  • This is the third in a series of video tutorials entitled "Standards for Jazz Guitar" in which I first teach you the single note melody and then show you how I harmonize each note and come up with a chord melody arrangement for a given standard. And for this lesson I've selected "Speak Low" written by Kurt Weill. Unlike the last 2 lessons which featured jazz standards over the short 12 and 16 measure forms, this one is a 32 measure one, so a lot of harmonic territory to cover here!

As much as I wanted to watch the lesson, I didn't want the song to end. Beautiful playing! True artist at work!

Speak Low. Don't wake the roommate... Boz Skaggs Speak Low album is perfection. Holds the mood throughout with extremely intuitive playing from his backup band, ala Abbey Lincoln's Wholly Earth recording. Huge favorites of mine.

Of course you can. The two styles of strings have a different sound to discriminating ears. Rounds have more "bite". The physical way you play, the music you play and how you learn to approach jazz music, is FAR more important.

Waldo W, i think jazz guitarists used phosphor bronze strings on their archtops before pickups were added

I’m intending to switch to flatwounds sooner rather than later due to how I play, but technique is significantly more important than string type, or pickups, or wood type, or how nice the guitar is. Focus on what you have and master it. Eventually it won’t matter what you are playing on

    Recurring, not "reoccuring."

    "Titled," not "entitled".
