    Interesting video!
    That was interesting they predicted your most recent Scandinavian ancestor came from the same generation as your most recent French and German ancestor despite you only having 2% Scandinavian compared to nearly 40% French and German. It makes me more curious about what kinds of methods 23andMe use to come up with their timeline estimates.
    I also find the regions fun, although was a little disappointed I didn’t get any for France and Germany despite having a small amount of that ethnicity in my estimate and being able to trace a few different branches of my family back to Germanic Europe over the past 250-300 years odd. It would be really great to see them go beyond the 200 year window and try to identify regions going a little further back in time.

    Thank you for uploading this video it was very useful. I have difficulty with the timeline given to people who have lived in the Caribbean for hundreds of years being identified inaccurately as one or more ancestors living in Africa within 100 years. This is so wrong. I also think there is no way of changing it so for me it is big problem. If the location is wrong it is somewhat false information.

    • @YourDNAGuide

      Yes, timing IS tricky. I hope that someday we will be able to interact with the tool to tell it what we have documented and it can adjust accordingly. Someday!

    I am interested in the time line of these results. My daughter in law is from northern Japan. 23andme and Ancestry both say she is from southern Japan. I checked with a cousin and his results show he's from northern Japan. I checked the time line and it shows 1920 to 1950. So is she from southern Japan and the whole family has migrated north recently, maybe during WW2? Or is this really pointing to a date way back in the 1800's? She does have one 3rd cousin from Okinawa but no idea how they are connected.

    • @YourDNAGuide
      @YourDNAGuide  2 роки тому

      Timing is a HUGE factor, you are right to be considering it. I am glad you see the 23andMe timeline which tries to help you estimate when. However, the technology that 23andMe uses isn't sensitive enough to detect a migration from south to north during the last 100 years. More likely than not, it is pointing to a date further back when her family came north.
      Now, a key piece of information is really in the cousin. The question is if the cousin's DNA signal is coming from their shared heritage, or if it is from the other side of his family. Or, there is always the possibility that she is actually from the north, even way back, but for some reason the test is getting it wrong. These are just estimates after all. I think it would be interesting to have more family members tested. More data will tell a more complete story.

      @@YourDNAGuide Unfortunately she is adopted. Another 3rd cousin who might be on the fathers side says they are from the most northerly island. So to me something is off somewhere. Now I have found paperwork showing the maternal grandparents bought a home in their small village in 1948. I would think one of them was likely from there to live there. I went there two years ago and its maybe 150 people living there. I feel the family has roots there, but at the same time in 1880 the main city of Aomori was only 20,000 people. So I think there was a lot of people who moved in.
      So...are the test result pointing us in the right direction or are they way off in time? Or are they sketchy in accuracy?
      Oh the cousin who shows he from the north, no idea how he is related, other than he is a cousin and his ancestry composition show Aomori prefecture.

      @@alanheadrick7997 think of the ethnicity results as something you hold in the back of your mind as you are researching each individual match. In the end, it is the matches that lead to to names and places that leads you to records that leads you to the specific names and places that are your daughter-in-law's close family. If you are looking at small towns, you may also be dealing with endogamy (which could make your matches appear closer than they really are). In the end, it is very difficult to solve an adoption case if you don't have matches sharing more than 200 cM. You may want to try my free finding a birth parent resource to get you started in analyzing your matches: www.yourdnaguide.com/dna-birth-family.

    Thanks Diahan for doing this video! Regarding Chromosome Painting - I'm finding that (on 23nMe), Paternal and Maternal pairs are shown for each chromosome but the actual (ethnicity) inherited DNA (from Dad's side or Mom's side) is "switching back and forth" (across the presented pairs). Why would 23nMe do this? It's not helpful (at all) to think that I'm looking at my Mom's half of a DNA chromosome only to then run into a signature which could (most likely) only be from my Dad's side of the inheritance, nested ON MY Mom's SIDE of the pair. Do you agree with what I'm noticing? If so, what can be done to get 23nMe to fix this? When you pull up and compare (line by line / chromosome by chromosome) 23nMe's provided (painted) results to the painted output of (a different *FTDNA* testing company) this issue can clearly be identified. My sense is that the approach of only one of these two companies can be correct. On the other hand, perhaps 23nMe is "spot-on" and the issue is with FTDNA? In either case, what are your thoughts regarding what I've noticed? Keep up the great work! Thanks again for doing the video!

    • @YourDNAGuide
      @YourDNAGuide  2 роки тому +1

      Good observation. You are exactly right in what you are seeing. While they do try to get all your mom's DNA on one and all your dad's on another (a process called "phasing") it doesn't always work perfectly. They do their analysis in what they call "windows" so what you are seeing is the windows swapping sides. But do keep in mind, that the two lines you see for chromosome 3, where your dad's line is on top and your mom's on the bottom, may be switched in chromosome 4 (mom's line on top, dad's line on bottom). So if that is what you are seeing, as opposed to switching within each one, that that is TOTALLY fine. I think you might like this article from 23andMe www.23andme.com/ancestry-composition-guide/.
      FTDNA is employing a similar technique, but their populations are much more rudimentary than 23andMe, so the analysis is also more simple.

