That was later surpassed by 5 attempts a day in the following years. The insurance industry wrote a letter demanding the world’s navies do something. A western military spokesman said that they can’t be responsible for 6,000 square miles of ocean and that ships had to protect themselves. The insurance companies responded by voiding any policy where the crew was armed - it’s better to pay out a small ransom than for the pirates to view the crew as an obstacle and then have to pay 20 death benefits. The international community later established the IRTC where navy ships could respond to a vessel being attacked (if they felt like responding) - I’m not kidding. When I was home I would tell my friends about the piracy threat. They were shocked to hear and wondered why it wasn’t in the news. I said, because an American ship hasn’t been hit yet. Then in 2009 the Maersk Alabama was attacked and we all began to know about piracy in the 21st century. In 2010 I went through pirate water twice a month and there was at least one mayday every transit, but I had 10 meters of freeboard and could do 23kts. Those poor bastards with 5 meters of freeboard and could only do 13kts were screwed. I once was turning north into the Red Sea when I saw a thousand small skiffs milling about and a German frigate leaving the Red Sea at dusk. I called the frigate and asked, don’t you see all these skiff and that dusk is a time for pirate attacks. The frigate responded that the skiffs appeared to be fishing. The ship I just passed sent out a mayday an hour later and was taken by pirates. It may have gotten better, but it really sucked for us at one time.
@@WorldxTracer That wasn’t an option at the beginning. The original recommendations was to stay 75 miles offshore, then 100, then 200 and then 600 because they started using mother pirate boats. We followed best practices to harden our vessel with fire hoses and nets to deflect being boarded. My advantage was speed and freeboard, until one day we blew a lubricating injector off the #7 cylinder and had to stop just South of Aden Yemen. I notified UKMTO of my situation and doubled my lookouts. We were dead in the water for the hour it took to make the repair and a bit of time to get 70,000 tons back up to speed, all the time looking out for a little boat that could close on us in 20 minutes. We lucked out as it was a mildly rough day at sea so the pirates weren’t around. I was buzzed by a U.S. Navy P3-Orion while the engineers made quick repairs, which made me feel very proud. UKMTO posted that ships with speeds greater than 15kts and freeboard greater than 8 meters hadn’t been boarded, so the low and slow vessels were at greatest risk.

Contractors with guns cost a hell of a lot. And pirate raids are very uncommon statistically. It’s not financially profitable for the shipping giants to take on the additional cost and liability.
A better pirate deterrent would be allowing merchant ships to arm themselves. You know, like has been proven time and time again throughout the entirety of written history. But hey what do I know? I'm just an asshole with half a brain and an inkling of literacy.

How about using the "murder hole" method used in old castles? Find a caustic liquid, or maybe a low-viscosity glue, that can spill out through vents on the sides of the ship. I'd think twice before climbing into a noxious spray of superglue raining down on me.
The main problems with giving the crew weapons: 1. If they fail to stop them from boarding the boat but manage to kill a couple of them, guess what happens to the crew. 2.Flags of convenience, Countries like Panama arent going to give ships sailing under their registration permission to carry weapons because Countries would start blocking ships with Panama registration from entering their ports. Which would ruin the whole "Flags of Convenience" thing for Panama
Not to mention, it would enrage the Somalis even further. Moral and legal complications to follow, considering (whether on what to believe or if its true or not) that these foreign fishing companies are what led to that issue in the first place because no one's patrolling the waters due to the civil war (though that couldn't be the only factor at play here)
Somali piracy is dead, and has been for years. The UN anti privacy action also lowered the pressure from illegal fishing in Somali waters and the fish has actually come back a little, thus fishing is actually an option now for the people with boats. The Houtis are not pirates, they are attacking ships/trade for a political reason. Ie it's a war. A whole other can of worms
They could also get sued, by sacraficing a small ship and letting it get near a large ship and feigning ignorance that the small ship didn't understand the instructions and got to close to it. Because in the end, there is no laws concerning boats getting near each other.

This is why I wouldn't be surprised if we get the return of the Q-ship--a merchant vessel that hides a plethora of machine guns and small-caliber cannons. If the pirates get too close, they're going to get hit by a something like an M242 Bushmaster gun.
I would suggest using extremely powerful IR and UV lasers. This will seriously damage the eyes of any pirate because the lasers would be invisible to them and they would therefore be unaware that they are being blinded until they become blind. Bad luck for the pirates but at least the ship's crew wouldn't have to kill anyone. A powerful narrow beam microwave emitter could also be a viable alternative.
The problem with guns is that many countries won't allow armed merchant ships in their ports. That can be solved by having craft placed at specific points to allow armed guards to embark and disembark outside of territorial waters.
Someone should start a rental service. When you enter pirate infested waters, there's a boat where you can rent a bunch of guns and turn them back in at a second boat when you leave the area at the other side. Sounds like a nice bussiness to me.
All of those things can be used against civilians in the event of a takeover. Ships are also very very slippery so there are far greater chances of accidental friendly fire. Use your brain a little bit and remember that guns are rarely the best solution.

