The 1990s was an Era of where Rap included a lot of scratching in many songs.I like this style , Trap is okay, but this is way better, Those are some great DJs up there!
That was point of hip hop and to me still is breakbeat aka breakdance, Trap is pop hip hop as Rap was hc hiphop, you pick yuor side, follow the leader or be yourself like in every genre
I remember the first time I heard Babu with his opening scratch routine, I got chills! I still do! It's so dope!!! Tony Vegas has nothing on Babu, he gets squashed!
I remember Vegas being the best thing since sliced bread but looking at him now he really overdoes certain things like echoes and crabs. Also, his deck hand seems to to a lot of of 'pulling' as opposed to stabbing / pushing. Babu is so much funkier here.
I would say abit further to be honest. Its a shame mateys needle kept coming off the record..... . # put the needle on the record , let the drum beat go like this.... .
ACMENTERTAINMENT1 He never left, he's been Djing and producing for all the underground heads ever since.. you'll see him a lot with his group Dilated Peoples. just since him at the 2013 Rock the Bells. Killed it on the 1210's!
im not even a huge babuu fan ,,but respect him fully,,,,i remember win i first saw him he was just ok,,,,then outta nowhere his skills drastically improved making him one of the big dawgs along with all his crew of djs posse,,they kept real dj in alive n kept dj in going into our serato n tractor days of present,,they still kept the skills n the art of the mix…i do believe babuu and that whole clan cut chemist,z trip, the whole fat beats clan,,,, too many great djs of that school to name,,,they all kept the djs going when it seemed djs were diisapearing from the scene,,thanks frm dj stepchild..n babuu killed this guy ,,peace
If people want to here like some ancient version of music thats like this, listen steve reich "its gonna rain" or go further down the rabbit 🐇 hole and look up tape music, or phase music. Anyway, this is just all kinds of sick.
His crew The Beat Junkies just celebrated their 20th Anniv. not too long ago. He's doing work with Dilated Peoples and doing venues out here in L.A. now and again.
Vegas was trying to crap with the line fader but the effect was not there. some of his stuff was ok but not on that day to beat Babu... Babu brought it. Real vinyl tho...Ill take Vegas on vinyl than others on Serato... it's djing not Space Invaders
What happened in Tony Vegas' two rounds? I guess in the first round the head shell wasn't screwed in properly? What was the issue in the second round? Any one know? All them cats in the 90's were sick. Beat Junkies, Piklz, Scratch Perverts, Allies, X-Men, all of them.
I was the ITF VP and this was me and Alex' event. To be honest, when we did our Eastern Category Battles in NY where Tony won and qualified for the Finals, we really thought he had a realistic shot against Babs. Tony let that needle skip get to him and it showed throughout his performance. Still a dope battle though. BUT Babu vs. Roli Rho in the Beat Juggling Finals that same night, is till this day one of the best battles of all time.
crabing and flareing had just caught on so to see somebody scratching like this both Tony and Babu were amazing that night I saw Tony do that routine without messing up it's somewhere on UA-cam if you want to see him do the routine right and he destroyed it props 2 both of these amazing DJs
1:25 I can’t believe I just randomly stumbled across the most obscure Rob Zombie sample ever. Listen to Get High by Rob Zombie, the sample he uses is in that song. “Bob man you rockin this shit”. Insane
Is that the thin Vestax mixer? I had one of the as well. I also had one of their "T-shaped" mixers, which was even thinner. The only problem with it was the fader wouldn't loosen up, so I sold it.
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeendgeiiil !!! Datz Da REAL Way, scratching goes... Then Nothing. 2 Turntables (da legendary Technics 1210) ^^ Every Saturday on MTV ...DMC (Disco Mix Club) Worlds best Dj Contest
Graham Mason And most important the records! Don't forget the records. Collecting those records is a skill in itself ;) Need all the ingredients for the alchemy to work ;) Peace
not sure what the problem is the 1st time, but to have a tune set from the start a groove behind is an amateur mistake from a class dj! you just cannot make basic errors at this level!!
I have a DJ Premier vs DJ Glacticist from '89 tape, it was sick asfuck, dj premier won by a landslide. Also a Terminator X vs Funkiee F, Funkiee F from '93 tape, Funkiee F won with scratching an mixing Eric B & Rakim's "Know The Ledge" and Big Daddy Kane's Nuff Respect for the last 35 seconds. it was tight and out of sight. DJ Jazzy Jeff vs DJ Laminate from '87 is pretty good , DJ jazzy Jeff dominated him
There are a lot of electronic aids that make a halfway decent DJ look like a pro. Back then it was 100% raw talent and timing. Today's DJ's are better in a sense they can lay down a track in real time with MANY more tools at their disposal.
It's our human theme we share with technology....a basic form of tech comes along n people push it to and PAST the limit of creativity....then with time the tools become much more powerful, and are so advanced that the human takes a back seat to the tech and therefore loses creativity and skill the more tech advances...year 2100 were gonna be able to levitate and move over 1000mph and communicate telepathically...but we'll be the absolutely retarded n completely reliant on A.I

