bit fiddly to manually thread up. Having said that, I have a standard 8mm projector that has to be threaded manually and it's all set up rather easily.
      Thanks to your input I think I've worked out the ending of The Shining so I might do a 'spoiler alert' at the end of the video and advise people to turn off now if they don't want to know before I discuss my/our interpretation of the ending.

      @@moviecollector5920 Personally, I blame The Empire Strikes Back for that. The twist of "What??? He's his father???" was so powerful, that filmmakers have been chasing that high ever since.
      It also creates a shorthand for storytellers to create emotional investment in a character in the audience. "Remember that character you know and love? Well this person is the CHILD! So now you care about them more." It instantly adds background and history and explanation for the motivations of the character without having to do the work of building it from scratch. It's a bit of a cheap move because of it's prevalence, but I guess it is a go-to trope for a reason.

      I watched some of your livestream with Keith last night Jason. I would have watched more but it was time for beddybies. Always entertaining and I must make the time to watch more of your videos. If you do get the Dark Knight films in 4K why not do a review and I'll point people to it.
      By the way, I saw when you said you were using sound out of your television and I realize funds aren't easy to come by but you don't have to spend a fortune on a good surround sound system these days. A stereo setup can work wonders but if you save up and get a fairly basic home cinema sound amplifier you can add speakers over a period of time. Richer sounds tend to start the amps at about £100 and speakers about £50 a pair.
      Tonight I expect we'll be watching one of the Jurassic World films which I don't expect much of but I got a double disc pack of both the films in 4K for £8.95 so I don't think I'll be too disappointed.

      It's been interesting to receive all the comments on this video William because I thought I'd get a lot of upset replies about stating my opinion that The Dark Knight was in third place but the opposite has been true (so far!) and many feel that The Dark Knight Rises is the best film with Batman Begins at number 2. I didn't really know Heath Ledger and did not see The Dark Knight at the cinema so perhaps I wasn't influenced by all the sudden media reports about his performance as the Joker immediately following his death. If I'd have been younger and had ventured to a cinema perhaps I'd have been more receptive to how good this film is but time had moved on and I was watching all three for the first time together and they had a different impression on my as a result. I expect I'll enjoy The Dark Knight more than I did the next time I see it and similarly perhaps you'll find you enjoy the other two films even more than you did the first time around.

    I totally agree on the quality of these 4K disc's and of the stellar performances throughout. I would make one quibble, and that is that the Dark Knight Trilogy FAR exceed the Tim Burton films in every appreciable standard. I would really like to point out the differences in the performances of the Joker, as I find Nicholson's cartoonish portrayal unwatchable after watching Heath Ledger absolutely inhabit the role! Good movies all, but in my humble opinion, Nolan raised the bar to an unreachable height for any director to match regarding Batman.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  3 роки тому

      Then again Jim, Jack Nicholson was portraying The Joker as his persona in the comics up to that point. Heath Ledger's portrayal was apparently a later version of The Joker but it was a good move as no one would be able to match Nicholson's performance. I used to find Nicholson's performance over powering too but not any longer. Must be getting old.
      One thing that is certainly better in the 1989 film is the look and portrayal of Gotham City. That and the Batmobile I think. But there is only one good film in that original series and there are three in the Dark Knight series. John.

    Absolutely The Dark Knight Rises is the best of the three - the main problem with it I think are the poorly directed crowd fight scenes (though all of the cops being out of action should have had a better set up too). A lot of comic fans had a hard time with Bruce Wayne becoming a recluse and other behaviour they deemed un-Batmanlike (and disappointed that Bane wasn't as cartoonish as he is in the comic), but they forget that Nolan's Batman was one that, if not exactly grounded in reality, had at least a couple of toes on the ground (what's that? you don't believe a city would accept being locked down for a mere 5 months?). Because the Batman films have become so poor compared to the 1989 film, I stayed away from these as I expected they'd be more of the same. But how wrong I was. However, I think I enjoyed them more now than I would have done if I'd have seen them upon release. Time is a healer and I wasn't ready for Batman remakes when Batman Begins came out. I had the same problem with Spider-Man but I did watch one of the remakes recently and thought it was terrible. The more recent 'Homecoming' is better but it's not Spider-Man as far as I'm concerned. I ran the film yesterday and I need to check the disc on my other player as about 40 minutes in the image started to break up, the sound shortly after went off and finally the disc froze completely. A bit of a concern given how many 4K discs I've purchased in the past 18 months. I'll probably be a few days before I can record anything or have a review ready so don't wait for me. When I do get one done and up I'll include a link to your own and mention it and how mine came about as a result of you mentioning that you were about to review The Shining. First time I watched it I thought there were too many holes in it and I haven't changed my mind this time. Neither my wife nor I can fathom the ending exactly but perhaps we're not supposed to. My take on it is that Jack is a ghost and he's going through a loop whereby he experiences more or less the same thing over and over again but it still doesn't really make sense. John.