Well, technically they do have a bow. But it's really big. And part of the ship. So impractical by all means (for defense, that is. It's totally practical for keeping your ship afloat though).
Defenders have no bow and arrows but their castle can move and some of them pretty damn fast, a lot of pirate raids fail because the merchant ships can outrun or outlast the small motorboats with limited fuel and no ocean-going capabilities.
i know this isnt about the vid(the security camera part), but for anyone that thinks of putting security cameras on your house, keep this in mind before buying some that are easily visible. a lot of people think of only one part of the camera, like " criminals will see them and think, i shouldnt risk it" other criminals will think "what are they trying to protect?...might be worth robbing" if you get some, dont get any that they can see.
Good video overall, but you're mistaken about the main point: cargo vessels routinely used armed guards when traversing the Gulf of Aden. Depending on the route, they are picked up outside the piracy area and they get off the vessel once it has safely transited or joined a convoy. I know this because I worked in the industry, and we regularly paid companies to provide armed guards expressly for this purpose.
Your comparison of asking teachers to carry firearms is an interesting comparison. In both cases the idea is not to simply arm all teachers or in this case all crew members. The idea is make training available and anyone who has completed training, or who has prior police or military experience can choose to carry a firearm. In addition you would also hire specific security personnel for this purpose and to oversee ongoing training. One reasonably trained sniper would be a hell of a deterrent.
But keeping teachers disarmed has worked out so well in the past! Yeah, how dare you bring logic into what is clearly supposed to be an emotional discussion.
Years ago, Captain Sarah’s ship was nearly attacked, but instead of weapons, she used smart tactics and quick thinking to outmaneuver the pirates, saving her crew and cargo without firing a single shot.
Haven't watched the video yet but a lot of ships do carry guns. But only at sea. Before making port they offload the firepower to a second vessel offshore.
They don't. They carry armed guards who embark and disembark in international waters. No shipping company is going to give out guns to their slave wage crews.
I believe the teachers being able to carry guns is an optional legal stance. Not mandatory. They can if they are able and want to. Not made to. Similar to the crew, the legality of having one is what they want to solve. More like if the crew wanted to they could, the multiple countries makes it tougher.
A reminder that somalian piracy became an issue because large multinationals overfished somalian waters so much that locals who subsisted from fishing lost their livelyhood causing many to turn to piracy as they already had boats and there was no longer an opportunity to earm through fishing
Ah yes, it is completely and entirely the fishing companies fault that these people immediately turned to murder, theft and piracy instead of doing literally ANYTHING else. What an apologist. If I lose my job because of stockholder interference, can I just go and commit crimes and it becomes the stockholders fault? Youre such a loser.
some private security operate by waiting outside of port in international waters with a chase boat or tender sized vessel that can be winched on board and gets picked up by the ship. then when they arrive at one of the destination ports, they take all weapons with them and go onto the boat and sits in international water while the ship goes in to port, then the ship would pick them up again on the way out. that way the weapons never enter sovereign borders. Also for one way journeys or if the ship only hired for part of their route, once nearing the last port the security guards would just chuck the weapons overboard into the ocean just before entering sovereign waters, ride the ship into port and take a flight back home. cost of the weapons would be built into the fees.
I think you missed the point on allowing crew members to have firearms. Allowing is not forcing, options are usually preferred. In your teacher analogy, I know several teachers including several in my family that would gladly carry firearms at school if allowed. You are correct in forcing people to do something they don't want to do usually doesn't work out well, but forcing is a far cry from allowing.
Do you know the story of USS Dwight D Eisenhower vs Greenpeace? Palma, Spain 1988. Greenpeace wished to protest their "dislike" of nuclear power and weapons by graffiti tagging Ike's hull. Needless to say, the crew could not allow that. After all, the deck apes would have to spend a lot of time hanging over the side to clean it up. So, 2.5" fire hoses were rigged as water cannons, with M2 machine guns as back up, of course. Swamped Greenpeace's little zodiac boats and flooded their engines. They had to row back to shore. Ike remained graffiti free.
Some large grit/sand blasting media added to the high pressure water might be interesting. Or a slick lubricant that could be sprayed on the deck. Also, I imagine the ship's engine/alternator can generate an awful lot of current, something that might arc to hand held metallic object. I can at least see a fun ship defense game/simulator in there somewhere 😂
As much as that sounds effective unfortunately for other reasons it's not very practical, putting in abrasive grit into the water cannons will increase wear on the ships protective coatings leading to more maintenance, slimy grease on the decks can be time-consuming too clean up after the pirates are gone and can potentially create environmental issues if it finds its way into the ocean, and energizing parts of the ship or the water around the ship with stray currents from the main generators can be a safety hazard to the crew, lead to more electrical issues as well as increase the rate at which below the water line components corrode, you don't want your prop shafts or your through-hole fittings corroding. And replacing those below the water line components usually requires putting the ship into dry dock
@@coolsnake1134 No doubt they all come with challenges! At a point it'll come down to return on investment - is it cheaper than what they're going to be spending on piracy issues and insurance 🤷
It would probably be cheaper if they just sprayed 1$ bills at them it would be impractical for the pirates to pass up the money they would have to stop and collect the dollars and could only carry a few hundred dollars before the wet dollars became too heavy
Of course, the irony in all of this is that none of these measures are as effective as a relatively small detail in possession of an assortment of small arms.