Cough cough nu metal
What scratch is dat
You mean hiphop
Those were the days.. cue points were memorized in the brain.. only real djs understand the long night's practicing to get that perfect scratch mix.
AUTO BEAT SYNC
AUTO CUE POINTS
AUTO TRANSITIONS
LAUNCHPAD
AUTOMATIC SCRATCHING
PREMADE MIXES
lastly
COMPUTERS
>Virtual DJ
And after so many damaged vinyls
Leroy Faavesi in 1997, circle stickers were used to set cue points. Not memory.
@@priyonjoni still took more talent. than computers odd today. You actually had to time it and catch it under pressure
No, cue points were marked with tape to get right to where they wanted to be. The technology does nothing if you don't already have the skills...
man, how did I end up watching this ?
same
THIS IS HIP HOP
I started with dj Starscream!
You followed your heart, brotha.
🤣🤣🤣 I was thinking the exact same thing!
DJs have changed a lot since then... DJ Babu was awesome!
Was? Is!
kendo512 Yup! he is still in the game true to his roots and killing it
I remember the first time I heard Babu with his opening scratch routine, I got chills! I still do! It's so dope!!! Tony Vegas has nothing on Babu, he gets squashed!
Babu feels good on your ears. That corny Tony Reno guy in his funny hat just hurts your ears.
Vegas was decent git to give flowers but babu shut it down
STRAIGHT DOPE begins at 3:17
Faraz Khan ?
Very true
Thanks for the cue point.

It's Fresh!! 😎
I remember Vegas being the best thing since sliced bread but looking at him now he really overdoes certain things like echoes and crabs. Also, his deck hand seems to to a lot of of 'pulling' as opposed to stabbing / pushing. Babu is so much funkier here.
REAL HIP HOP DJ.TWO TURNTABLES AND A MIXER.NO DIGITAL STUFF!!
Yes because digital = bad
If only Tony had done more crabs, the one thing his rounds lacked was fast solo crabbing
haha. finally three years later, you get the haha this deserves
@@dru-chambers 2nd
Vegas would’ve won if he coulda kept a beat going. I couldn’t really even feel what he was doing because he was all over place.
He couldn't concentrate after the first skip
3:37 mah gawd.
..back when DJ'ing took some actual talent..
This trash tho
Kenny T. This is trash though
@@Andy-bh8hw You're right. There was much better even back then.
It's a scratching competition...
True
Babu's Funkiness Level: #LEGENDARY
Fake, there's no laptop and random button pushing
Shiny Kingdra this is old
Shiny Kingdra as you can see its from 97'
THEY ARE USING REAL TURNTABLES! Not controllers that you kids call real these days that you hook up to laptops
sarcasm guys hello????
WHOOOSH
I love this oldies, u learn A LOT from this talents 👉🍻🍻
Babu and Short Kut always been my favorite, they really make the turntables their instrument 🎻
Great to have your feedback on the channel! Our imports shop brought in these particular ITF tapes in late 97.
babu kept a beat the whole time, vegas didn't thats what killed him,
Both badass but different.
Babu is a hip hop scratching genius.
Vegus uses the decs as an instrument.
10 months later...im back and babu making those zigga ziggaz talk
They have completely different styles. How can you compare'em?
Yep, totally different
"Style is the answer of everything"
Vegas is all flash with no groove
You can, in a battle. It’s who executed their style the best wins ..not difficult. Real hip hop battles.
Also, Tony didn’t pull of his stuff well at all Babu is far superior on the cuts
Babu and Short Kut always been my favorite, they really make the turntables their instrument 🎷
One of the funkiest scratch routines in a battle, ever.
From minute 8:24 to minute 8:37 it was PERFECT THE SYNCHRONY, between scratch and base of beat jazz, second epics of tony vegas
I would say abit further to be honest.
Its a shame mateys needle kept coming off the record..... .
# put the needle on the record , let the drum beat go like this.... .
No matter who won they both showed how much talent they had and gave amazing performances . Cool video. ^_^
Rip to those needles
Yep. Expensive hobby back then. Those needles costs A LOT when you need a new needle every week.
Negative. The M447's were made to take such beatings...
ACMENTERTAINMENT1 He never left, he's been Djing and producing for all the underground heads ever since.. you'll see him a lot with his group Dilated Peoples.
just since him at the 2013 Rock the Bells. Killed it on the 1210's!

