I absolutely adore that series 😍 it was just so moving and the world building - so incredibly rich and detailed. I *have* to reread it now. Marcus, have you read Jemisen’s The Inheritance trilogy? It is so astonishingly different from The Broken Earth, but just as incredible IMO.
Right on Elizabeth ! As alway, thank you for using your voice to stand up for and with so many people, issues and animals! I know it’s so much easier to just focus on book reviews and BuJos. One of the reasons I subscribed to your channel was when you stood up some followers’ negative comments about an issue. You where so cool and collected and clearly stated your position and made it clear that we are staying on the respectful side of this line. As you say “French chef kiss” also, great reviews 🥰
I’ve just ordered the Broken Earth Trilogy box set based on your recommendation. I love reading fantasy so I hope I enjoy them as much as you clearly did. Thank you for your honesty xx
I've watched many booktubers, but I think you have a way of talking about books and opening discussions that I haven't seen before, and it's very refreshing. I saw a comment that said something like 'I could listen to you talk about books for hours', and yes, totally. you not only have a very pleasant way of speaking in general, but I find your reviews very honest and insightful! I love these book-related videos on your channel and I'm so glad you're in this part of youtube now ☺️
It makes me so happy hearing other people gush about Winter's Orbit! It's such a great book. And yes, The Broken Earth trilogy is absolutely brilliant. I'm planning to do a reread/readalong this fall because I have really been wanting to revisit it.
I saw your review before I started and had a feeling I’d love it, too! It was so well balanced ❤️ oh gosh, I’m trying to hold myself back from starting from the beginning again right away 😂
I love how real this video got there. You are awesome. ❤️ If you’re looking for a light read I recommend “Beach Read”. It was cute, it didn’t overuse tropes, and although it’s a romance, the premise is actually writers block which I found really interesting.
Would love to hear your input on the book Flowers for Algernon. love your personal POV, and this being one of my fav books, I would love to know your take on it
I started watching your videos for the monthly bujo spreads but this are my favorite videos from you, I enjoy so much how you approach a book and have loved the books you have recommended 🤍🤍🤍 thanks for sharing and hope whatever is going on in your life goes well
I would reccomend the Planetfall series by Emma Newman. I am rereading it this year and remembering just how good they are how much of an impact they had on my the first time. Sci-fi/cyberpunk very character focussed, a lot of exploration of mental health issues.
I've added The Downstairs Girl to my list! My TBR has grown so much from your videos hahaha. I really need to get to N.K jemision's books, but I'm stuck on the waiting list! I 100% get you on the emotional reaction to finishing though... man some writers are amazing and just pull your heartstrings.
I have to try to use my platform for good when so much bad is happening in the world ❤️ No one deserves the kind of hatred we’ve seen directed towards members of the Asian community in the past year and beyond.
I am so sorry to see how Asian communities are being treated and knew I had to try to do something, however small. I hope you’re taking care of your mental health right now ❤️
I just finished The Obelisk Gate and I’m about to start The Stone Sky. Part of me wants to speed read because I NEED know what happens, but another part of me just wants to savor every moment of this series because I don’t know if I’ll read something this good ever again. I agree that the Broken Earth Trilogy is the best fantasy series out there. N. K. Jemisin is truly a genius. Sending you a virtual hug from Portland, Oregon, USA.
Just wanted to say thanks for this very instructive video (as they always are) and to say that I hope you can find more time and calmness to turn the engines down this month. Wish you all the best and a less overwhelming month this time💜👍
I adored, absolutely adored, that series and I cried so much. I’m going to have to re-read it. As for what’s been added to my TBR, Take a Hint, Fierce Femmes, and The Downstairs Girl all sound amazing. I’m currently reading The Conductors (thanks to you), The Invisible Life of Addie Larue (thanks to Cindy Guentert-Baldano), and The Beautiful Blue Death by Charles Finch (a recommendation from a local independent bookstore).
A lot of these books were already on my TBR list but they moved WAY the heck up from this review, most notably I just borrowed the first book in The Broken Earth trilogy right now since it was available from my library on Libby XD I also added The Switch, Winter’s Orbit, and The Downstairs Girl to my tbr! No definite start dates on those but I’ll be diving in ASAP. I’m currently a quarter through Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar, and as an Indian American living in NJ, it’s filling me with the joy of being seen XD Happy April reading~! Enjoy the freedom of picking up whatever, I know I do XD
Your book videos have reinvigorated my reading for new titles and authors- thank you. I really enjoyed The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo (I listened to an audio version on REALM). Currently reading House of Styx from your recommendations.
