This week I am sharing a video about one of my favorite historic Landscape Architects, Jens Jensen. He was far ahead of his time and still has important lessons to teach us today. I hope you enjoy the video. Jensen was a character with a lot of "professional drama". At times, it reads like a Soap opera.
My goodness keep these wonderful stories of the people behind these amazing landscapes and gardens . I must begin traveling to some of these amazing spaces. You’ve inspired me by sharing the history.
I love history almost as much as I love gardening. :) Your narration and video made Jens come to life for me. My takeaways.... He was a true naturalist but not a purist as he was willing to give Mrs Ford a modest rose garden. Today he could be called an environmentalist who was supportive of "Wilding" the landscape. I wonder if he had any contact with indigenous tribes. Such a prophetic voice. Thank You so much Sue!!!! ♥
I love these videos you make about different garden personalities from the past... very informative and interesting, full of inside knowledge and beautiful views 🙂
So interesting! Thank you sharing your knowledge of what I would now call an environmentalist. His message about the importance of the natural environment holds true today. We both live in SE Michigan, I in Ann Arbor. We see the battle between urban expansion and nature continues. The restorative power of natural areas is real.
As a resident in SE Michigan, I found this story fascinating! It’s been along time since I have visited that Estate. It’s definitely on my bucket list for the summer. Thank you!
Thanks for watching. I bought a book written by Jens Jensen called Siftings published by the Johns Hopkins University Press Baltimore and London which is a short memoir. I also researched the online archives at the University of Michigan and the Henry Ford. The archives contain landscape plans and papers. He is an interesting character.
Hi Sue, this was so interesting! Thanks for taking the time to put this together. It has kind of sparked a new idea for me; that being to make it a point in my lifetime to travel with the sole/main purpose of visiting famous gardens and learning the history behind them. Much appreciated! ❣ Angela
Interesting how the fight for natural open space is still or even more important today. Why is natural beauty considered a novelty- I don’t understand .
🤍🩵💙 I love the natural green spaces that he had created around the Estate. I’ve been to the Frank Lloyd Wright Museum in southern Wisconsin, and love his natural green spaces he built around his homes he built. But had never heard of this man Jens Jensen.
I just recently found your channel! I love how you mix gardening with history. I’ve already bought one of the books about a gardener that you did a video on and am enjoying it immensely. And your narration is very easy to listen to 🌿🪻
