I think she's a girl who gets paid for walking in Kyoto. Looking at her kanzashi, she is a first-year maiko: but first-year maiko don't wear lipstick on t-their upper l'iPod, and she is wearing a full-lips lipstick.
I am not sure because they don't really like all the tourists around the geishas so why they encourage that behaviour? this geisha also walked into a restaurant where she suppose to work. anyway it's interesting what you saying it require a lot of knowledge.
Well, maybe then she could be a real maiko. 😘 Usually real geisha and maiko don't like being bothered while going to work (there is a special police that protects tue girls from unwanted attenctions), and they usually come out in tre evening, so the local authority pays girls to dress like maiko and take pictures with tue tourists! You can even be dressed with kimono and full make up and walk in Gion!!! I saw a comment below, and I apologize if I was wrong
As is said in the comments her name is Marika from Tsurui. She is a senior maiko. The way to tell is that 1.lipstick(as you mentioned) 2.the collar has no red in it and is white(meaning she is approaching the geiko stage) 3.the bun on her head is ofuku(simple flap on the bottom) 4.hardly any paterns on the upper part of the body 5.kanzashi maybe tricky but the dangling is longer for the newbies Usually geikos and maikos never talk to tourists. It doesn't mean they have a bad attitude. If they start doing that and accept pictures and making exceptions they will have to deal with it everyday. Even if you are their customer it's considered to be rude to talk to them on the street especially when they are with other customers.
I don't know anything about local authorities paying girls to dress like maiko to take pictures with tourists. The fake maikos around Gion are tourists who paid from their own pocket to studios to dress up like maiko, but those are easily distinguishable from the real maiko. Real maiko have terribly expensive kimono, while those studios cannot afford those terribly expensive kimonos and real accessories. This maiko here is Marika and she's a real maiko. There's nothing wrong with her kanzashi: this kanzashi is willow and it always have those long branches, also this kind of branch is different from the ones standardized for first year maiko in wich will always have triangular petals only on the sides. Her brooch sash for sure worths ten thousand dollars or more, no fake maiko would have such a treasure and I REALLY doubt a fake maiko would walk so gracefully on those tall shoes.
