      Yes, and Red Mill, built in 1821, still stands on sister river in Shelby and Johnson counties, Sugar Creek. It stands on the West side London Rd just South of the new bridge on CR 400 N. Unfortunately, when the new bridge was built, the mill race was eliminated, although the Eastern walls of the race still stand.
      Red Mill closed in the 1970s and is still owned and maintained by Garver family descendants of the last operators.
      Before the Covid pandemic shutdown, it was an annual featured field trip for local students. I do not know whether the trips have resumed.
      My family owned the 2nd farm downstream on the left bank near Boggstown. The Joseph Boggs Historical Society exhibits numerous renderings of The Red Mill at their museum in Boggstown.

    I live near and have spent a lot of time around and inside the Bonneyville Mill. Really a beautiful, secluded spot that offers a lot of ways to enjoy nature. The trout fishing around those streams is amazing and our local parks department still grinds grains in the mill for public sale! I've whipped up some great cornbread with their product.

      It’s a shame that it couldn’t be saved. Back then, people didn’t think of how it might be a big tourist draw, like Bridgeton or Rockville. If money was available, a reconstructed mill and revitalized town, in 1800’s era store fronts, could be a huge attraction.

Then in the 7os they started to restore it an a tornado just missed it! Took down trees all around it. I finally got to go in it! It's beautiful. Beautiful flowers around it too. My pleasure!
      When I was a kid, the 1776 American Bicentennial was in full swing, and my elementary was both teaching all the history, and taking us on field trips to learn about pioneer life. I was just in love with all of it! However, my Mother had been a city girl, living in downtown Indianapolis, and her parents moved the family to rural Lawrence county, when she was a teenager. They didn’t even have electricity or running water at first! “Mom, I wish I could go back in time and be a pioneer!” She looked at me straight-faced and said, “I did that, and let me tell you: it’s not that great.” 😂

    I went to spring mill state park. It was neat. I live in jasper area . The jasper mill is neat. About a mile from my home on the patoka river there used to be a mill in the early 1800’s. According to my neighbor who is a historian Abraham Lincoln and his father went there. The only thing left is a few logs sticking out of the bank. This was before the time of jasper mill. Loved the video Roger.

    • @AdventureswithRoger
      @AdventureswithRoger  Рік тому +2

      Thanks Edward! There were a TON of mills, especially in southern Indiana, where people from the east floated down the Ohio River to Louisville, Kentucky. The Falls of the Ohio rapids required they get out of the water and go around the area, or settle at Louisville. Some ferried across to Indiana, and with all the grains farmers produced,mills were a necessity!
      I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been to Spring Mill, but it’s my hands down favorite.

      I’ve had many conversations, especially with people in Indianapolis, about how Indiana’s wonders aren’t well-marketed. Often times, people that live north of Columbus, don’t even know about Spring Mill or Clifty Falls. The state of Indiana tends to market Indy sports, museums, wineries, and “oh, southern Indiana has some historic places down there.” After 171 films, and still many to go, there is so much more to discover! 🙂

    Metamora is one of the most magical places in Indiana! Come to St.Paul, Indiana and see the old limestone excavation areas. Where they dug out of Pats pond. There is a cave there called Dead mans cave because of hobo that died in there where he lived. It's got a beautiful falls that feeds into the flat Rock river with a few smaller caves. And the limestone mill is located on Hidden Paradise campground. The old mining cart rails are still there, but most of the walls are falling down due to erosion, but still noticeable. Lots of history that little town. Lincoln came through on his inauguration. Lots of other things but my thumb hurts.
