Who is Freddie O'Connell? Nashville's new mayor delves into his family's uniquely American experience. From his mother's grandfather, an Orthodox Rabbi in Poland believed to have perished in the Holocaust, to his mother's upbringing in Dickson, Tennessee, Freddie explores the rich tapestry that makes up his American identity. The interview culminates in Freddie's call to action for strengthening community ties, emphasizing the importance of finding a "third space" where neighbors can come together and connect.

We talk about the "third space" at the end of this interview. Is that the secret for healing America's divide? Have you heard of the third space? Do you have one? let me know!

Such a good interview! What a different experience of becoming American than what you've explored to date, Danielle. I love how Freddie said his mother didn't know her father had a thick Polish (perhaps Yiddish??) accent! They were who they were.
I hope my children are interested in family history enough to ask these questions and learn about their origins.

As a Nashville resident, this man makes me proud. Not all of us in the South are terrible people but the institutionalisation of racism is still very much a thing. Guys like this are generally positive steps in the right direction and I wish more of my fellow Tennesseans could see that.

Quite fascinating! I picked up a few new phrases, such as "age of credentialism," which is an ideal way to put it, and third place, which is a term I had never heard of. Thanks for sharing.

    Source; Wikipedia
Jeremiah Joseph O'Keefe III (July 12, 1923 - August 23, 2016) was an American fighter ace, Democratic Party politician, insurance executive, and funeral director.
O'Keefe was interested in civil rights and took a stand throughout his life. O'Keefe described an event that led him to being active and attentive to minority relations. While in college, he was asked to join a business fraternity. The fraternity told him that Jews and Blacks were not allowed to participate in the fraternity; O'Keefe told the fraternity that he was uninterested in joining unless they allowed minorities to participate and join. The fraternity obliged, and altered their policy allowing minorities to join. O'Keefe then became president of the fraternity for a year succeeding the policy change.
He later was elected the Mayor of Biloxi, Mississippi for two terms from 1973 to 1981. It was during his tenure as mayor that O'Keefe stood up to the Ku Klux Klan during the Civil Rights-era which earned him death threats and a burning cross in his yard. Nevertheless, O'Keefe stood his ground then as he had in 1945 and never backed down.
In 1995 O'Keefe, represented by Willie E. Gary, won a jury trial concerning a contractual dispute involving his family businesses against Ray Loewen's Loewen Group. He and fellow plaintiffs were awarded $500 million in damages, a sum that would have bankrupted the defendant. O'Keefe eventually settled for a significantly lower sum of $175 million. The Burial, a film loosely inspired by the case, will be released on Amazon in October 2023.

I am listening to You Are The One by Bernadette on the radio. She is a Latin freestyle singer. You should do a video on Latinos btw. Most of the 80s and 90s Miami scene freestyle singers were Latino people

Yeah this guy definitely has a Jewish Jawline.
    Reminds me of David Schwimmer.
He's a member of the tribe. I'm sure he supports open borders for the U.S. but probably has a different opinion for Israel's border security policies.

I am not sure how to interprete your comments.
(It is coming across with anti-semitic overtones).
      Jewish jawline? What's that?
Why do you assume he's a member of the tribe?
Member of the tribe means Jewish.
Does he identify as a Jew (not just having Jewish ancestry)?
      Does he practice Judaism?
How do you know his view on borders in the U.S.?
Why do you presume to know his view on borders in Israel?

Jewish men have very weak and delicate jawline, unlike European men from most parts of the continent, were the mandible of European men is more robust and heavy.

Great interview and discussion. A lot of insights. I especially like the reminder of the loss of third space and the reminder off what that is. This has happened nearly everywhere. I believe we need to regain it with whatever means we can.
