Met Johan numerous times, always a super awesome guy.
Very imposing guy, Johan Hegg, but super chill. I remember going to a signing session in Vancouver before a gig. I got chatting to Johan, who was surprised to meet a random Swede in Canada. He ended up convincing the rest of the band to be in a group pic with me and my friend. Will never forget that! The guys really love their fans. Respect.

+Dan I know right, he seems like such a kind hearted, down-to-earth person. I saw Amon Amarth live about two years ago and he had a very gentle stage presence, was always smiling, and really got along with the crowd.
+Dan Met him in İstanbul a couple years back. Nice guy and very kind. He even let me touch his beard. Not a big fan of Amon Amarth, though. They sound the same on the last 3 albums.

I've seen them live a couple of times at a Danish metal festival, Copenhall, And between each song he would always say thank you several times to the crowd, he honestly seems like such a softie irl :P Which is kinda funny considering the music he makes xD
Excellent band and fantastic guys. Blew my knee at one of their gigs and they made sure I got medical attention and then their tour manager called me next day and offered me free tickets for the next gig in Manchester England. Jomsviking is an awesome album Tobias has made a huge difference on drums on this album

I did indeed, they couldn't have been more amazing. I even got to meet the guys backstage whilst waiting for the ambulance to turn up. Hopefully will see them this year again in the UK
I love the band, but it sucks a lot of their videos' comment sections are populated by a bunch of white supremacists who actually worship Norse gods.

Johan seems like such a cool guy, like the type of guy you could just sit and drink while talking to him for hours.
Johan is such a kind and down-to-earth guy. I worked at Wacken 2022 (where Amon Amarth played a surprise gig as "Guardians of Asgaard") as a camera technician for the livestreaming. He gave an interview in the artist area in a tv tent where I was responsible for the technical production. He was really relaxed and did some smalltalk with the whole production crew. On stage he really appears like a big bulky guy but first I didn't even reccognize him because he looks SO different in real life. Later that day he came back to the interview tent because he thouht one of his mates lost some personal things there. I was quite suprised to see him there again. I will never forget the Wacken livestream production where I met so many of my heroes and shook hands with them. Thanks to Johan for some really nice smalltalk!

Met Johan on the set of Vikings the other day, what a cool guy.
I've seen Amon Amarth live for the very first time 2 weeks ago and that was easily one of the best/top concerts I have ever been to. Before the show, Johan even studied some Slovak expressions/words in order to keep up with the crowd :D and he did that very well. Personally for me, he's one of the most inspirational metal artists to exist.

sure I did. One of the best concerts I experienced for sure :) well, it was without pyro, it was a club concert but at least they had the steam :D they perform with true passion. If you want to see them live, DO IT - it's really worth it
I saw them recently open for Ghost in Milwaukee (Aug 12, '23) they were phenomenal!! And it was a thrill to see that the audience gave it up for Amon Amarth almost equally to Ghost ❤ Good times 🤟

That's got to be the most hearty handshake I've ever seen
They don't seem to release a bad album, looking forward to their next! And the first album they did release Once sent from a golden hall is great. Also Johan is a friendly guy. I think the reason Amon Amarth alone are referred to as Viking metal is not just the lyrics but the passion the band have for I guess their cultural/mythological roots, and even some of the songs somehow sound perfectly in place were they in a Viking time.
I appreciate Johan's honesty.

I was there for their first ever India show in 2009! They co-headlined with Textures. It was mind-blowing! The tickets were suprisingly cheap (500 rupees / Less than 10 dollars)
I watched them open at the Wiltern. Been a fan ever since.

I remember the 1st time i seen Amon Amarth in a magazine.. thought good luck ya dummies... viking metal hahahaha well... my buddy took my to a concert for my bday and it was Eluveitie and Amon Amarth. Ive been hooked since the 1st song they played. Guess i learned to listen before i judge!

I can see Johan's point about people getting easily misled about the term "Viking metal". Seems a lot of power metal bands can be ill-defined that way. I simply see AA as a very melodic death metal band, or a power metal band with growling instead of clean vocals.
Plus, we have absolutely NO EVIDENCE of what true viking music could've sounded like back in the old norse days. It's kinda weird...
I'm sure many people forego that thinking them as Viking Metal because of the imagery and topics of their songs and albums.

Michael Borg that's debatable. Red beard could have meant angry and childish, which was a description used after the christianization of Scandinavia. If you Google it you can find more information.
