- From 1956, Perry is joined by Martha Davis and Calvin Ponder, whose musical comedy act, "Martha Davis & Spouse," enjoyed great popularity in the late 1940s and 1950s. Sadly, Davis -- an immensely talented pianist -- died just four years after this performance at the age of 42 from cancer.
The song "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" was written in 1935 by Fred E. Ahlert and Joe Young.
Did you notice while she plays, Martha rarely even looks at the keyboard!- Such talent!
I actually start to tear up when I watch this knowing that we'll never see this kind of class and talent again.
I tear up as well. It hurts. I take it personally because at my age of 64yo I'd never heard of martha davis and she's so wonderful. Man what a time. It seems she had a goid spouse too. Cool dude. Glad I discovered Martha now
So true
It's really lovely.
Priceless. ❤
Christ! Real music.
What an unbelievable talent Martha is. Voice, piano, humor. There won't be any of her likes again so these sketches are so valuable.
64 years ago and i still can picture what a smooth entertainer Perry Como was. Could you ever be so lucky as to have him cut your hair.
Isn’t that the greatest performance of two great performers who are sadly no longer with us. Both RIP and Thankyou for your talent. ❤
AT 82 0h what a gem Istumbled on!! I only knew Pierino , But I fell for whole TRIO!!! SOOO FINE!!!!
Martha Davis was a gifted comedienne and pianist. Sorry to lose such a gift at a young age.
🧡
So true,, she was dead from Cancer just 4 years after this broadcast.
And from what I have read,Perry was one of the "clean" guys in the entertainment business,no fooling around and messing up his life like so many others.
You are right. And one of the most talented but underrated one.
Both Davis and Como are cool.
Real entertainers. Not many left now. Professionals and they were nice people too. RIP.
Now that's pure class !!
Pure joy to watch and hear...made me freakin' cry for some reason....
Great entertainment, great dignity, and great humility. Whatever happened to that?
Such fun they were having together. Made it all the more enjoyable.
Jjj
I'm in love with Martha Davis! Why did I never hear of her. I just discovered her and she so reflected Fats Waller. What a gift!(I hope to steal a riff or two) Perry Como lived in Tequesta, Florida. I knew an officer who responded when his wife passed as I worked in the same town. Now they are together again ❤ They're probably in the cemetery off of County Line Road.
Incredible Lady!
Can't get enough of things like this!
she is tooooooooo good.
I love this just about as much as I did in the late 1950s.
Brilliant. 😊
I am from the 21st century......I wish I was born a few decades earlier because then I may have had the chance to see this beautiful music in person! This is pure talent....not the stuff I have grown up with.
Ha, ! I am from 20th century and said the same thing . But isn't it great we have technology that will allow us to enjoy things we weren't around for .?
Then maybe we should make something worth growing up with. Allways looking back to the past makes progress slow, and can make the present look worse, which it definitley isnt
Thats why I appreciate that people taped these performances.
@@marlonmerz9850 I disagree with looking back to the past makes progress slow. We are supposed to learn from the past and the improve what we did. That's how you make progress ! The present (now) is worse and better !! The shows and the music worth growing up with are ALL from the past !!! I am glad they were part of life !!!
Gorgeous talent. And tragic, as was the legend of so many of her time. Lost her just four years later.
Extraordinary guys doing fabulous music
Love Perry, always! And, Martha is so cool and fun.
Can't beat a golden oldie ✨️

Absolutely fantastic singing and playing. RIP.
Martha Davis was a delightful entertainer. I will have to see if I can find more of this. Thank you.

And make believe it came from you : )
Very sweet song .Thanks for the post
Que Chingón !! That´s Class !!
Delightful!
Hugely enjoyable!
Who said Perry Como ain't rock 'n' roll. This is Jerry Lee Lewis medium tempo style.
Great performance
This is so good it denies description :) !
What a sneaky fella, he skipped „at the bottom“, this was raunchy joke on 50s tv right there.
Did Phil Hartman ever do a Perry como impression? Should have...
Wow.
She was protege of Waller....incredible
My silver dollars are now in the same order
Martha Davis absolutely STEALS THE SHOW!
She does indeed. I was amazed because I never heard of martha and spouse. However she is beautiful soulful and wonderful. That fantastic woman left at 44yo in 1961. She gave joy to so many
Roses are red violets are blue Im in this mess and so are you lol
and that kids... was the first time rapping was used in music
Wow. Fabulous and so sad she died so young just like the others like Tatum and Waller. What's going on? ...
I love how Martha mentions Fats Waller, who in my opinion has the best version of this song.
