Jesus, you made me buy more junk I don't need.
But secretly totally need.
That's much more fun than running a kilowatt of power into a large Yagi on a rotator.
Well done Andy! 🙂🇦🇺
Funny!! You don't TELL anything
Off the give Auroa and the way way way
Lifted conditons!!!
This setup only Works well

Indeed Kenneth.
But, part of the Ham hobby 'fun' is the various challenges when operating in the 'field' with 'flea power'.
It's just another side of the hobby and a learning process through experimenting.
Happy DXing and 73's from a VK2xxx
Well frankly both are fun😁
@@mikevhx5682
Very true Mike.
For me though, working a station QRP is always very exciting. 73"s de VK2xxx
I think it's really impressive that you can communicate with US operators with just that much kit.
Not to the west coast. :)
Uncle Mike sounds like a legend!
We all need an Uncle Mike in our lives. Top man.
James M, nice to meet you 😂🍻
Agreed
I can't wait to get my license, get a proper antenna, and make my first contact, no matter how small. It was super cool to see you were able to contact someone here in the States. Just goes to show that it takes the right antenna setup, not the tons of power that makes a good contact.
Nice! Here's an idea for you - use the drone to lift up the antenna, suspended under 50 feet of fishing line for noise separation, then take it as high as you can, though the weight of the cables may be too much to get much height and duration.
Yeah you know what I've thought about this, I reckon the DJI fpv would have the power to lift a significant length of small gauge wire, we will have to try that!👍🏻
@@andykirby Yeah, it'd struggle with RG-8/U! Drone would also have to be high enough to be fairly quiet. Lot of tuning involved, but should be a combination that's usable.
A tethered drone could be possible for long duration, but limiting RFI from DC-DC conversion of multi kV power down to low voltage high current for the motors would be challenging.

Great video Andy pleased your making videos on ham radio and CB , hopefully it encourages more people to the hobby, well it’s keeping me motivated to get my foundation done ✅
1. Anyone who goes portable is OK in my books. 2. Anyone who contacts DX stations on the back of a bike is super OK! Congratulations on a great setup and a great video!
Sooo cool. Just incase you didn't already know... You and Uncle Mike are literally living the dream 👍
If I go portable, usually look up the LOC and WAB. If I don't, almost guaranteed someone will ask for them 😄. Thanks for sharing and well done on 15m QSO with Uncle Mike and VE station. 20m end fed wire obviously works on 15m. Good that conditions are finally improving.
Exactly what the hobby is about Andy , great work pal 😀👍
Thanks mate👍🏻
Bikes shape is all like, "Become an Antenna?..

This reminds me of the time in 1991 when I rigged up my President Jackson SSB CB to my bicycle using two 6 volt motorbike lead-acid batteries and an original bow-whip antenna. Was kicking out some good signals on the SSB for only having 10 watts TX, lol
Andy i used to know someone who used to have a CB radio on his push bike in the early eighties we used to laugh at him but man you showed us Ham radio on an Ebike, so cool! And the technology has improved too!I used to be on AM And FM frequencies when you got what we called SKIP we could talk to people on the Isle of Skye and that was from the Isle of Wight.cheers dude Excellent blog
Was it me lol ? I did exactly this with a DV27 antenna and a 12v motorcycle battery and my cybernet beta 1000. It was great fun
@@digitalmediafan do you live on the Isle of wight cause this is where CB on a bike was
@@rogereheadbyrne4790 oh right no I'm in East Sussex. I never thought about anyone else doing this !
Fantastic! I love the FT-891, my favorite radio so far!
I can't believe how good the propagation is on 15 metres. Really good effort.
My brother put an amstrad 901 on a raleigh chopper in the 80s with 2 6 volt motacycle batteries and a tandy mag mount, Good old days :)
Still got my Amstrad 901 Chris, fired it up a few weeks ago and the 19 is alive.. We've been having a right laugh every weekend with more breakers joining in.. Raleigh Chopper eh. Ah memories 👍
@@JD-lk7im Yes thinking of what we call the good old days. I have 3 901s rofl
@@chris_vandepeer.. Japanese made 901's are the most dsirable... (probably the ONLY Alan Micheal Sugar TRADing productuct to remain so..)
