Many, many thanks to Rand and Pete for this episode. Since my CD budget for January is already over the top from other SoT shows, ordered Mainhorse and Refugee and looking forward to having those. Listened to some of Mainhorse based on an previouis SoT episode. Always appreciate Rand's appearances on SoT and particularly these one on one shows with Pete. Thanks again, gents.

The Refugee album was the first album I ever bought with my own money, and they were the first concert I went to - Manchester 1974.
Still love that album and play it regularly. Love Relayer too, but I was gutted when he jumped ship to join Yes.

Pateick Moraz "[]" was released in Nov 1975, 13 months before he was forced out of YES by Brian Lane, in December, 1976.
The ORCHESTRON was introduced on YES' 1974 RELAYER - 2 years before " []."
Patrick Moraz' 2nd solo album was " future memories" part one, a companion album to a BBC TV video presentation. It was released on British Import just before "out in the sun."

I saw him with Yes in 76, two tours with MB, the tour with Bill Bruford and met him on the Cruise to the Edge 2014. I have an album or two short of all his complete catalog. Thanks for covering this.

He's got a somewhat (to me) strange catalog. Some albums are straight classical, others sound like soundtracks (even when they're not) and are mixed in with other/pretty good records. I like his music the most when he mixes it with pop/rock or goes all-out fusion (like on The Story Of I, wish he'd done a lot more of that). Also more records with Yes would've been great

I learned about Patrick Moraz less than a week before this aired during a binge discogs digging session. I'm a DJ and enamored with the song "Realization" from PM's self titled album and plan to play it during a cosmic set.

    RELAYER
My #1 album of all time-
I bought RELAYER on the USA release date : December 5, 1974 - also my 19th birthday!
My first YES concert was the First part of the 2 year RELAYER tour December 14,1974. I saw 2 more shows in 1975, and the BIG YES show at JFK PHILADELPHIA, June 12, 1976 130,000 fans in attendance.
According to Patrick, who I talked to at a YESTIVAL at the Manhattan center in NYC, Patrick was pushed out of YES by Brian Lane. Lane managed Rick Wakeman, which was part of the impetus to replace Patrick.

Regarding Vangelis joining YES, I always thought Vangelis' "Heaven & Hell" paralleled the energy of "Relayer" in some ways. The keyboard playing is VERY fusion sounding. "So Long Ago, So Clear" works kind of like "Soon". They are both "the calm after the storm" so to speak!

Back in my teenage years in the mid to late 70's a friend of mine warned me off Relayer saying that its nothing like the Yes of CTTE, Fragile and Topographic Oceans, so I didnt get it until many years later only to realise I'd made a huge mistake in not getting hold of it earlier.
I've read loads of stuff about Moraz and his time in Yes and how they basically left him high and dry before getting Wakeman back in, and of Yes having to stop Moraz using the Minimoog pitch wheel too much. I do believe he had a lot more to do with the Going for the One album than is credited for , and there are bootlegs of Yes live in 75 where Jon sings snippets of Awaken - the High Vibration bit.
Cant argue with any of the choices made by either Rand or Pete though, however I tend more towards Out in the Sun over the Story of I. Also love his playing on Chris Squire's Fish out of Water and Steve Howe's Beginnings.

    1) Story Of I

A few albums not mentioned: two good piano albums, "Windows of Time" and "Resonance". The mid '80s Cinema Records album, "Human Interface" has good moments. I rarely play the self-titled third solo album, "Patrick Moraz" but it's better than "Timecode".
A few albums I have not heard yet: "Syrinx" and "Future Memories I and II". The latter I think comes from a live TV broadcast

The story of I is let down by its vocals but greatly enhanced by the Brazilian percussion. Pre-internet, it took me years to find out what a cuica was and how it's played. (It's the 'talking drum' sound) Nearly up there with Olias and Fish Out of Water. Relayer wins obvs.

@@shyshift He joined for the "Octave" tour and according to Moraz he had to do a lot of persuading to get the band members into the studio. Also, they took a long time recording their parts whereas Moraz said he did his parts in one take.

Soundtrack licensing is very odd Rand, it’s not like recording a rock album, there are a lot more rights issues involved and many labels don’t like to release soundtracks because they generally don’t sell well.

  • @Justin_Kipper
    @Justin_Kipper 3 роки тому

I've always appreciated Moraz, I even had the Mainhorse album. But it seems to me that he wasn't very appreciated by the big bands he was in. One studio album with Yes, and he was gone. Less and less for him to do with the Moody Blues as time went by, and that gig ends with a big lawsuit (trial footage from CourtTV is readily available on YT) in which the other members claim he was never a band member. Moraz seems like a nice guy, so I wonder what was up with all of this over the years.

Rand's a good panelist...I like Patrick Moraz & I have 4 of his solo albums. I also like his work with Yes a lot too (I have Relayer & Yes 50 Live), more than that of Wakeman for sure although some of his solo stuff ventures into overblown/too self important Wakeman territory. I don't have any of the Refugee albums or the collabs with Bruford so I can't rank those. I'm not really into the Moody Blues. To be honest this guy's work is spotty across the years, there's something that even when it clicks it doesn't, or he for some reason just moved on instead of sticking with it. I don't like his straight-up classical albums. So I don't really own that much of his music to rank, given my limited albums to choose from here's my ranking:
    1. Patrick Moraz/The Story Of I - what could've been if he stuck with this type of lineup & music...Some great fusion here, "Indoors", "Warmer Hands", "Rise And Fall". I can do without the vocals though
    2. Yes/Relayer - some nice fusiony tracks
    3. Mainhorse/Self-Titled - good record all around
    4. Patrick Moraz/Out In The Sun & Timecode - "Kabala", "Batucada Xxx", "Overload", "Life In The Underworld", "No Sleep Tonight" are good tracks
    5. Everything else that's Patrick Moraz Solo (and that I've heard): Live At Abbey Road, Windows Of Time, Human Interface, Change Of Space, The Geneva Tapes - "Late Night Run", "Beyond Binary", "Kaaru" & "One Day In June" are good