If you want to read more Asian literature that has just come out, I would love to hear your opinion on "we are not free" from Tracie Chee. I feel it really reflects what is going on now and I'm currently reading it. Have not heard any booktubers cover it so I would be really happy if you could read it!
I adored Take a Hint, Dani Brown! Fake dating is one of my favorite tropes and I really liked the two main characters. As for The Stone Sky it had a little too many sci-fi aspects to it (I'm not into sci-fi) for my liking but DAMN! What an ending! I think an adaptation would help me visualize the world and story better as well. There were too many scenes where I felt my brain overheating and not grasping what was going on. I will be checking out her Inheritance series as well some time in the future.
Haha that’s probably why I loved it so much! I’m looking forward to reading more of N.K. Jemisin’s work ❤️ and I agree, the cataractes in Take a Hint were so loveable!
Wednesday’s live stream was so much fun. I didn’t think I would be interested in the same books 📚 as you - so honestly this is the first TBR I’ve watched. And now I’m hooked, lol! I have added The Downstairs Girl, Blue Ticket, and the Broken Earth series to my TBR. And I’ve begun reading My Dark Vanessa today. Thanks so much - I’ve been floundering for good suggestions!
I always look forward to these videos (and your Goodreads generally) to get great ideas for what to add to my TBR! If you're ever interested in diving into some magical realism, I highly recommend "Before the Coffee Gets Cold" by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. Out of the 230 books I read last year, that was my #1.
Now that I watched your video I really want to finish this series! I loved the first book, but was worried that the rest wouldn’t be as good as the first book. And I needed to let it settle in my mind a bit. When I finish the book I’m reading currently I’m going to read the rest of the series!! Thank you for this honest and beautiful review of these books!
With that reaction I’ve added the trilogy to my TBR doesn’t look like my library have it so I’ll have to get into Amazon or wait until the book shops open over here. I’m currently reading the Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, heard so many good things about it. Really enjoying it so far, it’s a nice easy ready after reading some pretty heavy books.
i've been in the same kind of anxious mood so all i've been reading lately has been romance lmao i just finished who'd have thought by g. benson which, while it deals with some heavy subjects, is a sapphic romance that has a silly premise and utilizes a bunch of the best tropes (enemies-to-lovers, fake relationship, etc). i love watching your wrap ups bc they always give me the best ideas for what to read next! i think i'll be winging it in april as well
I always love these wrap-ups :) you're very eloquent in expressing your opinions. I recently finished 'The Children of Time' which is on Audible and it was the best book I've read in ages. I don't want to hype it up too much, but if the survival of the human race and how spiders would develop their capabilities if given the chance interest you in the slightest I would highly recommend it :) There is a second book I haven't gotten to yet, but the first one had a satisfactory ending and stands on its own feet quite well.
I’m glad you liked to Good Sister. I chose it for my Authentic Books subscription this month and the premise made me think it would either be really great or really terrible.
Hello: I applaud your videos and your critical approach to books. I wanted to ask you, can you make a video about books that made a difference in your life and you recommend? Thanks! Love the video! ❤️❤️❤️
My to-read list is just getting so long. Have you ever read any Robin Hobb? Her Realm of the Elderlings series (starting w/ the Farseer Trilogy) is the most incredible Fantasy story-telling I've ever read in my life. I've read the whole series 5 times and I just sob throughout the entirety of book 9 each and every time, even knowing what's coming. I've never felt more in-touch with a world or a set of characters before or after, so I recommend it to you if you haven't. I'll be picking up the Broken Earth series from this review alone.
Ahhh! I am currently reading Winter's Orbit! I was clapping and squealing when you told publishers to "take a hint like Dani Brown" about CWs. so true but I just love the way you said it 🤣 Also "I need to go ask my husband for a hug, or go snuggle my cats" is the most relatable thing I have ever heard, especially this year
Elizabeth, can you please let me know what type of books you read? I mean do you read physical or audio books or ebooks more? Love your reading wrap ups!!
Honestly, if I could un-read The Broken Earth trilogy, just to re-experience it for the first time again, I would. 100%. It's such a GOOD series and I love it so much.
