Really? You're THAT confident with all those rubber belts, capacitors, cogs, gears, integrated circuit board (ICB) electronic "traces," resistors, wires and the like LOL? I myself am not a repairer. Each time I see the images or video footage of the interior of boomboxes, I am by turns intrigued and daunted by all those parts. (Plenty of those images are on fan websites like BoomBoxery.com and Stereo2Go.com. They are typically repair images from "technically inclined" members.) Your statement about cassette-deck mechanisms not being daunting contraptions is encouraging. Let me ask: have you ever repaired any auto-reverse cassette decks so they can play, record (quite important), rewind and fast-forward at the right speed? Even more challenging: have you ever successfully repaired the front-loading auto-reverse tape deck of a Sanyo boombox with a top-mounted CD player? That's something I think I need help with. More plainly put, how much would it cost me for you to repair such a device for me?
@@uzodinman358 Depends what the problem is. Usually, the parts that cause problems can be considered as "consumables" such as drive belts and the rubber tyres on idler wheels. Occasionally you'll find a nylon gear wheel has stripped it's teeth. New spares generally aren't available but sometimes a part from a scrap donor machine can be made to fit and work. I've done that sort of thing more than once. I'm not in the business of doing paid repairs. I used to do a few as a sideline but gave it up because people are opportunists. They'll have a repair done and then six months later when an unrelated fault occurs they expect it to be fixed free of charge because I obviously didn't do a proper job first time round! I'm not saying you'd pull such a stunt but that's why I gave up. Now I just do my own stuff as a hobby. There's a forum which might be able to help you. It's called the UK Vintage radio repair and restoration forum, generally known as UKVRR. They can give you guidance to do your own repairs or if you're not confident about thàt they can put you in touch with someone who can do the repair. Of course, being a UK based forum, most members are from the UK but they have members overseas too. Might be worth a look. Alternatively, you may be able to search for a forum in your area/country.
@@uzodinman358 Oh god, you're one of those. I restore Marantz units for a living and all the vintage cassettes I encounter had rotten belts, that's it. Rarely caps in cassettes are out its values like amps are. Same with portable cassettes too, mostly belts
That construction, speakers powered by metal hangers and cable hidden in speaker under cover that's a next level engineering.. salute to Sony engineers!
I was born in ‘81, and turned 40 two weeks ago. Some older people say that I’m too young to remember the 80s. My memory goes back to 1983. I consider myself an 80s & early 90s kid. But I grew up during the 90s. I am definitely more of a GenXer than a millennial.
If again company started manufacturing this master piece, I think people will buy definately, so beautiful. Cassett are also should be available nowdays.
My father bought exactly one of this in Amsterdam when we were on a trip in Europe in summer 1984. We brougth that newest exclusive SONY gigantic Boombox then to New York City where I recorded all the music I could in a 5 Cassettes (98.7 kiss fm Mastermix) and finally arrived home in Bogota, Colombia. The problems which happened in that Tape deck mechanism can be solved by yourself...Just open it and carefully dismantle the mechanism out and go through it's working mode several times till you find out the fault occurred in it...And finally you will be happy and satisfy with your own repair which gives you confidence in that repairing field...Also make that broken plastic "lock clip" from any suitable plastic pieces using small hack saw, files and glue...Best wishes...!!!
Ooh, those days of the boom boxes... As a kid of the 80's, i do remember that 3 cops arrested an Breakdancer. 1 cop for the breakdancer and 2 cops for carrying his boombox :P
Too late. If you scroll down in this "Comments" thread, you'll see that, around October 2018, the UA-cam member Robert Jacoby compared his own "(smaller) similar era Sony boombox with the same issue" to this Sony CFS-88S. He asked this uploader, 80's Boombox Collector, if he ever solved the problem of the non-playing audiocassette deck of this magnificent-looking machine. This video uploader replied that, no, he sold the Sony CFS-88S without solving the problem. (He did indirectly suggest that people seeking help with repairing the tape decks of boomboxes like this should try finding that help on the website BoomBoxery.com. In a reply to another member -- around July 3, 2019 -- this uploader stated that the cassette-deck mechanism of this stereo is "complicated," further implying his reason for selling it.)
Sony used to have some top notch industrial design in its older products. Modern Sony may not have the same magic it used to, but every now and then they’ll put something out that’s classic Sony and there’s a good chance it’s only sold in Japan.
Did you ever figure out what was making the tape deck stop playing after a few seconds? I have a (smaller) similar era Sony boombox with the same issue. I think it’s the motor but I haven’t found a replacement and I’m weary of the $80 ones that claim to be universal on eBay
Brilliant piece of gear! Amazing boombox, old school in it's best! I love vintage electronics, it was built by people for people. Quality abounds!!! Thanks for sharing! Sub an' like from me. All the problems with tape transport section are easy to fix. A plain replacement of idlers and belts will solve most of the problems.
Thanks for the post! Yeah this video was made a few years ago, when I was clueless about tape decks, so I made that video to show to interested buyers.
@@80s_Boombox_Collector I tried wd40 electronic spray. but I'll try what you mentioned. I just get static noise, but nothing lights up and of course no music.
Nice and rare unit. I can remember the sound was a little flat (like the casing and no bass port) and the mid tones dominate, there is no knob to change the middle tones. That's why I didn't bought it.
10 D cells. Probably X 5 for 6 hours at max volume. So a day at the beach would cost a fortune. And people knew that. Hell, in the old days, I went to beach parties where the DJs just had regular home amps and speakers but with a 120v gas power generator. Probably cheaper.
Tape decks are easy to fix. That one has a stuck autostop clutch and it probably needs new belts too. Not a biggie.

the problem is the speaker drivers are far too big for those relatively tiny enclosures

I think these were the same speakers that were used in the Sony CFS-99
I think so too. They need more bass.
I prefer CFS-99 over CFS-88 due to manual record levels.
