My father Lou Block owned Prized as part of the Clover Racing Stables syndicate. I was in the Winner’s Circle for this race. I was 9 years old. Earlier that year we shocked Sunday Silence in the Swaps Stakes and won the Molson Million in Woodbine at Toronto. I got to go to the Winner’s Circle for those two. My happiest childhood memories.
Yes you're correct this was a masterful ride on Prized By Eddie D but there was another race at Santa Anita Racetrack by Prized and Eddie D Which was even more amazing. A couple of horses that I can remember in that Stakes race were ,"On the menu" and "Happy Toss' I believe it was a field of 9 and it was a mile and a quarter on the turf... Opening fractions were set by "On tthe menu" . On the turn for home Prized was behind On the menu in second by the time they got down to the 8th Pole Prized had dropped all the way back to last place which was 9th. In the stretch run On the menu tired and was passed by Happy Toss and believe it or not right before Happy Toss reached the finish line here comes Prized like an Express train passing everybody up and nosing out Happy Toss at the wire. in those years i had been to Hollywood Park and Santa Anita Park many times I also watched Today at San Anita which came out every race night and included all nine races of the day. And I have never seen any horse win a race the same way Prized did that day. It was nothing short of AMAZING. 😢🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😢🎉🎉
I was at the race. One of the tellers I knew told me to bet on Prized. She said a high roller she knew had flown in to Hallandale (via MIA) just to bet on this horse. So I had him across the board.
Prized should have been the male turf champion for 1989 off this one grass race. Steinlen may have had a full campaign, but he should have been in THIS race, NOT the Mile. I believe you have to have a win at 1 1/2 miles or longer to be turf champion.
It's very obvious that you were not a Prized fan. Did you not hear what the track announcer said . " What a remarkable victory his first race on the grass and he wins the two million-dollar Breeders Cup Turf. This was a field of 14 which included at least two or three turf course champions and you said he was a good horse. Hahaha 😁 Criminal Type was a good horse and he beat both Sunday Silence and Easy Goer in two different Stakes races. Besidet it's a fact that S .S and E G mostly raced in many races with very limited amount of horses. 6 or less.Why werent they in araces against ,John Henry ,. Personal Ensign, Winnig Colors, Summer Squall or Flawlessly. They raced mostly against losers and ended up having very short careers. ,Now those are champions. 😮😅
@@eddiecorrea5175 New York was the only state in the entire USA during those days that prohibited all drugs. When S.S. had to race drug-free without all drugs, Easy Goer destroyed S.S. Prized did beat S.S. but S.S. carried 6 pounds more than Prized. When Prized had to race drug-free without all drugs, Easy Goer crushed Prized by 25 lengths in the JC Gold Cup. Easy Goer carried 7 pounds more than Criminal Type. S.S. carried 5 pounds more than Criminal Type. And both Hall of Fame Champions Easy Goer and S.S. were far superior to all of them. E.G. won 12 stakes, 9 G1 wins at 7f, 1 mile, 1 1/8m, 1 1/4m & 1 1/2m, & ran some of the fastest races ever run at all distances; S.S. won 6 G1 races at 1 1/8m to 1 1/4m. John Henry was already retired long before; Personal Ensign was already retired & ran all but 1 of her races vs females; Winning Colors was a 4 & 5 year old female running only against females the years of E.G. & SS, but Risen Star crushed her twice; Summer Squall was a drug-dependent lasix-dependent 3 yr old who ran only against 3 yr olds the year that E.G. & S.S. were older horses, but Summer Squall could not run without drugs, plus he only won 2 G1 races his whole career; & E.G. & S.S. were both retired long before the drug-dependent lasix-dependent Flawlessly ran, & she could not run without drugs, & only ran against females on grass. And both Hall of Fame Champions Easy Goer and S.S. were far superior to all of them.

Prized was a good horse. Prized beat Sunday Silence in the G2 Swaps Stakes. Easy Goer beat Prized by over 20 lengths in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup.