I think you may enjoy the The Legends of the First Empire Series by Michael Sullivan. The first book is like a character setup for the rest of the series, but it is so interesting. It is adult high fantasy that plays with the idea of colonization, linguistics, technology, and human evolution (also the magic system is super interesting). I just can't recommend it enough because it is so interesting. Also, the author wrote an entire series for his wife because she fell in love with a character... nothing is more cute than that 🥰
One of the best books I've read in March is The Savior's Champion by Jenna Moreci, it's the first book of The Savior's Series. The genre is dark fantasy romance, and I've never been much of a fantasy reader, but besides of course the action taking place in a fantasy world and magic being involved etc it is also a great studium of people in the real world in general and how some circumstances can totally change us and make us do things we would never even consider doing. It's not flawless, I must say, but I really am looking forward to read the second (out now) and the third (in the making) book in the series. Just throwing that in there in case someone or Elizabeth herself would want to check the book out because it's really worth it.
Honestly your reaction after the broken earth trilogy was MEEE after finishing the Daevabad trilogy in March 😂 so many emotions. I still need to read the broken earth trilogy! I have the first 2 books on my shelf
Fantasy series recommendation: The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, its so complex and intricate and amazing with such detailed characters as well as magical elements, it is a hefty series though but its worth the dedication! I love it when a good series lasts a long time though, with some of them you never want the story to end!
@@PlantBasedBride Oh the I have to urge you to do so. The characters kinda feel like friends from a past life because they are just so real. I would love to hear your thoughts on it because I like your character focused and empathetic approach so much!
Thanks so much for the book recommendations! I needed some new ones😍😍😘😘🥰🥰 Also, a like always finds itself on your videos even before it has started as they are always amazing
I felt the same way about The Girls Are All So Nice Here that you did about Blue Ticket! All the characters were incredibly manipulative and we didn't even know any of their motivations so I was just like??? Why??? I also have to be able to connect to the characters in order to enjoy a book!
It’s so frustrating when everyone is awful for no reason in a book! I don’t mind if the book is well crafted and has a clear message that is well devlivered, but Blue Ticket was so empty.
re: my dark Vanessa, When I was in high school my health teacher told us that teen females absorb the home environment and repeat in adult life. That always stuck with me. Up to that point, I only thought of romantic relationships in ONE way. Man and woman meet, fall in love, get married, like in the "Notebook". Now I was like, "oh! there are other possibilities?" and not all of them were positive. That is when I learned that violence, abuse, and such, are learned patterns that stay with you. Relating to this book, society has a way of making it easier or harder for men to treat women this way. Some men are just gross and will do whatever they can get away with. They target women who were *taught* to be obedient to men, same with cults, they target teens who come from abusive households, it's easier to manipulate them.
I think this can happen to anyone, regardless of gender! We learn so much about how relationships should work and how to go about our lives as an adult from what’s modeled to us by parents or other adults in our lives. This is how cycles of abuse perpetuate themselves, sadly.
True! The sad thing is that so much of the pressure comes from myself and my brain being unwilling to give up on the high achiever/perfectionist mindset 😅
Winter's Orbit was my SFF book club's pick for March! Mostly, I liked it. But my book club was kind of more indifferent about it. I think the biggest complaint, though, was there needed to be more worldbuilding. We wanted to know more about the bear/birds/etc. (That said, I think some of the aspects kind of missed the mark for my book club because they are mostly cis/het white women, such as the gender signaling, which I think Maxwell did pretty well.) Oh, there will be a sequel/companion novel and we were all hoping it focuses on Bel.
Oh how interesting! I love seeing how different people interpret the same work. I personally thought the world building was quite excellent, though I definitely would’ve ate it up if there was even more. I found the political system, the characters, and central relationships so intriguing and loved the way Maxwell represented the lingering effects/trauma of domestic abuse.
@@PlantBasedBride Yeah, Jainan's entire story at the beginning and the growing unease of how his relationship with Thaam must have been was SO well done. It was a very great example of "show, don't tell." I want to know more about the different worlds, though, so I am glad there will be another book in this universe.
Please read The Surface Breaks by Louise O'Neill. It's a reimagining of The Little Mermaid but it's totally different. It's about feminism and finding strength in a world where women / mermaids are nothing more than a prize men can win. But the moral of the story is beautiful - just as the writing style. I listened to the audio book and I loved the voice of the speaker. All in all I can highly recommend it
@@PlantBasedBride Oh! I didn't even think about downloading an app... I've been buying ebooks, but I feel limited by my budget. I'll check out the app!
Not all of the books have LGBTQ+ representation, it’s closer to 50%. Regardless, cis straight characters are by far the majority, and I’m not sure how reading more stories centering those experiences would be introducing more variety of identities into my reading. The LGBTQ+ community is not a monolith and contains so many different identities, sexualities, and experiences. That’s true variety!
