In my opinion instructors shouldn't mess around with "beginners" techniques where you draw these little geometric shapes and it's all very methodical. Or at least if the student does study material like that, something you'd see in Lee J Ames, it shouldn't be done for very long. The student should soon look at classical drawing study the Italian and French masters.
