      I'm an infj and I've noticed the same thing. For a long period of my life i would adjust to that when talking to people, because i could see how it brought peace. After getting fucked over a numerous amount of times. I finally said fuck it and stopped catering to their ego, went against my old ways and just started telling blunt truths. Much better this way if I'm being honest

      INFP here. I usually find a path downwards so that they understand, that I understand them, and I am them. When a connection happens, they will spill a huge load on me about everything. With this information, I pretend that I am them and manipulate their mind set in a way that they agree.
      What they do not know is I am bending their ideals into mine silently.
      *I am doing this for their own good of course :)*

    This is why I use the Socratic method to persuade people when I give advice. Ask them questions that allow them to see the logical inconsistency in whatever their conclusion is, then ask questions that lead them to the answer you wanted to say from the beginning. This way they feel they've arrived at the answer themselves. If they are having issues in a relationship, for example, ask them how they feel. What is causing those feelings. What they want in their relationship, then what changes could they make to achieve their wants. Instead of saying "You need to confront your SO and blah blah blah or else x will happen."

    • @alimo9625

      that is actually what I do and it works most of the time, but with some people it gets really frustrating because they give wrong answers even to the most basic questions and I have to constantly correct them, but at least is easier to correct them about more basic questions because the logic/answer is easier to understand.

    From my perspective, INTPs aren't the types to confront others and give advice, it's more something that's pushed on us by those around us, at which point it's not our fault when we give our honest opinions. I can't remember the last time I actually gave someone advice in an earnest way that wasn't provoked by them first. We shy away from leadership roles for a reason, whether that's because we're indifferent to such titles or we want people to exercise their own free will in life. There's also the added social barrier, where an INTP giving advice to another would mean building up the courage to actually speak to someone, which is a feat all its own.
    It's a lose-lose all around. If we initiate the conversation and give our advice, we're seen as a know it all or too aggressive in arguing our point, as it comes off as overconfidence and assurance. But if we're asked for advice, our honesty will fall back on us as we most likely won't agree with the other person's viewpoint and even if we tried to disagree respectfully, it could unintentionally come off as cold and rude. This whole "talking" thing isn't our best strength.

    • @JohnDoe-pd4jo
      @JohnDoe-pd4jo 2 роки тому

      I 100% ageee ISTPs are more likely to do so after getting frustrated. INTPs seem to avoid steeping on toes because they are in fairly perceptive and understand people, so they actively try and avoid stepping on toes. I’m an ISTP and have this same problem.

    It was nice to hear my thought process been brought to life through your speech of how to actually effectively influence and help people, rather than simply feed your ego of being the Smartest in the room (which leaves you alone and despised).

      I think this advice works better for emotional and personal issues. For example:
      Stupid person: "My wife never helps with household chores"
      What an INTP wants to say: "Your wife just drove you to the doctor, I see her working in your garden latest 3 times a week and you don't even know how to clean a bathroom but your bathroom is always clean."
      What actually works: "Oh hey why do you feel this way? Doesn't your wife do all the garden work?"
      Don't let anyone step on you at work. When a person steals your idea ones, don't help them again.Let them run into and open knife and save the day with your ideas.
      This is just a thought and very simplified examples

A while back a friend and I were discussing politics and he confessed he'd considered being a politician and asked if I would ever join him should he make that career move. INTP here, this was an excellent video and it makes a lot of sense. That being said, neckbeard and fedora mode activated. I'm not here to coddle people's fragile ego and let them think they came up with the answer on their own. Take my advice, give me my credit for figuring it out and thank me. Or don't, ruin your life and learn the hard way ✌

I'll try to apply to tactic of asking questions and using emotions to let them figure things out on their own.

    If there’s one thing the INTP can’t stand it’s ego power trips. Yes, they’ll be stubborn and refuse to cajole, cater to and otherwise baby someone who can only see things through the eyes of their self-referential ego. INTPs are about something larger than the ego that is stuck in group think. Their tactlessness definitely can bother some people but mostly feelers-not so much the thinkers. Though, there as well, many thinkers can’t think outside their own boxes. INTPs are free to go anywhere, a freedom they will never sacrifice.

    • @billbirkett7166
      @billbirkett7166 5 років тому +4

      I think it's quite ironic to see INTP's posting about 'self referential egos', when they themselves are some of the most melodramatic and ego-obsessed creatures in existence.

      @Dan Gingerich this 100%. Although I don't hate seeing the train coming. I hate not being able to get other people to see it. At the very least I can still avoid the train in my own life a decent amount of the time lol

    • @freedommascot
      @freedommascot 5 років тому +8

      Bill Birkett I do not see melodrama at all in the INTP. Yes they have egos but the difference is that they can happily deconstruct their ego in front of theirs and other’s eyes. The love of knowledge is key here, even though they can take pride in that just as others might take pride in other skills. Perhaps you’re thinking of another type because INTPs don’t really care much about what others think, they’re too busy working out models in their own head.

