- Join me on what is most likely the most spectacular hike I've ever done. The PR9 route in Madeira, known as Levada do Caldeirão Verde. Through lush jungle terrain, Lavada caves, and beautiful valleys, the hike officially ends at an incredibly impressive 100-metre waterfall. However, I pushed through to a closed-off section that wasn't as dangerous as advertised, leading to a long labyrinth of caves and secret waterfalls. Truly an incredible place.
at 48 mins into your video the way straight on is the Pico Ruivo tunnel 2.4km, I did it 7 years ago highly recommended but a long walk back to Santana although there is a bus stop on the Ribeiro Frio road if you are going back to Funchal (bus 56 /103)
the train tracks were used to dig the Pico Ruivo tunnel in the 70s, the water goes to the Faja de Noguiera power station and eventually all the way in tunnel under the island to near Monte (not passable but you can walk the Southern section for quite a long way to the end)
ps they are not caves, all man made. The only natural cave I'm aware of is at Sao Vicente, a lava cave which are very rare, only other ones in Europe are in the Canary islands
@@grimpeursdusud1533 thank you for all the info, I really hope I can get back there one day soon 😊
@@HikingAndHistory you're welcome! I've been doing levadas there for 8 years now and have almost run out of ones to do! I do like the extreme ones with big drops (protected) and long tunnels.
@ very jealous you get to spend so much time in such an incredible place. Keep exploring! 😊