    The recent ancestor locations are more accurate, because 23andme doesn't search for single-nucliotid polymorphisms. They are looking for shared DNA-Segments in these populations.

But I'm wondering is there a way to tell how much German I am, how much, Swiss I am and how much French I am or is it just telling me I'm from that general area pretty strongly also it says highly likely on Brittish but only likely on German etc which is wierd because it says I'm mostly that would love to know what you think

      If you keep clicking on each percentage it will break down as far as possible. So, clicking on that 51% and it should expand out to show you more details about that category. If it doesn't, that means that they aren't yet sure how much belongs in each category.

    I hope you can respond to this but I took the 23andme DNA test to find out I’m 26% British and Irish, it says that it’s mainly from the UK and then it says the other match is Ireland. Is the British and Irish DNA combined to create 26%? Or.. is the DNA 26% British? I’m a little confused

    • @YourDNAGuide
      @YourDNAGuide  4 роки тому +2

      So the category itself is "British and Irish" which means 26% your DNA is associating you with that area of the world. When you click on that category to get more information, it is telling you about the fancy math they use to put you in those categories. It shows you the smaller places within the category and tells you how likely it is that this 26% (or a part of it) you see is actually from this smaller place. So if it says "highly likely" next to the Irish category and only "likely" next to the British category, well, that just means they think your signal is stronger in Ireland. But honestly, the way the math works, that 26% could still be all British. It's about probabilities. The short of it is this: they are confident that 26ish percent of you is from the general area of the world we call "British and Irish." But exactly where within that area is more difficult to pin down with complete accuracy.

    Hi I wanted to know how accurate are your haplogroup predictor

    • @YourDNAGuide
      @YourDNAGuide  3 роки тому +2

      The haplogroups at 23andMe aren't "predicted" per se. Meaning that they do test hundreds of mtDNA and YDNA values and tell you your haplogroup based on those values. Now, the haplogroup you get may not be your FINAL haplogroup, as they may not have tested all of the necessary values to find that FINAL group. But the group you have is accurate in that whatever you do have will be in the same family as your final group. So, if you are in mtDNA haplogroup H2, you will stay in H2. I hope that makes sense.

    So, my DNA results tell me I have highly likely matches with the Bulgarian and Greek regions, and also possible matches with regions from Romania.
    My grandmother always told me that she is Albanian. She also was able to speak the Albanian language. But is don't have any matches with the Albanian regions (it says it is "Not detected"). Could it be that my grandmother isn't Albanian but only lived close to Albania to be able to speak Albanian? Could my ancestors have been Albanian immigrants from before 200 years ago?
    Also, are these references from the locations, or are they references to the cultures? I don't really understand it

    • @YourDNAGuide

      All excellent questions.
      All of these percentages are based on reference populations. So if your grandmother's specific mix of Albanian wasn't detected in this test, it doesn't mean she wasn't Albanian. It just means that she didn't match the genetic signature of the current 23andMe Albanian reference population. Did you see this video of mine? It might help. ua-cam.com/video/G-Wgi0XsyWw/v-deo.html

  • @LMan86
    @LMan86 2 роки тому

    If you’re saying the percentages “may not be completely precise” then why the heck do these DNA testing companies advertise the percentage thing for your ethnicity in the first place? And why are they not accurate anyway? They get the information by studying your saliva in a lab. They spend weeks on it. I’m annoyed cause i just did a DNA test with 23andMe and got 51% Filipino. I know my mother is from the Philippines but if you are saying they aren’t precise then how close are they to being correct at least? What is their accuracy with ethnicity estimates?

    • @YourDNAGuide
      @YourDNAGuide  2 роки тому +1

      It can be frustrating to try to figure out.
      There are a lot of explanations I could give you, but I think it is best if you just think about the word estimate. These are ethnicity estimates. So when you estimate how much it will be to fill up your car with gas, you will take into account things like the size of your car, how full your tank currently is, and the price of gas. You won't be able to determine the actual exact amount you will spend down to the last penny, but you can get pretty close. That's really what this science is all about. It is giving you estimates that are very close to the actual amounts, most of the time.

    • @LMan86
      @LMan86 2 роки тому

      So since my result said i’m 51.0% Filipino and 48.4% European. Is this pretty close then to what my actual ethnicity is? I talked to 23andMe and they reassured me that they only send the results once they pass the lab and they only pass the lab if they are 98.5% accurate or more. Anything below the 98.5% threshhold fails and has to be restested.
      23andme got a lot of things right about specific areas my ancestors originated from.
