    Katy Trail looks like one of the nicest rail trails I've seen. I'd really like to bicycle it someday.

    The blue flowers are Tall Campanula (bellflower) and the other blue flowers at 10:01 are bachelor's buttons also known as wild chicory.

    What was tater making when you were complaining about how the bench was made in Missouri? Looked like a tortilla with peperoni and string cheese. Maybe slide in a trail recipe every now and then. Would like to see what you cat's make for dinners and stuff. Love the content, keep up the great work.

      Yea. Tortillas, pepperoni , and string cheese. The latter is the only kind of cheese we can really carry when it’s this hot. At this point most of our trail food is just dictated by what I haven’t burned out on over the last x years. Dinners are mostly the rice and beans thing from our website or else something like a knorr or mashed potato.

    I found out my city’s water around here gets a large portion of our water from deep limestone wells, hence the sulfur. Apparently our water is as hard as they’re allowed to have it according to regulations. I need to get a water softener installed for my house, and I do drink water from a filter.
    Also the missouri has rock wing dans but the water is high. Also the missouri is way less safe for swimming and recreational boating because of the undertow. Growing up here we would swim and tube on the Mississippi.

    One possibility for your achy legs is electrolyte insufficiency, especially considering the heat and larger quantities of water you're consuming. Maybe switching to drink packets with electrolytes would be an option for you? Some of them can be pretty pricey. You could also add a daily vitamin, but that's one more thing to carry (not a lot of weight if you ditch the packaging tho). Just a thought!

    I think my last post on this got flagged and nixed for some reason, but there is a cool iPhone app for figuring out what plants you are seeing. It’s called picture this. If you get it and then close out of the various upgrades for a cost, you can use it, take photos and learn what plants and flowers you are seeing the next time you get to town and have WiFi

      If you take a picture of a flower on an IPhone then below the picture is a little i in a circle. You click on it and it will identify the flower. No need for an app. I also like the free Merlin app that will identify bird sounds

    I have found that to remove sulfur smells from water, boiling it for a minute or two or adding chlorine dioxide water treatment pills or drops are highly effective. Products like the Katadyn MicroPur MP1 tablets or the Aquamira or Pristine drops (the two part kits) work very well. Straight chlorine, such as bleach or the Pristine 30 min pills can also be used but are not as effective and can leave an aftertaste.

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  2 місяці тому

      Interesting. I’ve usually found the chlorine pills to be more of a negative than a positive since they come with their own chemical taste. Especially if you don’t dilute them enough

    • @marclaliberte5491
      @marclaliberte5491 2 місяці тому

      @@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes I agree on the taste that chlorine leaves in the water, especially if the water is loaded with organics (like a cow pond or bog water). This is why I wrote that chlorine dioxide works better. Chlorine and chlorine dioxide are different chemicals that don't work in the same way. The two part drops and the MicroPur MP1 tablets both work well but for whatever reason the MicroPur MP1 is more difficult to find in the US than in Europe or Canada, while the two part kits are easy to find but in my opinion less convenient.

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  2 місяці тому

      @marclaliberte5491 I have fairly extensively experience with the Katadyn tabs and aquamuira over the years before switching to mechanicals filtration. Most water sources I use tend to be on the better side so the chemical taint was a noticeable downgrade. There are the occasional epically bad ones though

    • @marclaliberte5491
      @marclaliberte5491 2 місяці тому

      @@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes I always use a filter first, and then use the chlorine dioxide pills or drops only if the water is real bad. I much prefer this to adding some sugary crystals to cover the taste, but that's me. I simply filter, add the chlorine dioxide, wait 15 to 30 min depending on water temperature and the smell is gone. Remember that I'm not removing bacteria (that's the filter's job), just the sulfides, so I don't need to wait for hours.

    How many pairs of shoes will you normally go through on your countrywide hike? I believe y’all ran across a green grass snake

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  2 місяці тому

      Depends on the shoe. Currently with the new balances I am getting about 400 miles out of each pair. I have had Altra issues before where I was only getting 250. So as you can imagine it is a major expense. I also have somewhat problematic feet though, so my options are very limited.

    did you find out what the blue flowers were? I looked up what I could came up with native of missouri blue sage something like that. were those birds egrets? nice they helped you out I would never do that because one I cant afford it, another is trust, I dont trust strangers. heard to many horror stories of people helping others out (not just hikers but homeless etc). no I have to err on the side of caution, so hopfully hikers and bikers will understand.

    I suspect your tired legs may be because you are on a Rail Trail. The ol' loco's didn't like inclines so you only use the same muscles for 25+ miles every day. Even roads usually have a few ups and downs to use slightly diff' muscle groups? you could walk forwards backward for a bit every hour. I might not help but it would make for funny UA-cam content? ;-)