I hear a lot of dumb and expensive ideas here. Far easier to overcome what ever road blocks and have the ship's crew armed with the same stuff as pirates for a fraction of the cost. Instead of $millions to install pumps and spray nozzles all over a ship. A couple of M67 frag grenade , tied to a 3/8 nylon rope so it stays 10,12 ft above the water and explode there will discourage boarding, and unhealthy for the people on the boats near the ship, while the crew can throw it under cover. Ship's crew can also have RPG-7, and grenade launchers (the ones with grenades on belts like a machine gun) and up to 50 cals, so they can shoot back. If pirates see you have RPG-7, they keep out of range, which is good for tankers. Frag grenades will not harm a ship , with inch thick steel sides. RPG also works great on helicopters trying to land on the deck.
International laws regarding firearms, as mentioned in the video, keeps that from being a possibility. There was another comment regarding training and costs, not sure if it went through, doesn't look like it.
I think it's pretty different from trying to arm teacher's. The problem with the teacher thing, is a few things. First, not all teacher's are mentally stable enough to be trusted with a Firearm and we know that the measure's put in place in the US aren't enough to keep people who shouldn't have a firearm from getting one, as a case in Colorado Springs 2022 a person on an FBI watchlist who was known to be mentally unstable, obtained a firearm and proceeded to attack a grocery store. So, testing teacher's to be mentally stable, isn't possible(In the US). Second, it's hard to store them safely. Kid's could gain access to them and so they'd need to be kept extremely safe, so safe you might argue that it's pointless to have them because getting to them in an emergency would be to hard. You can't keep them on your person because there are hundreds of cases of students attempting to steal firearms from armed security on campus's. So, that's a no go. Then there's the fact that Teacher's would need to be properly trained to fire them along with also being able to act in a terrifying situation when they've already had training through teaching to use their words to solve conflicts instead. The FACTS are that, and as much as anyone who reads this would say otherwise or say that they'd be able to do it, when put in the situation to have to defend yourself or other's and to have to kill another person, even when given the means to do so. The majority of people simply aren't capable, hell the most recent shootings in Texas, if anything, proved that no matter how much people say they'd stand up and fight, they won't. Your body will fall to it's lowest form of training and experience when faced with Danger. If you don't have the experience, you won't be protecting anyone. This is without taking into account, teacher's don't get paid enough to put their lives on the line. International Water's and Sailing are about as far as you can get away from help in the modern day, I'd say there's definitely an argument to arm Cargo Ship Worker's, whereas with Teacher's there's not. BUT being able to hire security and such in both cases is a good alternative safety measure. TLDR: The teacher thing is a bit more complex both Politically and Safety wise IMO.
Lol yet for some reason nearly 30 states allow teachers, in some capacity, to carry weapons. Honestly, I'd be more scared thinking about some of these old ladies, that I had as teachers, running around with guns than I would be thinking about being in a mass shooting.
They are not forced to carry. Also, just the fact alone that a school is not a gun free zone and that a teacher might be armed would have the potential to ward off anyone thinking they are going to go into a gun free zone and have a free for all until law enforcement shows up 15 minutes later to stop them. Are we looking for a perfect solution?
Many large cargo ships have some kind of a secret panic room (that might look like a normal container) there the crew can hide in case boarding of the ship could not be avoided.
Looks like a normal container? Ah now THAT should work! previously i thought it a dumb idea, but "security through obscurity" - esp on a ship with hundreds n thousands of containers...!
I think part of the issue is just the cost of having personnel trained in using firearms vs how frequently they actually need to use firearms. Somebody who does not train regularly will not be effective in a small arms firefight, it doesn't matter what gun you give them. Now, maybe with heavy machine guns you can start to offset lack of training with sheer rate of fire, but the downside to using that approach is that you need a large stockpile of ammo to make use of it. For instance, the Browning M2 consumes 7.5 rounds a second at minimum. So, if a cargo ship were to use that strategy, they'd need to purchase a lot of ammo (and make sure it's all reliable), find some secure but readily accessible place on board to store it, train crew members on how to handle and properly store all that ammo, train crew members on how to operate an HMG, and make sure that the ammo in the stockpile remains reliable. No matter how you slice it, equipping the crew on the ship with weapons (including ones mounted on the ship) is a massive cost in training and logistics (and that's not even gonna be the entire cost). Hiring dedicated armed security personnel is likely the better option, but that's also going to be quite expensive, possibly even more expensive depending on how many security personnel there are going to be. Now, maybe all of these costs would be justified if piracy was an everyday occurrence, but it really isn't. It's only a problem in certain areas. The better option is to just contract a external PMC or armed security company to defend the ship while its in pirate-infested waters, which shipping companies do actually do fairly regularly.
@@williamstandish2926Most people are idiots at at least one thing. You're only really an idiot if you argue that you are right despite convincing evidence otherwise. @@lorscarbonferrite6964 Most police in the US never use their firearm. Ever. Yet they are trained on how to use them. Lets talk about costs. They avoid the highly pirated water by going around Africa. For a round trip this increases fuel by $1 million alone. What was a little over a month 1 way trip, just increased by an extra month. Cargo ships normally take 4 round trips between SE Asia and Europe. To go around Africa, they would be lucky to do 3 trips. So they make less trips, and each trip costs a lot more. Now, you are saying it will cost the shipping companies more to go the extra distance, while shipping a lot less, than to spend a hundred thousand to arm the ships?
I would say probably their best defense would be a ships speed. The ship should be equipped with a propulsion configuration that allows them to increase their speed enough to outrun the typical craft pirates employ even if only for short bursts.