@@JD-lk7im I make you right there, Just been putting some radios away toooooo many about the house.
Great video and great video creation. The video is very clear and sharp. I take my FT-891 out pedestrian. I don't have, need or want a car, here in New York City. It's not needed. So I walk my equipment 1 mile to my operating position in Central Park. We are not allowed to put anything on a tree here in the city. Which I don't mind because I don't like the idea of having to throw a wire up and then having to retrieve it later on. I much prefer stand alone verticals, like my Wolf River Coils or MFJ-1979 telescoping whip. I don't have the patients for the wire tree throwing. But thanks for the video. 73 from N2LRB.
Thanks mate. That's cool you operate radio from central park 🙂 maybe we will make a contact one day. Have you worked any UK stations? 15M is usually a good band this time of year for UK-US contacts. 73!
A guy I used to work with 42 years ago put his cb radio in our work van, he used to park the van up and chat to random people on his radio.
He tried to get me into it but I could never see the point of getting into pointless conversations with random people. One day the managers daughter saw us parked up somewhere instead of working and told her dad, my colleague got a bollocking and was nearly sacked when we went back to the office...lol
Given this was more than a year ago, well done on your 10 watts!
QRP portable is an amazing part of the hobby.
73, Matt M0PTO
I've been in the process of doing this on my ebike here in NYC with a GMRS mobile and suddenly I find this video! our laptop and phone mics are definitely listening.
That was a really good setup from the back of an E-Bike with that piece of wire as an antenna great connection nice one.
W4RN Uncle Mike, one of my favourite Radio Buddies. I love the Way he talks german and I enjoy every QSO with him. I use to call him Uncle Mike. All males are Uncles...73's de Your friend Uncle Guenter 😂👍
I have three favorites from England and you are one of them brother! Absolutely awesome!⚡️💚⚡️👍🏻🍻🍺🍻
Thank you sir!👍🏻
45 years ago we had a friend come back to the UK from Oz. He brought back an AM cb radio. We got snowed in so we set it up with just a piece of wire for the antenna. Ended up having a conversation with an American in sunshine. Freek conditions can really surprise you!!
You lucky So & So, you have so many cool toy's to play with, and Ham Brand Name HF or UHF/VHF stuff is so expensive, i have a few Yaesu's FT100D, FT450D, FT707 Complete Setup, and then Chinese UHF/VHF and a heap of CB Gear old and New
Now look what you've made me do...ATU on it's way.
Well done Andy, the higher HF bands are on fire..
Used to have a CB on a pushbike. As well as a car stereo! Great fun blasting music out and meeting new people. Modulator 2 antenna on the basket on the back along with 2 speakers and a battery pack of 10 rechargeable D cells. But those hills...they were a killer.
Brilliant, we've been having fun too up here in Scotland. 💙 ☔
Just got an Ebike and was wondering if this was possible. This is awesome. Thanks for sharing !!!!
Now you have me wanting to put the radio on the ebike I just built. 1500w, 52 volt, 32Ah(heavy) lion battery that I built. 73 WB6JAF, QTH Crockett, Ca.
Cool 😎 ,
My bike set up was , a York 861 CB ( 40 ch fm )
A K40 antenna SWR 1:1 ( no needle lift at all )
Batteries were crapola two square 9v. Spring tops
Later I tried a car batt lol which broke the carrier ...oh dear !
I was 14 ish so 40 years ago now ... glad you tried it.
My pathetic 4 watts would crash out though at Crystal Palace 998ft above sea level.
Do you detect? Seems like you might like it. Being out in the fields and having a love for electronic devices of all sorts. I use my e bike for getting to detecting spots quickly and easily!