    • @Shinebakaaho
      @Shinebakaaho 5 років тому +2

      @Dan Gingerich It's not of my business. But I keep seeing patterns, so... Look, people are idiots and stupid people will do stupid thing (everyone is an idiot btw, but some people are just half idiots, most are complete). You are insecure. You keep seeing and mesuring yourself by others opinions or possible reactions about you. Don't. Since we always come out as arrogants anyways even in our best intentions, find out who you are (your opinions about yourself) and own it! Even if others see you in a bad way, you don't have to do the same, INTPs aren't made to be diplomats and politicians

    Thanks for this! So much to think about! Just the other day I was thinking about this and concluded that most people have the Not Invented Here Syndrome. I've often tried asking questions of individuals to get them to think, but it never seems to get anywhere, and I eventually lose my patience and go blunt. I'll have to learn to apply some empathy and sympathy to these situations, but I must admit that it's quite difficult to do so during a real-time conversation, because these traits aren't the strongest when you're in logic mode.

    You make such a great point about influencing people's opinions/decisions - that to give advice EFFECTIVELY, we need to help the recipient(s) incept the idea through their own logic. I learned a feedback framework as a manager at Abercrombie eons ago that I engrained broadly into my communication style. This has been crucial to my career success and strong interpersonal relationships (as someone who tests INTP).

    Assuming you are the smartest person in the room is not logical ( when the occupants are not especially known to you). Learning the basics of human psychology is logical if you want the best possible outcome for yourself and those you care about. Depending on the goals you seek, an INTP might even research how to dress and interact appropriately for a given setting or occasion! Looks and behavior are often learned, not instinctive 😉🧐 Also, I want to strongly dispute some of the assumptions put forth in the comments by other types...INTPs are capable of loving deeply and intensely, they just aren’t going to let you into their private passions! I love my family as much or more then many of the people shouting it from rooftops and splashing it all over social media!

    I learned this the hard way lol. My gf (INFP) would have issues that I would solve for her on a regular basis, however the problem that arose was that she began to devalue her own thought processes due to not being able to logically explain and defend her ideals, which naturally as you all versed in functions understand is not an INFPs strong suit. This caused a lot of psychological stress, and also manifested as a subconscious distaste with the idea of telling me anything. To cut this long story short this was one of the tactics I used to remedy some of these issues, offering knowledge in a way that she can use to form HER OWN thoughts rather then doing that for her.

    I sometimes like making people solve their own problems. I don’t tell them what they’re doing wrong and I don’t give out the answer. I force them to think about it in parallels. “What if?” Is a very lethal question to ask when it comes to advising because I at least know enough about people. People are selfish, arrogant, thoughtless, and lack empathy. So I help them fix the shattered mirror that contributes to their lack of reasoning and problem solving skills. It’s never A-B there are many unknown variables in between just waiting to be discovered. I love to find things. It makes me happy.

    Let's say my chosen subject is good, safe, driving excellence in theoretical knowledge only. Lots of people drive but who really wants to be told the right and proper way to drive? Most people have a general idea of how they should drive but can't actually be bothered to do it. So they certainly don't want someone telling them the perfect or optimal way to drive.
    For me the real choice is priority, which is more important to me? Either having people spew their off the cuff opinions over my years of research, or just shut the door and enjoy the freedom I have to totally indulge myself in my research. And who knows, one day, I might actually come up with something someone else wants to know!

    you really nailed this in my opinion - at least one INTP i know highly approves. the need to teach people to fish rather than hand them a plate of cod has not gone unnoticed. i think many INFPs like myself can identify with it too - i call it ”planting seeds” as opposed to ”giving advice”. people need to be guided towards their own truth and really own it for themselves in order to anchor it. and INxPs can act as guides on that journey. way too many metaphors but i think you get the picture!

    after thanksgiving my mom asked me how she could lose weight (i recently lost about 30 pounds). i took her on a frickin journey of all the different methods she could use to lose weight and then ended it all with some extremely basic and simple terms to follow. Such as "eating less will result in weight loss no matter what you do" and that she just has to be Consistent(tm.). She acted pumped and ready to start losing weight! ......Literally the next day i catch her binging tacobell to the face. This is the life of an INTP

I take my own advice in levels of priorities for the moment.. In this case, the high priority for my mother was losing weight. Unfortunately, people generally don't like being told the solution to their problems. They would rather completely ignore the advice of others until they feel like they have come up with the solution themselves. so therefore she instantly, within at least 12 hours of the conversation, decided not to listen to the advice she was so adamant about following.

