  • After an interesting start to the 2023 Trial World Championship on the previous day in Arteixo, the Spanish GP began its second day with Toni Bou ready to take revenge. Some of the sections were modified during the previous afternoon to make them more selective and this could be clearly seen when the riders reached section 3, with an impossible double entry step that nobody managed to overcome. The same thing happened in section 9, with an important difference, this time someone got it, Toni Bou, clean it!!!!
The sections were clearly tougher than on Saturday, Bou was in one’s element leading on 7 marks at the end of the first lap. The bad news came in section 5, when British rider Toby Martyn had to retire having two cracked vertebrae after a fall hitting his back on sharp-edged stones. Minders were not allowed there, so the new rule criticism was not long in coming. Three days later, FIM reversed its decision, allowing the return of minders in all sections, albeit temporarily.
Saturday's winner, Jaime Busto, did not start well, with three fiascos in sections 3, 9 and 10 as well as a dab in section 5, completing the first lap in 16 marks, the same as Gabriel Marcelli, who, surrounded by a larger crowd on this day, wanted to get back on the podium at home. Busto's hopes of a repeat victory seemed to be slowly fading. But on the second lap, the GASGAS rider gave his all and in a risky action, he was the first and only one to ride section 3 without a maximun, mading an incredible clean. This gave him the strength to complete a stratospheric lap with a single dab in section 10. However, it did not seem to be enough to catch Bou.
Unlike the first day, there were 4 riders initially fighting in the battle for the podium, as Adam Raga completed the first lap in just one more mark than Busto and Marcelli. However, the experienced TRS rider was unable to improve enough.
Toni Bou rides the last section in Arteixo pavilion clean again, thus repeated the first round score in 7 marks to finish in 14, 3 less than the GASGAS rider. The goal was achieved, the revenge in the second round in Galicia was in his pocket, placing him at the top of the overall standings in a tie with Busto. Adam Raga was finally third in 32 marks, 2 less than Marcelli. Jorge Casales completed the top 5, followed by Bincaz, Fajardo, Gelabert, Petrella and Grattarola.
“Yes, for sure it is very important because Jaime is very strong like the other riders. I am very happy with this victory. Today is an important day because yesterday I was in the second place, so it is important this victory and I have better feelings than yesterday, so super-happy”.
On this second day of the Spanish GP, the attendance was higher than on Saturday, the skies were blue and the sun was shining. The women's top class again presented a tough battle, although only 5 from 14 contenders, were apparently candidates to the podium places.
Scorpa rider Berta Abellan has been improving her level in recent seasons. Last year she already gave two clear advices in the form of victory to the 8 times champion, the British Emma Bristow. Starting this season by winning, Berta started the day with motivation at its peak. Her goal was clear, to repeat victory. After a flawless start, Berta lost one dab in section 6 handing Emma the lead, but the Brittish rider lost a maximun in section 9. Berta cleaned 11 of 12 sections, closing the first lap in only one mark against 5 of her rival. The pressure was mounting. Bristow failed again losing a new maximun startiing his second lap in section 3, adding one more dab in the next one. The Sherco rider saw again things were getting complicated.
France's Naomi Monnier, who was 5th on the first day, seemed ready not only to fight for the podium but also to make things difficult for the favourites. In the first lap she was only 1 mark behind Bristow and 5 behind Abellan, while the Italian Andrea Rabino, 3rd on Saturday, made too many mistakes, displaced to 4th place.
Berta Abellan was again the best in the second lap, ending the day in 5 marks lost, she was winner again. Bristow was second in 11 marks, Monnier third in 17. British rider Jack Peace won Trial2 class, Billy Green was 2nd and Pablo Suarez 3rd. Norwegian Jone Sanvik won again Trial3 class, George Hemingway was 2nd, and Mirko Pedretti 3rd.
“I am super excited for today. Yesterday was also a fantastic day and today I could repeat it and to be honest, it counts better when there are to victories in a row they add two times”
