The unfortunate cook with eastern accent was played by late Polish actor Jerzy Michotek who spent most of his life until 1945 in Lwów (now Ukraine) so his accent was genuine. I was also surprised to see that Ulmbach was released from psychiatric hospital for the trial.
" a Czech printer from Prague who pretended to be an idiot in front of his superiors." The script author has apparently read "Schwejk" and sets a monument here :)
Fun fact: the movie is based on a book called CK Dezerterzy by Kazimierz Sejda that apparently was released just before adventures of Schveik, was forgotten for quite some time until finally the movie was made. PS I've read both books and while CK Dezerterzy is funny at times, Jaroslav Hasek's book is on a whole different level. There's a reason why one book is a classic, and the other one - forgotten.
Even Francis Josef said it was a peculiar anomaly. It was a pastiche of 11 peoples put together over several centuries, some of whom had had their own monarchies ad historical memories like Czech, Poles, Servian, Croatians and Hungarians. It was like something out of the 18th century. From 1860 it made good economic progress in railways, telephone communications, 4th largest maker of industrial and domestic equipment. After the Compromise of 1867 liberal policies were introduced esp. in the Austrian half. The Jews remembered it as the golden age looking back. The Habsburgs spent most of their time trying to herd cats. We all know what followed. The Old Europe died 1914-1918. The lingering remnants finally in 1939-45 fought over by Germany and Russia. The EU puts central Europe back together but it has not recovered from 1914-1991. The last emperor's son got revenge by engineering a festival on the Hungarian border with Austrian in the summer of 1989 that let thru tens of thousands of East Germans thru which helped to bring down the GDR. Honecker said, "Who would have thought a Habsburg would put the last nail in my coffin?" hehehehe
The end of a very inefficient empire living on borrowed time. Serbia was the cause of its final demise. Mother of many nations Austria was left with a huge prestigious capital and a smaller national territory. It is fitting that their last emperor Karl will become a saint.
This is theme song for that movie. As far as my knowlege goes, it is composed by Gyorgy Selmeczy. ua-cam.com/video/AW88qgh9zSs/v-deo.htmlsi=0iMvfnUUUWbpK_kc