How about using the "murder hole" method used in old castles? Find a caustic liquid, or maybe a low-viscosity glue, that can spill out through vents on the sides of the ship. I'd think twice before climbing into a noxious spray of superglue raining down on me.
The main problems with giving the crew weapons:

It can be solved by cutting off trade until they agree to allow armed merchant ships.

Well, technically they do have a bow. But it's really big. And part of the ship. So impractical by all means (for defense, that is. It's totally practical for keeping your ship afloat though).
Castles were usually sieged without combat, people don't want to starve to death.

Or maybe, have onboard guards, like security guards in schools.
Some do, and the footage is just fantastic to watch.

@@medievalwebman2917 Why not, it’s simply self defense, no one forces them to try come on board.
some private security operate by waiting outside of port in international waters with a chase boat or tender sized vessel that can be winched on board and gets picked up by the ship. then when they arrive at one of the destination ports, they take all weapons with them and go onto the boat and sits in international water while the ship goes in to port, then the ship would pick them up again on the way out. that way the weapons never enter sovereign borders.

11:10 Clearly these pirates were NOT the smartest individuals in their village.
The only Money spent goes to Barbed Wire. The Nozzles are Fire Hoses that are on Board anyway, and the Pumps are the Firefighting/Deckwash System.
Imagine calling 911 from the middle of the ocean when you see pirates lol
Many large cargo ships have some kind of a secret panic room (that might look like a normal container) there the crew can hide in case boarding of the ship could not be avoided.
Looks like a normal container? Ah now THAT should work! previously i thought it a dumb idea, but "security through obscurity" - esp on a ship with hundreds n thousands of containers...!
They mentioned this. To call a mayday and then hide, since pirates generally can't operate the ship
Maybe if these ships were allowed to have 6-10 mounted .50 Caliber Barrett rifles these pirates might stop their attacks altogether.. ???
Would you allow random ships from anywhere in the world to come into your country's ports with that weaponry?
You think that's a lot of weaponry? Then again, most people are idiots.
For example, my knowledge of firearms and vehicles is absolutely abysmal, but I admit that and avoid discussions of these subjects whenever possible.

