  • Genesis 49:1-12:
Jacob gathers his sons to bless them with prophetic blessings that outline the futures of their respective tribes. In these verses, Reuben is told he will not excel because he defiled his father's bed. Simeon and Levi are cursed for their violence, and it is prophesied that their descendants will be scattered in Israel. Judah, however, is praised and told that his brothers will praise him; his descendants will rule until "Shiloh" comes, referring to a figure of peace, and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
    Psalm 55:16-19:
In these verses, the psalmist expresses his trust in God amidst betrayal and conflict. He recounts how he calls upon God, who saves him, evening, morning, and noon. He describes God's hearing of his voice and the deliverance of his soul in peace from the battle waged against him. The psalmist reflects on the protection provided by God despite the presence of many foes, emphasizing God's enduring justice and the psalmist's reliance on divine intervention.
    Proverbs 18:1:
This proverb highlights the dangers of social isolation, noting that one who isolates himself seeks his own desire and breaks out against all sound judgment. It reflects on the self-serving nature of those who withdraw from others, often ignoring wisdom and common interests.
    Matthew 23:23-39:
Jesus condemns the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy in this passage. He criticizes them for focusing on minutiae in the law while neglecting its more significant moral demands, such as justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Jesus also rebukes them for their ostentation and self-promotion in religious matters and for being inwardly corrupt despite outward appearances of piety. He mourns over Jerusalem, expressing sorrow for the city's history of rejecting prophets and those sent to her, prophesying that their house will be left desolate.
    Mark 12:41-44 and Luke 21:1-4:
Both passages describe the same event where Jesus observes people donating money at the temple. He points out a poor widow who contributes two small copper coins, which is all she has. Jesus comments to His disciples that this widow has put in more than all the other contributors who gave out of their abundance because she gave all she had to live on, highlighting her sacrifice and devotion.
