- Director Mike Hodges’ Get Carter is the quintessential hard-boiled British crime film. Remarkably influential, it paved the way for like-minded fare such as The Long Good Friday and Mona Lisa. Michael Caine plays Jack Carter, a ruthless London mobster who travels back to his Newcastle hometown to investigate the death of his brother… and woe betide anyone who stands in the way of this cooly efficient killer. The film underperformed at the box office due to poor promotion but is now recognized as one of the finest thrillers of the decade. MGM was fond of blaxploitation remakes, and George Armitage’s 1972 Hit Man borrows a lot from Get Carter, but it wasn’t until 2000 that an actual remake starred Sylvester Stallone, to dismal effect.

This movie is pure class.
Great review.
The greatest British gangster film, and Michael Claine's greatest performance.
So many quotable lines, so many iconic scenes and locations.
RIP Tony Beckley, Ian Hendry, John Osborne, Rosemary Dunham, George Sewell, Brian Mosley, Glyn Edwards, Bernard Hepton and John Bindon.
NOT swinging London, being razed to the ground Newcastle.
To really understand why this film is like it is, it helps to know that the director came out of the Mass Observation department. He had spent a lot of time filming the UK population at a non personal level. Looking for what was informative or meaningful in city streets, along train tracks, etc....He threw so much of what he saw around Newcastle into the film, using the skills he'd honed in his Mass Observation film unit years, it is really unique looking.
Mike Hodges I believe.
He made Croupier in the 90s, which became a surprise hit in the (art house) cinemas in the US.
The book from which the film is drawn is extremely extremely different.
Lehane is right about British crime films. They don't glamourise crime. Nor should they. Most criminals are so so SO boring. They know nothing, think about nothing, and just talk in a stupid fashion about dumb violent things. Like the Soprano family. You'd shoot yourself if you had to listen to these people for more than a few hours.
Mona Lisa was pretty grim.
Villain is too, but more like Get Carter in flavour.
Man, that soundtrack is just chilling. One of my favorite gangster films of all time and probably the second best British gangster film made...after "The Long Good Friday."

This man is one of my all time favourite writers.
Michael Connelly and Dennis Lehane are two of my most favorite authors. I like to believe that their works influence some of my own writing.
Its a classic, from the the moment the intro and he takes the train to Newcastle and the theme kicks in.
I bought this on DVD in 2004. Kind of fun Lehane saw it around that time too.
Jack Carter is one of the greatest anti-heroes in movie history. Hard boiled to the nth degree.
A regular Harry Brown.
A black diamond made from Newcastle coal. Perfect music. "Piss holes in the snow". This is a gangster movie that stabs you in the heart while it stares you right in the face.
This is the most quotable of all the TFHs I've watched. Well done, Mr Lahane.
I think the Newcastle landscape adds to the grit, big time.
loved this film, something not everyone will apricate is the stark contrast between this film caine is too the italian job. to understand the get carter darkness you need to watch the italian job first. the two films are a million miles apart. its like the italian job was full of the swinging 60s carefree and happy, get carter is like thay forsaw the 70s eara, the hang over from the 60s' the real face of crime, the real price for free love and the sexal reverlution. the dark side of what would emerge from the happy 60s.
Caine looks 3D in a 2D world in this film. Comes across as a real force of nature. Best thing he ever did for my money.
This film along with the wicker man are the two best british films of the 1970s. Caines best performance by a mile

This is a perfect and candid look at British society. British cities and people generally have a different kind of intellect and outlook that is unique to the uk

If Newcastle is Carter’s home town, why doesn’t he speak like it is? Michael Caine was pretty good in the role, just a shame he couldn’t do a geordie accent.

I think there are two American remakes: Get Carter with Sylvester Stallone and Hitman with Bernie Casey, so which one aren't we talking about? Also, I'm curious if Malachi Thorne is the narrator on both the American and British trailers. For me, the pivotal moment in the movie is "Her name is Carter. Carter. That's my name!" What I really like about this movie is that doesn't become a detective or, as you alluded to, a good guy over the course of looking into his brother's death. He remains true to his character; he's a thug looking into his brother's death.

Did Michael Caine actually have any scenes with Britt Ekland? Or did they just talk on the phone?
They were part of the group watching films at the start of the movie. They "touched eyes" but did not speak.
A brilliant film about some dreadful people.
The only survivors were Doreen, Con, Sid and Gerald.
Everyone else was killed, maimed or ruined.
A brilliant cast, particularly Ian Hendry, Rosemary Dunham and Geraldine Moffatt.
Britt Ekland is not an actress, but her part was memorable nonetheless.
Bryan Mosley was very good as Brumby, and Alun Armstrong was outstanding.
Newcastle is awesome.
The Yanks botched the remake of this big time.

Such a great film. Just beats LGF for me.
If Carter is supposed to be coming back to his 'home town', where's the Geordie accent? It's the only thing that doesn't click for me in what's otherwise a great film.
Dramatic license... Iain Hendry steals the show IMHO. Perhaps he could have played the lead in a more 'authentic' way. Would love to have seen that, one of the most underrated actors of all time.
'Ian Hendry steals the show..' I would love to hear your reasons behind this bizarre claim. It would be far more believable if you said that John Osbourne (Kinnear) or even Alun Armstrong (Keith) stole the film - but in truth, this was one of Michael Caine's finest performances and without doubt, he was superb and the standout actor in this classic British gangster film!
Interestingly, in real life Ian Hendry deeply resented and disliked Michael Caine and was obsessively jealous of his fame and success as an actor. Indeed, this unhealthy envy towards Caine acted as a trigger for Hendry's own self-destruction and was in no small way responsible for his alcoholism and early death.
Despite that and IMHO - Caine IS carter and it was totally his movie!

If he had done a Geordie accent people up there would have slated him, and took pains to point out where he would gone wrong. As it is the film is hero worshipped in the North East. I went to live in Durham in 2000, and by 2006 I sounded more Durham than Sheffield. Some people pick up accents I guess.
This trailers gives away the entire fuckin film.
Its realistic and gritty. Take goodfellas for ex.. Everyones handsome (ok. Not Pesci but u know what I'm getting at) . Look at Kinnear and his London boss and his lackeys. Not the most attractive of people. But this is how it most likely is in the underworld. Even the women look detestable. Newcastle looked horrid in 1973. In the North there's a lot of rain and clouds. And there used to be a lotta mining too from the looks of it. All this sets Get Carter apart from the atypical gangster movie one is accustomed to watching.