Imagine a world where the attacker has more rights than the defendant.. oh wait you dont.
5:54 it isnt an Israeli owned ship, one of the shareholders is Israeli. and you didnt mention either that none of the crew were Israeli and are still kidnapped
I guess this is why the pirates keep winning. How about they get some guns?
Imagine when the pirates shot at the navy ship it just turned its giant cannon towards their boats
I believe the insurance companies that insure those ships and cargo don't like them having armed personal either.
Some of the insurance companies only care about the cargo and vessel and really aren't concerned with the loss of replaceable crew.
Well, if they would be armed they would be more likely to get injured or die either by accident or in combat and who is going to pay for that?
@@946towguy2 that doesn't make sense. They have to pay out life insurance to the sailors' families
@@IlIlllIIIllIIlIIlII Many sailors have to buy their own life insurance and pay the premiums.

Why not just carry armed soldiers like airplanes in USA do?
I was following the comparison to housr security and then I remembered you can have guns in the house for protection.
Why not in cargo ships too?
If this piracy is such a big deal can we not just implement DRM into the ships?
DRM doesn't and hasn't ever worked. Piracy reigns supreme!
They can pull a capcom and implement DRM 10 years after the piracy took place.
Make it online-only.

Ok, I know I am going off topic but here is a story. I bought a game once (actually 3 copies) that was online only, my friends and I played it religiously every weekend posting clips to youtube and having a blast! Then one day they just shut off the servers. $300 gone, no offline mode.
No wonder they are so vulnerable using pos defense
The best defense is clearly the most silly and complicated one
The American Military Indusial complex way !!

Hey we don't talk about the XM8 like that, H&K tried.
Thats hard to be a pirate in 2023 year
interesting
It sounds like everyone feels the crew is pretty expendable until it costs them too much money.
that is the unfortunate world we live in
Ship Crews being abandoned by the Owners is a fairly common Thing. There are numerous Cases of Crews having to survive without Food and Fuel (meaning no Power and Water) for Months, sometimes even Years, when the Owners got into Financial Problems.
Why does protection of the world’s sea-faring cargo end up on the shoulders of the US and UK navies. Are there no other countries in the world who depend on importing/exporting said cargo who have the resources or resolve to contribute to keeping shipping lanes safe?
I watched a TV show following a Norwegian frigate patrolling around Somalia a while back.
Not as intensely and continuously, no.
The EU has recently decided to master a naval mission to protect merchant ships, I guess their decision making process simply is a bit slower. But youre right, some non western countries seem to think its easier to leave all the dirty work to western navies, complaining about "western imperialism" or some bullshit like that instead.
Becuase the US and UK are the only ones dumb enough to protect ships not flagged in their countries. France is there, but only running convoys for the French flagged merchant ships.
And don't conflate the present situation with the old UN mission to protect shipping from Somali pirates. Then everyone was there, Norway as said, neutral Sweden even.

Within a minute I already liked. This is hilarious. Who would ever think that security for such a vessel would even be needed? Like who is that crazy? Oh. Right. Pirates. In this day. Wild.
How do you even have balls to go to a ship knowing that any time, 2-3 US Navy ships will show up and there is already shit tons of water spraying at the side of the ship
Is this a joke? Five people took over a huge ship. That's an insane accomplishment, and it's definitely motivation for others to try to do the same.
@@dahat1992 Cargo ships look big, but don't they have like 20 people crew? Once they get on board, doesn't look that hard for 5 career criminals with AKs to control unarmed crew that probably don't want to play heroes with their wrenches and get shot.
They don't, that's why piracy went down again.
@@Sicarius888 What's your point? Sounds like you agree with me.
@@dahat1992 I don't agree attacking a cargo ship is an accomplishment, it is a criminal act of theft and terrorism against unarmed civilians. Accomplishment would be to build a functional nation, not a lawless, unstable rogue state anarchy with powerless governments and civil wars. Or at least rob a navy cruiser, a fair fight against people who can and know how to fight back.
Bandits just like those currently romanticised vikings and age of sail pirates. Rob and terrorize defenceless workers, run away from real military.
So the pirates, the ones that will not hesitate one second to take your life get to live another day. Got it.
Fire & bullets would definitely work though right?

Idk about the water tactics it’s a little more discouraging to tell back at home that you got sawed into 2 pieces by a m242 instead of “hey at my last raid I got a little wet but next time I’ll bring a umbrella”