I can listen to you talk about books for hours
Aw thank you! I guess it’s good I can talk about books for hours, then 😂
I'm glad someone feels the same way I do about the broken earth trilogy!!

That sounds intriguing! I’ll have to look it up ❤️
I immediately had to add Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars AND now I want to re-read the Broken Earth trilogy as well. Well I guess I gotta...
I think you’ll love it if you’re an N.K. Jemisin fan! ❤️
You got me with The Stone Sky“. Now I must read the trilogy 🤗🙏🤩
Please do! It’s incredible 🙌
Okay, I guess Broken Earth is going on my TBR after that reaction, haha. Also, Winter's Orbit!
omd PLEASE READ Throne of Glass, you will love it! I fell in love with it and is amazing.
This is sort of random but I love your necklace SO much! Where did you get it from?
Honestly your reaction after the broken earth trilogy was MEEE after finishing the Daevabad trilogy in March 😂 so many emotions. I still need to read the broken earth trilogy! I have the first 2 books on my shelf
Haha I was such a mess 😅
Fantasy series recommendation: The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, its so complex and intricate and amazing with such detailed characters as well as magical elements, it is a hefty series though but its worth the dedication! I love it when a good series lasts a long time though, with some of them you never want the story to end!
Habe you read Radio silence by Alice oseman yet? I read it thrice last year and I absolutely adore it!
I haven’t!
@@PlantBasedBride Oh the I have to urge you to do so. The characters kinda feel like friends from a past life because they are just so real. I would love to hear your thoughts on it because I like your character focused and empathetic approach so much!
I appreciate the graphs... thank you. Now my TBR is much longer than it was *sigh
Haha I’m sorry (but also not, because most of these books are so worth reading!) 😅
Thanks so much for the book recommendations! I needed some new ones😍😍😘😘🥰🥰
Also, a like always finds itself on your videos even before it has started as they are always amazing
Aw thank you! ❤️
I don’t mind if the book is well crafted and has a clear message that is well devlivered, but Blue Ticket was so empty.
re: my dark Vanessa,
When I was in high school my health teacher told us that teen females absorb the home environment and repeat in adult life.
@@PlantBasedBride true.
I have to say it. The jacket you wear looks totally like a traditional garment my grandfather from the Black Forest owns. Were did you get this?
It’s a vintage cardigan from Poland!
@@PlantBasedBride Ah. Thank you!
I don't if you've tried StoryGraph yet but I think it would be something you would like given the details you include in your reviews.
I’m on both StoryGraph and goodreads 🤗 I’m still getting used to how StoryGraph works!
@@PlantBasedBride I'm not long in storygraph myself. I think goodreads might be the better option for me but we'll see, I'm not the best with change 😂
reading under pressure is not fun, so read when you feel like, hugs for you
True! The sad thing is that so much of the pressure comes from myself and my brain being unwilling to give up on the high achiever/perfectionist mindset 😅
@@PlantBasedBride i agree
Winter's Orbit was my SFF book club's pick for March! Mostly, I liked it. But my book club was kind of more indifferent about it. I think the biggest complaint, though, was there needed to be more worldbuilding. We wanted to know more about the bear/birds/etc. (That said, I think some of the aspects kind of missed the mark for my book club because they are mostly cis/het white women, such as the gender signaling, which I think Maxwell did pretty well.)
Oh, there will be a sequel/companion novel and we were all hoping it focuses on Bel.
@@dodgeremerson I agree! I am really looking forward to learning more about all of the planets in the empire ❤️
Awesome I loved get a life Chloe brown so I’m reading Dani Brown probably in May xx your stats are awesome xx and your crying again set me off xxx
Haha sorry Kendra 😅 I’m always over here with the waterworks
@@PlantBasedBride haha it’s ok I’ve been the same the past few days xx I’ve added the book series to my tbr for sure xx
All in all I can highly recommend it
That sounds incredible! Thank you so much for the recommendation ❤️
Elizabeth, We're both the same ❤️ I'm also an emotional person 🤗
Haha it’s a blessing and a curse!
@@PlantBasedBride Yup 😂 I used to cry in every film when I was a kid 😂
(I think it's spelled "Everina" Maxwell?)
Were you were referring to the description box/chapters? That was an autocorrect I didn’t notice. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
I miss my library :(
I have the Libby app but I miss going to the library in person so much!
@@PlantBasedBride Oh! I didn't even think about downloading an app... I've been buying ebooks, but I feel limited by my budget. I'll check out the app!

Why are all the books LGBTQ+ ? Would like to see more variety..
@@PlantBasedBride I thought all the books you listed said LGBT, my bad.
