The Cognitive Science Behind Repeating Mistakes

- Being constantly late, losing your phone, spending too much money, dating the same inadvisable people-these are all errors that human beings make over and over again. But it has more to do with how the brain is wired than with a lack of discipline. In attempting to understand where we went wrong, our brains create “mistake pathways,” ruts that we get into when we try not to make another misstep. In this short video, staff writer Olga Khazan explains the psychological reasons why it’s so hard not to keep repeating mistakes.

I think the issue here is that dwelling too much on the mistake puts you back in the mindset you had when you made the mistake. So you have to recognize the next time you act and then do the thing much differently, almost as if you were another person or at least a new person.
I see it as doing the actions in a different way, focusing on what we want, but doing it differently.
what if we don't dwell on the mistake, but end up doing the same mistake or making another one?
@@_laifishardisntit_1379 Then maybe you're not dwelling on the mistake enough, the key I think is not to dwell on it _too_ much but just enough to be aware that it's the kind of mistake you've made in the past and so have to be vigilant. Ultimately you want to dwell on the correct action you're going for, rather than the mistake you used to make. Visualizing yourself acting correctly in every detail might help as well.
@@neththom999 can you give an example of how you would put this into practice when the mistake you're making is procrastinating for example?
@@Jo-fs5 I guess you could pay attention to the kinds of things you do to procrastinate and then visualize yourself becoming aware and then choosing to do the thing you know you need to do instead. Like if youtube is where you tend to procrastinate then visualize yourself being on youtube and recognizing that you should be doing another thing and then moving over to that thing. By doing this you're dwelling on the mistake and correcting it ahead of time.
This video started out great and at the end I'm left with unanswered questions...
Me too.
the answer is to just keep going
By dwelling, you’re wasting time not doing better. I think that’s the gist of the ending in my view. 🤷♂️
I think is too focus in what you want on the future, instead of learnibg from your mistakes.
Remember your choices, not your mistakes
Part of the reason why I make mistakes are because I never stop comparing myself to the people on the other side, It always seems to me that the other side is greener and so I try to be like that and end up making mistakes.. I am never satisfied with what I actually have.
I have changed my senior year subjects for like 3 times now and I feel like I was ok with the 2nd time subjects..
I’m constantly late and get continuously lost, I can’t judge when to leave the house 🤷♀️
I end up obnoxiously early because I paranoid of being late
😭😭😭I thought I was the only one
Why the reupload?
There was a mistake in the original. I get it!
Guilty as charged ;)
I'm not sure not learning from your mistakes actually helps with not repeating those mistakes.
When we get used to the consequences of mistakes. When the consequences bother us no more.
Watching UA-cam videos about repeating mistakes, instead of learning for my test is a mistake I keep repeating to.