    Most of the time, people are seeking approval, not opinion or truth.
    And it gets worse and worse with our society of "I'm the one looking the best !" contest.
    When an INTP seek approval for a truth, it's usually from at least 2 sources and from known competent people.
    In my case ( me be INTP ), I have the "fear to be an impostor". Don't know for other INTP... But it's a very big drive for any of my research an skill learning. It used to not be that prevalent, but the older I get the stronger the feeling is.

    Once there was a friend of my sister who got in a “fight” with his brother. The fight was through messages. The situation was tricky since it was a family matter, none of them was completely in the right. So I said he should write a thing back since it would be a small admittance of guilt, but also a good defense (also a good offense). If the fight would have escalated the family would try to be neutral. Because every would be on the defensive if that happen the family would be arguing more at his side since his brother will be on the offensive. He didn’t do it though.

I would never ask a question with "should I" though, like "should I leave you alone?" this makes people sometimes uncomfortable because they don't want to force you to anything.
      Anyway people who are close to you should also understand that this is hard for you and when they're being to judgemental they suck just as much with emotions as you.

    as an INTP I should say people usually think I want to be smartest person or some say I have to be always right but that is simply not true. I think the reason they think that is because I back up my ideas with logic an the don't want to or can't argue with that.

    Advice for INTP's.
    We're so naturally reclusive so reclusive in fact, we remove ourselves from any social interactions at all. Fine, this is who we are and that's fine. The mistake I think we sometimes make is in social functions like at work. We feel interested to help others with our ideas. Just remember these people think way less often of us than we do of them if, in fact, they ever think about us at all. What's the natural conclusion here? It's better to also remove yourself from our co-workers. I've always hated it, but the old adage of "Not to speak till spoken to." is a tenet we should abide by. Perhaps it's a negative behavior, living inside our own heads, but we'll all soon someday begin to realize that being disconnected is a reward in its own right.
    Sticking with your small group is the best of all advice. Otherwise treat all others with indifference. No, most people are not worth your time and no, they don't matter, nor does their opinion, nor does our opinion to them.
    It's much easier to be the observer. Chalk all social interactions as experiences we store inside our hard drive for our sociology thesis. I know most of us have an ideas notebook, put in there if you're not working on a thesis.
    Lastly, if you're are forced to talk to someone you're not close to, or feel so compelled to approach someone about a matter. Firstly, don't do it! What do we do best? We argue inside our own minds the best. It is better to argue inside our own heads first before we decide to take action. I think we should use this approach with people as well even at the cost of perfect timing. Let others approach you if possible is the best outcome in any social interaction. Don't accost people, be brief and to the point rather it is a joke you've been holding in, or a matter about work, we will fail at any type of small talk, so the less time the better.

    Erik hi! Your way makes a lot of sense but it would require a triple analysis in order to have no credit for findind the solution...
    Look, find solution to "Impossible to solve" problems is the easy part, stress is always about how to deliver it in a way humans wont get pissed . So we often accept the outcome and say things as they cross our minds and if people will be kind enough to listen maybe they wont get hit by that car over there...

    No matter what a person's problem is, my intial advice will consist of an impromptu, effortless, virtually seamless and irrefutable correlation/analogy based on completly unrelated experiences I've had within the last 48 hours, but ideally the example would come from a remarkably accurate transcript from a conversation I had earlier that same day and how that is exactly like something else I learned through an event from my childhood and how overcoming that obstacle ultimately made me th man I am today. If delivered effectively, it will undoubtedly establish credibility and prove they shouldn't be alarmed because obviously these things happen to all of us...

    INTP's are mostly driven by logic, which is fine, but they tend to ignore the shadow part, the ego, primitive drives, jealousy, etc. all elements that are more important than reason itself for most people in real life... Ignoring your shadow is the best way to let it possess you, but INTP's are not equiped to dive straight into it.
    I'd say INTP is usually more on the autistic side than the narcisstic side of personality, which mean more intelligent, but sadly much less efficient, and that's why psychopaths and narcissists rule the world, while INTP's often live in their mom's basement, alone with their solutions for the world's problems, that nobody wants...

    I feel like another factor is lack of social proof with INTPs. Statistically, us INTPs are not high earners; our average salary is the lowest of all 16 types. Thats social proof that matters to people when it comes to listening for advice or wisdom. People put their faith in leaders that society deems "successful". By that standard, we probably seem like idiots for all they can tell.

Problem is, when I do that, people either think I'm socially stupid or just plain rude. While in reality, I just don't like the conformed expectations that society has created. What this video discusses is a perfect example. We are expected to tell this person what they want to hear, however INTPs feel that serves no purpose and isn't helpful.
