i think Regine's edge is she sings with heartfelt emotions... she doesn't only impress people with her vocal skills but stirs them with the emotions she puts in her singing... at a very young age, she can already deliver mature emotions ... she is not a mere copy cat of other singers ..she delivers or interpret the songs' meanings from her heart ... that's what makes her a TRUE SINGER that is still sought out and respected in the Philippine music industry after 20 years...
they stopped the contest because PHL dominated the contest for like the very few years. My personal bias believes that, if the continued the contest, and PHL starts bringing in their best talents, NO other country will win the competition for at least more than a decade lol
I remember this! People were talking about how Regine started in soft tones and on the high notes using head tones but she pulled out all the stops during the last refrain of this Rodgers & Hammerstein song from the musical Carousel. THe judges must have been blown away by Regine's voice coming from this thin, frail-looking body.

charice is just a discovered here in youtube and soon she'll fade away. it doesnt mean that if you are invited to perform in ophra or ellen means you're great. regine work so hard and she's really amazing she last 2 decades w/out fading. no one can ever hold a single high note as powerful as regine, even mariah. but mariah has the quality in her voice. that vocal texture is unique and rare in this world. regine can't enunciate the words sometimes and she sounds thick, belting

Actually, the song "And I'm telling you" was her preliminary round song that put her in the top 5 (final round). In the finals, she sang "You'll never walk alone" that made her win the grand prize. :)
I watched this in 1989 and I think succeeding years from 1988 tayo ang grand champion. Ivy violan and Dulce also competed in the asia pacific song fest and won the grand champion spot. Hope may mag upload nung mga yun dito sa YT. Plus may World Kite song Festival sa Lahti, Finland naman ginanap and si Ivy Violan ang nag champion dun.

Sa Batch 1, si Dulce ang best singer, she sang “Memory” from the musical “Cats.” Sa Batch 2 si Ivy Violan ang representative natin, but they did not announce the best singer for Batch 2. What they announced was the Best Singer Overall - Ivy Violan. The rule was to combine their scores to determine the winning city. Obviously, Manila ang champion. Ivy Violan sang “No Way To Treat A Heart” na original ni Martin Nieverra. Yun din ang kinanta nung nanalo na sila (dahil siya nga ang Best Singer Overall) then sumali si Dulce sa pagkanta.