My wife picked up the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in 4k and I was not sure if it would be a good one and I feel like I have seen the movie too many times. Willy Wonka is a very colourful film as I recall. I never liked it but it was made to look mesmerizing to children in cinemas and hence why the HDR discs have worked so well. I haven't seen the 4K disc but I can well imagine what it will look like... although not as good as the Dark Knight films methinks, particularly Dark Knight Rises with all that 70mm IMAX.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  3 роки тому

      Well I do shoot the videos in 4K but there's more to it than compiling the finished product in 4K and slapping it up. The general rule of thumb is that there is no point in uploading a video in 4K unless it has HDR applied. There are exceptions where professional film makers have the best equipment and ensure the best image quality at the end of the process but with me just sitting in front of a camera and talking there really is no point as there would be no discernible difference between 2K and 4K. Where there will be a discernible difference is in the time it takes to upload the same video in 4K because I would have to compile it at a much higher bit rate to preserve the image quality. As it is on my fibre connection this one took about an hour to upload. In 4K it would take around 3 hours.
      The video projector I use is over 3 years old now but if you can find a second hand one that's got low hours then it's worth considering. It's an Optoma UHD550X and it was amazingly good value. I purchased it on the basis of the model that cost twice as much but I soon had this one set up to look even better than the demonstration we had with the more expensive machine. Optoma do offer a sub-£1k projector now and that would be worth looking at if my own is anything to go by. Amazing image quality... if you know how to set one up!!! John.

    My favorite is Dark Knight Rises as well with Batman Begins coming in a close second and The Dark Knight a distant third. Great review of the transfers John! I love The Dark Knight Trilogy and I too enjoy that The Dark Knight Rises the best of the three. I love the Bruce Wayne story throughout the trilogy and I think it ended his story as Batman in the best way possible. It’s nice to see Bruce Wayne be able to get a happy ending for once, not that other iterations where he is Batman until he either dies or has to retire as a result of being Batman just catching up with him and it’s too much for him to keep going are bad, but it’s nice that there’s a definite ending to this trilogy with someone else going to take on the Batman mantle and be a symbol of hope for Gotham. Especially since this trilogy takes a more realistic approach to the character, even though there’s quite a bit of suspension of disbelief that happens throughout the three films. Keep up the great work and have a great day!

      My interpretation of the ending Jared is that it's left up to us to decide. My opinion is that Alfred didn't see Bruce at the cafe and it was in his imagination. Whatever the correct interpretation it made for an excellent ending and left the way open for any future sequels if someone ever comes up with a good excuse... but I hope they don't! John.

    • @Jared_Wignall
      @Jared_Wignall 3 роки тому

      @@moviecollector5920 that’s how various people interpret the ending. I see it as Alfred did see Bruce with Selina and his fantasy is now reality. I’ve got some reasons for why this is, but a big one is theatricality and deception as Batman shoots the buildings and from the cloud of smoke the Bat flies through it and for me, I think he got out and hit the autopilot. One reason for my belief is when we last see Batman in the Bat just before the explosion, we see shadows across his face, indicating he’s in the city. I’ve got a feeling the Bat has a way to get out of it quickly if one had to escape quickly, just as the Tumbler had the Bat-Pod in The Dark Knight. Regardless of the ending, it’s keeping in tune with the other films in having the ending be open ended with Rises being the end of the trilogy, we get to decide what happens. Bruce either got out of the Bat and lived and Alfred saw him or Alfred thought he saw Bruce when it was his imagination. I like how Nolan doesn’t spoon feed the audience and we get to think what happened after the films. I hope they don’t have a fourth film, especially when Nolan thought it would make sense to have three films for Bruce Wayne’s journey as Batman if he got the opportunity to make more after Batman Begins. Thanks for the video!

We moved home last week and I've been trying to get organized to put an update video out showing what will be the new home cinema but it's been hectic and almost impossible to get organized. That just one more little trick I'm going to have to play with to see if I can get away with it! I've been thinking about putting one of these Dark Knight films on to test things out but so far I've managed to resist until the proper screen is in place.