Back in the mid 70s my younger brother put a CB Citizen Band radio on his 10 speed bike called himself the peddler he would sit up by the highway talking to the truckers and busting the police jumping on to catch the speeders
stunning stuff Andy, love it. what the hobby is all about.Exactly what im going to be doing in my campervan soon. 73's from M7THX Bromley

Great Fun there Andy..!!!!
I'm going to do this on my horse next year. Parks on the Air on horseback.
Nice one , I’ve operated mobile from my mobility scooter but using a small digital hand held . I wonder if you’ve tried that system. Works a treat . Also have recently bought an SDR transceiver which for the price takes some beating. Best wishes Brian.
I think American Ham Radio Operator should known about 48 volt e-bicycle battery will burn out your radio, as you use separate much lower voltage battery for safely operate your radio..
Fantastic portable with the e/bike , great little compact tuner also 👍
Nice contacts via the Electric Bike! The FT-891 is a great performer and one of my favorite radios. Now subbed...73!
Congratulations Andy 🎊🎉

Mike had a lovely patter.
Good QSO on 15 meters!
Rifle on the front, radio on the back sounds perfect.
Outstanding, esp on 15m,.. cheers Andy !!! 😀
Operate the radio while riding the bike, now that would be impressive!
That’s a mighty strap on ;)
Well done! One day we'll meet on air! Cheers! 73
I wondered why the world has Lithium supply problem
Were could you put the tower, maybe on the back wheel. A helical loop might radiat pretty good. n5qdm is a big fan of loop antenna's who is also an antenna nut.
Is it not possible to run a radio rig direct from the ebike battery?
You could fly your antenna out over the trees by drone. I’m sure u already thought of that.
Blimey states from a bit of wire on a tree - that’s good going. I was hearing US voices on 27mhz on the weekend.
10 meters seems to be opening more and more. Just the other day I spoke with a fellow in San Jose, Costa Rica. I'm just outside San Antonio, TX. 10 watts.
Awesome Electric Bike Portable. I did see the Water tower so know where you were riding. That was wicked. 15 meters has been excellent.
Top class video Andy .. Uncle Mike will stick in my mind for some time ...what a bloke !
Top guy wasn't he!
the annoying thing about HF ham radio is the amount on Italians beaming out 1Kw. it drowns out everyone else
Yep there are a lot of 1kW Italians🤣 but less on a Monday morning.
@@andykirby Every time I scanned 80 and 40 meters it's mostly Italians on an 'event' getting as many sl's as possible in the shortest time.
I dont have the time available to scan in the mornings so that would explain why I don't pick up Radio Hams from America.
Here in the U.S., there’s 10KW Mexicans everywhere on 40. They each produce about a dozen harmonics on the panadapter.
This is a first RadioBike in the peace ! Hi Andy !
de ua3pez / p, i using also ft-891 at the field bay, sorry for my little English
Andy 73 , Nick !
I tested my Yaesu ft 817 on 12 V MC-Battery and MFJ 3 meter long telescopic antenna and a manuell MFJ portable ATU on SSB 4 W from SW-Sweden to South Spain and UK.
Nice work! I had a pretty cool LiPo battery that fit inside my 817, you do need 12V on the 817 to get full power don't you👍🏻
Can the ATU do 80m with that length of wire? 20m wire would be 1/4 wavelength of 80m.
Picking up signals all the way from the states to the UK simply through radio is crazy to me!
Yep, all this gets forgotten in the modern day of the Internet! But when the Internet goes down radio will always be there!
‘Uncle Mic’ …. Secret Santa?
Hi Andy. Great idea bike portable. I have been away from Ham radio for over 15years. Just getting back into it. However I am using 20W max into half Wave long wire. 49 to 1 balun. But so far have been unable to make a single contact on the HF QRP calling freq. SWR is good with a auto ant tuner built into the G90 radio. Reception is good. Maybe it's my G1 callsign they dont like
Cheers from old George
Hey, good stuff! Try responding to someone else's call, I never have any luck calling CQ!