Vegas was ok but completely out classed by babu
Damn I was automatically rooting for California since I'm from there but damn it was no contest, Babu put him in a coffin
Babu been a beast 💪
Nothing gets more 90s than this lol
This is more of an 80s thing
This is what real DJ´ing was back in the days, none of the BS we see nowdays.
VEGAS perfected this first routine for i think the 99 Battle and killed it.
2nd dude murders so hard god damn. They both do great but that 2nd dude buries the first just off confidence alone
Dj BABU = True B-Boy mentality.Word.
babu, straight b-boy battle attitude .hip hop. tony not at all.
Tony's a toy...Babu ate his food.
Remember when you had to swap records or use tape and decals to hit your next cue or break without pressing buttons? I remember.
I think they were both amazing, but Babu killed it.
That Vegas really messed up, and acts like a spoiled child.
If people want to here like some ancient version of music thats like this, listen steve reich "its gonna rain" or go further down the rabbit 🐇 hole and look up tape music, or phase music.
Anyway, this is just all kinds of sick.
its gonna rain is such a good pick, severed heads, although more industrial, have a lot of good tape music too B)
This is one of the elements of hip hop with out this there's no hip hop and ist 4 this is just one
thanks for uploading. i had this on vhs which disappeared lol
Shoutout to Tony Vegas doing the most Tony Vegas shit imaginable (it's really up to the individual to decide whether that's good or bad, tbh)
Babu's 1st set was clean, well mapped out and executed... Daaaaayum!
His crew The Beat Junkies just celebrated their 20th Anniv. not too long ago. He's doing work with Dilated Peoples and doing venues out here in L.A. now and again.
Props to Tony Vegas & Babu for this fine battle
Babu is a freakin' legend man 🙌
Babu by far. Vegas is technical to the point that it looses all musicality
Vegas was trying to crap with the line fader but the effect was not there. some of his stuff was ok but not on that day to beat Babu... Babu brought it. Real vinyl tho...Ill take Vegas on vinyl than others on Serato... it's djing not Space Invaders
BABU IS THE MAN! HIS SCRATCH ARE UNREACHABLE!!! "THE KING OF TURNTABLISM"!🎤♾️🎶🎶
I think in the second round he realized Babu whooped his a$$
@funkateer17 how do u feel Vegas was robbed? What battle DJ starts his set and not have his records cued up?....TWICE!
Remember this like it was yesterday Babu rocking it!
the best years...today's DJ'S will never understand...

Absolutely incredible.
Real skills, no computer software could ever take the place of true physical skills.
Babu is dope as fuck!
hell yeah he is!
so this is the real Disc Jockey..
my headphones caught fire😂🔥🔥literally
no like im serious my headphones started smoking and are useless now🙁
Babu's just like some the best jugglers alive...seem like he can thump out any beat at will...just look at how he did it here on one deck..
crabing and flareing had just caught on so to see somebody scratching like this both Tony and Babu were amazing that night I saw Tony do that routine without messing up it's somewhere on UA-cam if you want to see him do the routine right and he destroyed it props 2 both of these amazing DJs
8:14 look I don't know the technical aspect to scratching but that didn't sound good!
Daniel Khastou It was alright.
First guys is just a bunch of noise while the second guy is a Straight Smoove Operator!
Babu is amazing!
vegas scratching is utter noise
There’s an art to that as well you uncultured moron
@Get Nae Nae'd Agree
It's all ass.
O Vercetti it’s all flash with no soul. It’s the Pinocchio theory in practice
Vegas too heavy handed. Kept making the record skip
1:25 I can’t believe I just randomly stumbled across the most obscure Rob Zombie sample ever. Listen to Get High by Rob Zombie, the sample he uses is in that song. “Bob man you rockin this shit”. Insane
I put my gemini away and bought a mixstick when I first heard this. Damn almost 20 years ago!

Yes mixtik was (I think) the o6pro
Does anyone know the track name with the BIG BASS LINE babu uses in the last session?
Formula 4 “Killer Groove” 1984 Malaco Records
Babu é mestre🇧🇷👏🏼👊🏼
No laptop no software. This is awesome.
I wish djs still put out tapes like this.
Awesome video man thanks

Sooo, we have two 1 handed scratchers...ill pick the lefty...both scratched with unbridled savagery..needed a little more uniform...
This is before serotonin. Youngin..& lab tops...u had 2 do the work..
Why is this so much better than the me recent ones?
not sure what the problem is the 1st time, but to have a tune set from the start a groove behind is an amateur mistake from a class dj! you just cannot make basic errors at this level!!

When DJ Vegas was playing, I thought we were in the "chicken scratching" category of this competition
ohh my god.... babu !!!
great battle but i see why people will take babus side on this one vegas just did alot of crabs at different speeds and incorporated drum cuts
Please dont stop the music :)
Babu did better
No competition.
There are a lot of electronic aids that make a halfway decent DJ look like a pro. Back then it was 100% raw talent and timing. Today's DJ's are better in a sense they can lay down a track in real time with MANY more tools at their disposal.

Hip hop won this night. Oh how I miss these days.
Amazing!!!!!