People tend to do small mistakes with small consquences over and over again. So small mistakes don't have a big impact on our life that's why we tend to do them again.
People do one or two big mistakes in their life with huge consquences.
i make a lot of small mistakes and I dwell on them instead of learning how to keep myself from making them.
Problematically, small mistakes are still really intense at some times, being that one little block that takes down the entire tower, or the inmense amount of them makes the problem stack up into a big one
so paradoxically, maybe repeating some mistakes may actually change things. but this might apply to more technical mistakes like those shown in the vid
"We dont make mistakes, just happy little accidents" -Bob ross
If only...
Yeah Bob Ross wouldn't exactly be a decent health care worker 💖
I guess it depends on what kind of mistake.😂
Solution from ABV video 1) think about future 2) don't try to learn anything from mistake that will reduce frustrations 👍
I been playing DMC4 for 2 months and I still keep doing the same mistakes whenever I try to do air combos what the hell idk how I'm supposed to get rid of it
What happens if mistakes never existed? If people can do things in one shot, in one attempt, no do overs?
There would not be any reflections on how people make mistakes anymore…
If so everyone in this world would be successful and happy, which practically isn't possible...
This video is a complete miss.
If we want to fix a recurrent mistake, we need to have a clear understanding of what behavioural pattern is causing it. This usually requires loads of introspection that can sometimes reveal truths about ourselves that we are not ready to confront. Some people might need the assistance of a good therapist or coach to deal with it.
So, we definitely need to look at our past mistakes to learn from them but in a very analytical way.
I just had my math midterm. I usually get 95%. I got an 80% on the midterm. All my mistakes were very silly, how do I prevent that?
I think the grade in math are based like 60% on your mastery/understandment of the different math concepts and 40% on doing no mistakes a long the way during tests. For me i used different systems, thinking approaches to capture all possible mistakes during a question. You have to solve the problem in a way that reduce the number of failure probabilities. And also think through, your calculations and be very precise.
Oh my gosh I do that all the time! Did you ever find out how to not do it anymore?
@@sacapuntasfregerio4274 two years bro wow….. I aced my last math exam and I’m about to graduate, I made that comment when I was in the 9/10 grade ish but yeah. Just a confidence thing really, if you in thinking it’s hard then it’ll be hard. Good luck champ!
@@eddie0415 thanks for the advice Eddie
give me back my 3mins
As someone who fixes mistakes somewhat fast how do I get less mad at people making the same mistakes again and again? Or is it better to walk away?
Oooooo I love this video
Thank you ❤️❤️
Thank you for the video. I am feeling down right now.
Always thought history class was a bad idea
wow the mistake pathway thing is so real...I knew it was happening but now I have a name for it.
Always do mistakes while giving exams... sometimes forget to write regestration no, centre code...This time i even lost my admit card 🤣
At this point it dosent matter if you learn from them you will make that mistake again and again I make mistakes all the time at work not because of anyone else because of me as a person and they are simple things two that are the easiest tasks and turn them into projects because I’m afraid of doing it wrong
Hmmmm.. What's the solution... No definitive solution given
I keep doing the same mistakes when watching UA-cam. For example, I know this video doesn't have the answer but I watch it anyway.
learning from mistakes give you the experience to improve that's what people believe. but this study maybe work out for trying to remember things or changing habits
the only reason I've watch this vidoe is beacuse I was looking for an ansewer to why I sometimes even repeat my stupid mistake even doe when I also punish myself about making it or reapating it such as forgetting to set an alarm for tommorow morning.
I messed up at my job. This is not a one time thing. It was a series of mistakes and I was not able to cope up with my backlogs. I can't seem to focus. I keep on procastinating. I don't know what is wrong with me. I got overwhelmed with all the work assigned to me and I just got paralyzed. I was not able to work efficiently. Now, I'm really just waiting to be fired, suspended or worse...sued.
0:22 "Spending money... on stupid things..." as his friend smokes a cigarette. Brilliant.
lol
This is why I think Narcotic Anonymous and Alcoholic Anonymous is actually a really bad solution to dependance... It makes your life revolves even more around your addiction instead of moving forward in life! You should make your life revolve around a healthy alternative! Not focus even more on your mistakes!
my mistakes are substituting incorrectly on analysis ii
This video seemed to oversimplify the entire concept of making "mistakes".
She crushed even hopes like slowing
So in shellnut: Don't think about what you did wrong, think about how to do it right...?
When are mistakes one too many is the question?
Depends on what you allow, some people stay in whole marriages/friend groups/families wanting their so/family members/friends to change!!!!
Look how long it takes yourself to change, what makes you think change in another is going to happen overnight? Question is how long will you be willing to wait? Some people wait a whole lifetime! What kind of substance are you on for you to think this??!
Big or small idc, after a while it’s a CHOICE!
I also don’t care if it’s water or blood, I will remove myself from the equation.
You carry on living your life in circles and have fun repeating the same mistakes with the same outcomes 😁
I’m a sucker for learning and growing, I can’t stay around kiddo behaviour and stagnating situations.
I'm looking for mistakes made by other people that don't include me being the recipient of the consequences.
wow!
**Jocko Willink entered the chat**
I've all the answers, I'm just not putting it into practice ...
Same here bro which makes it even worse!
When she said “I date the same asshole over and over again” I felt that...
Bc my intellect is dumb as fuck and can't decide anymore as I have repeated it so many times . its like brushing teeth in the morning.
That's something different. Let's see if it works . 🤞
Is she an actress? Her face looks so familiar
2:57 ? why did I watch this video
Is not mistake is just that as humans we lack certain skills
Dammed if you do. Dammed if you don't. Why bother.
You didn't teach me anything sorry that did not help I guess you could have just had a picture of don't think about the past only focus on the future and it would have saved me three minutes and 4 Seconds Of My Life.
But I will take the advice thank you
She almost looks like pam from The Office

*What? Being constantly late is not a mistake... there is nothing wrong about it, its just a poor habit. Losing your phone is a memory issue, again not a mistake. Spending too much money is not wrong or an error, its poor self control. Dating the same types of people is again not wrong just because the outcome is often the same, its a shallow like. A mistake is getting a word misspelled, incorrectly identifying someone, or going down the wrong street. People rarely repeat mistakes but they do repeat making bad decisions. Who is behind this nonsensical video??*
yes, thank you for taking the time to explain

We're not going to talk about repeat offenders in the justice system? What's the scientific reason so many criminals never learn?
I think mistakes, errors are really mistaken in society, nature, science, and technology.
At 0.30 was not a mistake.
That nice chick is the one who will blame “all” men. So lesson to learn is stop blaming men for your bad choices and fucked up experiences.
The only thing I could focus on the whole video is how attractive she is...

Bad philosophy. Valuing the intentions more than the outcomes.
I am so f dumb- like I just always speak before I think, but then that’ll take 5 minutes. I always make such dumb mistakes.. and here I am trying to do better, because I regret everything I did…. I wish I thought more 🫠