I do really need to try that Band instead of keep going on 40m.. Brilliant Stuff Andy...
Andy ! you are the only one that could do this.
Fun few hours... By the way, I'm not your Uncle Mike, but I am an Uncle Mike. I hope that the other one sees this video!
Love the e bike set up 👍
Nice video Andy, good and clear contacts. Saludos desde Chile CE3TDM.
Hey Andy love the video I had a look through Ur playlist and did not see the video referring to the battery
That was great! that's what ham is all about! I have a dream..... I want the new Polaris EV when it comes out and I want to make it into mobile Ham setup. You need to review the Polaris EV when it comes to out later this year, Lets make it happen.
At home the noise is quite bad it must be a reverlation to have no noise
Should of sent the Ariel up on a drone 🤣
I've got a back problem at the mo so have to use a mobility scooter to get about (I'm only 40) so put a CB on it, works really well lol
Great, Portable and some real DX with USA. Very well done! I'm wondering if you can modify the bike battery to give you power for the Radio. 73s de DO1LR.
You will need Bioenno Batteries to run that transceiver, what about a 16:1 UNUN instead of that ATU to match the long wire antenna to the transceiver, the COBRA 200GTL-DX might have been much lighter than that transceiver and is most certainly not a CB transceiver and you need a licence to operate it.
The battery works great. Its more powerful than BIOENNO. The point of this video was to show a proper portable ham setup, it's not CB 😊
I built an ebike last year with a front hub motor and used it plenty, now it's stopped working. I've checked the wiring connections and all seems OK and I disconnected the brake shut off thinking it could be that, there's still no power going to the hub and when I wheel the bike backward I feel quite a bit of resistance and judder so I think the fault is probably the motor itself, has anyone had this experience or know what it could be?
Good video Andy, 10 degrees means nothing in the US., double it and add 30 for a close faranheit. Post a link for the antenna tuner.
Brilliant working the USA with QRP.
Duct tape is actually mildly conducive, you’re asking for a fire. It’s also very combustible
🤣🤣🤣
For my Foundation exam booked for 20th Nov. I quite fancy the Yaesu FT-5D handheld to begin with and then start setting up a base station although I might have to set up an attic antenna because I love in a new house with all sorts of restrictions about what you can and can't do and I suspect sticking an external antenna up might be a no-no, given that you can't have a caravan, or commercial vehicle on your drive.
That's crazy how they are with new houses these days. Loft antennas can work well, I used to have a home made multi ban fan dipole strung around my loft and it worked very well actually. Good luck with your exam 👍🏻
@@andykirby thank you. Do you have a Full licence?
There's a few books on stealth antennas available, you can run wires along fences, up drains etc, or paint a vertical antenna colours that blend in. I presume they allow tv aerials and satellite dishes so you should be ok with something similar size like a diamond x30. Just ease your neighbors into it.
@@dnel83 Thank you.
Uncle Mike sounded Canadian
you were probably getting more US contacts as the clocks hadn't changed yet their side.
Yep, this was the one I heard today on 40 with the LWF station and was on after you!
Awesome! this new hobby to me never fails to impress :)
Your video just tickled me. Great job Andy.
Andy, have you ever tried a kite antenna? Now that would be pretty trick
I'm just dancing to the backround music! But honestly I've decided to do my foundation licence.
Hey, I'm totally not into CB's, but that was quite fascinating your random chat with the American guy.
A few questions:
1.) Does the internal battery with the voltage converter add much noise to your signal, or are you not using the internal battery and using the same battery as you use for the Yaesu?
2.) You mentioned a video on the battery pack for the Yaesu. Can you provide a link to the video on your small battery pack?
That was a very good idea Andy! I'lltry that, Thank's a lot! The best from LB1NH in Oslo Norway.
I have a question I have the UKC1 controller display In the settings wheel size It says 18 and 20 My Wheel is 19 what do I put my wheel size.
I’ve subscribed mate I’m in love with your video
Awesome, so much fun.
