  • This spectacular Packard marks the pinnacle of motoring development and style of the Classic Era. We believe this to be the very best 1947 Packard Custom Super Clipper Club Sedan in existence (Model 2106-2125). This is the 2010 Best of Show winner for Packard’s International, arguably the most difficult achievement for a Packard, earning 100 points. She has since been wonderfully maintained and has earned multiple National First place awards with the Classic Car Club of America and the AACA, as recent as 2021. This Packard has also been featured in several magazines, calendars and other publications.
    HISTORY OF THIS PACKARD: This Packard was sold new on June 10, 1947 by Jersey City Packard to the proprietor of the Lechter Shoe Co, Inc. in Jersey City, NJ. She was then acquired by A. Reading Van Doen of Springfield, NJ. The Van Doren family enjoyed this Packard for the next 41 years when it was acquired by Dr. John Dibiaggo, the President of Tufts University in 1992. She was then acquired by Birthe Luddemann in Germany on April 10, 2001. By June 10, 2004, she was acquired by Jay Ball who commenced a complete, no-expense spared restoration by Custom Auto Service in Orange, CA. On December 9, 2012, we helped her find her present owner in Minnesota.
    Everything on this Packard is as-new; this is a 100-point concours car that was thoroughly restored mechanically, electrically and cosmetically to factory new condition. The restoration was conducted with an eye toward perfection, not the pocketbook. Many years and an investment in excess of $160,000 helped to create and preserve this masterpiece. Most all of the restoration was performed by the Packard specialists at Custom Auto Service in Santa Ana, CA. Custom Auto Service is considered the leading Packard authority in all things Packard for the Western US.
    Unlike most 100-point concours motorcars, this Packard drives as-new in every way. Since its restoration, about 4,000 miles have been accumulated. These have included multiple Packard Club and CCCA Tours. It has subsequently been very well maintained and is now fully detailed. There is a wonderful binder approximately four inches thick documenting the history, restoration and servicing of this Club Sedan.
    This is a CCCA Full Classic and arguably the very finest driving motorcar for CARavan’s or classic car touring. These Packard’s are confident on the highway, cruising at 70-80 mph all day long. Its curvaceous lines are absolutely artful and sexy. This is truly rolling sculpture.
    This is the rarest body style with only less than 20 known to be extant. Imagine ordering a top-of-the-line luxury Packard, in a two-door version? These are collected only by the connoisseurs of fine motorcars- and ladies and gentlemen that enjoy driving their motorcars.
    The Vanderbilt Grey livery is stunning. This is the only Club Sedan produced in this stunning color combination. The paint quality today is wonderful, and all of the chrome and stainless-steel trim is excellent, as one would expect from a gorgeous restoration. We would like to add that the lighter colors on these Packard’s make them even more ideal for touring, as it helps reduce the inside passenger compartment temperatures. The wide white walled tires, fully skirted rear wheels and cloisonne accents are stunning.
    The interior is maroon wool broadcloth complimented with gray piping and maroon wool moss tread carpeting. The dashboard and door caps are all gorgeous Pear and Amboyna faux wood grained finishes with ample chrome accessories. The interior is in excellent condition and is ready for concours display. The restorer even had the thought to add a protective cover for the rear package shelf to prevent the eventual degradation from sun damage from the rear window. This Packard is well accessorized with its radio, clock, heater, and dual mirrors.
    At the heart of this great Packard is its drivetrain. The fabulous nine main bearing 356 cu in straight-eight engine is a legend in motoring history. Delivering 165 BHP and nearly unlimited torque, it delivers smooth and powerful driving that is completely dependable. Having a 127-inch wheelbase and coupled with a three speed with overdrive transmission it provides smooth and quiet highway speed touring and decent fuel economy. The Packard advertisements boasted that it was like riding on a magic carpet, not far from the truth if there ever was a magic carpet! This Fabulous Packard is also equipped with the Electromatic clutch, which very closely simulates an automatic transmission for the day. And the engine compartment is in concours condition and is nearly perfect in all respects.
    This motor was made famous by salesmen standing a nickel on its end and having it balance while the motor was idling.

    My '49 Packard Custom 8 with overdrive would get 16 miles per gallon on highways. Love them cloisonne hubcaps

    Packard had some beautiful body styles, over the years. We're nice cars, not fast just good cars that looked good

    I have a 48 22 series. It's all original and just a dream to drive. I do wish I had the overdrive, however.

      Overdrive makes a nice difference if you do a lot of highway driving.

    Be neat to temporarily wire up a tachometer to it to see the rpms values at different highway speeds in the overdrive speed and how that compares to modern overdrive cars.

    Harry, was this the same car that you once discussed with Lance Lambert on Vintage Vehicles? The Clipper Custom Super Club Sedan is perhaps my all-time favorite Packard. What is the asking price? I'd buy it if I could!

      I think it is. I sold it to its present owner in 2012. It is absolutely beautiful and the best of the fewer than 20 in existence. We are asking $98.8k.

      @@ClassicPromenade That's a fair price. It's amazing how much the 5 extra inches of hood improve the looks of the 1946-1950 Packards. I once saw a snapshot of Alvan Macauley and his wife alighting from their 1947 Custom Super Club Sedan. That was near the end of the Macauley era.

    You need a new cameraman! Hate this video he could have showed how to shift at least or other features but nope! Just road shots. Who cares what the road looks like? Just saying
