I would hope it sets up for season two. Three Body Problem is the first book in a trilogy. And yes, Jaby, the books are completed. Thankfully.
Apparently d&d think they can get 4 or 5 seasons. So hopefully the 1st is successful!

Greatest Sci-Fi book ever written, pure SciFi at its best. The book introduced experimental physics most could not imagine possible. There’s no guessing, every book blows your mind to a new level.
People really aren't ready for the feeling of dread this story will bring.

You’re genuinely not prepared. It’s one of the most insane novels I’ve read. It’s from a Chinese author that’s been translated pristinely!

Truth. I have a feeling there are going to be people complaining about how "boring" it is like they did with The Expanse, because they are too lazy to give it a chance.
There is an existing adaptation of the first novel made in China that aired last year and can be seen in the US on Amazon and UA-cam. As an adaptation it is very faithful to the underlying work, which was by a Chinese author and thus sent mostly in China. There has been a lot of changes to characters and settings for an international audience, but that adaptation will give you a very good sense of the themes of the novel.
Honestly I don't think I'd recommend it to people who hadn't read the book first. Being a page for page adaptation means it's kinda drawn out and filled to the brim with exposition. I'm more excited by this adaptation honestly.
@@axelg5I haven't read the book yet but I think I won't until I complete the show. I just wanna go blind. For example, I watched The Maze Runner movies without reading any of the books and I wasn't disappointed, instead I enjoyed them. Meanwhile most of the people who read the novel were heavily disappointed.
@@tusharrajkonwar2378 the Netflix adaptation will be great for general audiences, definitely watch it when it comes out. The Chinese adaptation is.. a lot.
I was blown away watching that version. I only managed to get a few episodes in as like another comment says, it is pretty slow and such. There are a few scenes in the episodes I did watch though that are some of the coolest sci-fi stuff I've ever seen before. Probably going to get back to watching it.
@@axelg5i have not read the book, but as a science enjoyer, I could follow the chinese series. it just take so long to piece everything together. i really enjoy the 3 body simulation because of the iterative experience like an actual experiment. I feel like i am back in the lab working on a problem, and creating my own theory, one of them being that they were on a moon instead of a planet which is wrong buteven learning i was wrong make it exciting. so not reading the book first can still find it enjoyable if you are into science.
The books are sooooooo goood. If the show manages to capture even a portion of their brilliance, we are in for something amazing.

Yes, the Three Body problem is finished, there are two other books, The Dark Forest and The Death's End. The last book is considered to be a little bit rushed by some fans though I haven't read it yet myself.

Knowing how much Jaby loves science fiction, this will be right up his alley. The science concepts in this were so unique when I read the book.
Also the show is based on a trilogy so there most definitely will be a second and third season.
I guess the only thing I'm worried about is for a story that is based in China, there seems to be quite a large British cast.
As for the scale of the story, it's fairly straight forward, but the ideas and concepts explored are pretty interesting. Book one is a detective story, which expands into a larger narrative in the following books. Now that I think about it, it's very similar to the expanse. Where book one is a detective story that then leads to a larger narrative.
Either way, I'm excited to see this take in a classic Chinese SciFi Story.
Now to wait for someone to pick up The Dandelion Dynasty.

I mean judging from the trailer they already dumbed down quite a lot, the series is hard sci-fi and it does seems like D&D took the "hard" out of it.

@@tsukasa1608 The series is definitely not hard sci-fi. It is "hard" in the sense that it seriously analyses the effects of scifi elements on human society, but much of the technology is extremely sketchy at best, scientifically speaking.
They did dumb down the story. They took liberties and change characters. It's boring not gonna lie
No other sci-fi can come close to the three body problem. cannot wait to witness this masterpiece.

I really enjoyed the Tencent series. The book was written by a Chinese author and has a main cast of Chinese characters. However, for the international audience, Netflix split the character of Wang Miao into multiple characters, while keeping two other major characters as Chinese. In the Tencent series, the characters spoke Mandarin with some English and Japanese dialogue. However, in the Netflix series, it appears that the dialogue will mostly be in English and the countdown won't be limited to just one person. Although I preferred the VR version of the Tencent show, where the VR experience in the Netflix series takes away the CGI environment. I'm planning to watch it, but I have to say that I've already fallen for the Tencent version, so it will be hard for me to like the Netflix version more.
Why aren't there any reactions on such a good show on YT?

I found out this was going to be a show when i was halfway through the first book. Just from that, this is going to be some dense stuff.
One of the best sci fi book trilogy I've read... Moment when people are hit with reveal after reveal... And every one of them are such major WTF moments their heads will explode...🤯
When you say the trailer makes it seem that the show is setting up for season 2, the first novel is kinda like an introduction to the second novel when things really start getting crazy so i can see them trying to set up season 2 (hopefully we get one). Based on the trailer the Netflix series seems to be a loose adaptation, nothing bad with that, but the Chinese adaptation is more faithful.

I Watched Annihilation, It was a great Movie. They did good job making monsters and world around the characters, also the horror elements gives really good touch.
Jaby and Achara were wearing the same colour outfits when watching the teaser of this show and now they're again wearing the same colour(almost the same) outfits

As far as I can tell this is based on a trilogy of books which are finished, so we shouldn't have a GoT problem.
Bruh this trailer reminds me of a dream I had during day time when I was sleeping. I saw weird light star pattern in the sky. everything went dark , People were saying "They've arrived ,It has happened , Nothing can be done" , and then my whole body froze along with my breath for few seconds and I woke up. It was frightening. [ Basically I ate too much sweets and slept right away. It was a strong sugar crash , But still I can't forget that experience , It felt like a parallel event where my sugar crash merged with the premonition , It was really weird ]
You really can’t review the trailer without reading the books. The source material is complicated but extremely well written.
This show could be an all timer if it is allowed to have multiple seasons and a big budget 🙏🏽

Having read the book, I'm not totally over the moon about what I've seen so far. I feel like there's a missed opportunity to have this from a more visionary filmmaker like Spielberg or Christopher Nolan or Bong Joon Ho.
The TV series adaptation of the book from China was 30 @45 minute episodes. Just an FYI and that was very faithful to the book.
And that’s just for book 1. Netflix is probably adding elements from all 3 books and it’s only 8 episodes. It might work but it definitely won’t be the full experience Hopefully It’ll get more people to read the books though.

from the trailer you see that they've replaced the main character, who was a Chinese man with a woman, the action doesn't seem to take place in China and Benedict Wong doesn't seem like a good fit for the Detective(mostly because his to likeable) - they do seem to have changed a lot from the book.
haven't finished the first book, but they are definitely leading to the second book that everyone says is the best.

There is no fantasy, at least not how it typically comes across. It's straight up scifi, you just don't have context on some things in the trailer

This is why I hate trailers.. this trailer revealed everything about the story. Why watch when you know whats going to happen. And I'm not ttalking about reading the books. Just solely based on the trailer.. one can figure out exactly whats going on and whats what.
I prefer watching a show with fresh eyes and clear mind, learn and figure it out the more I watch.

The first book is by far the weakest, even though it's really good. The second and third book are completely mind melting.
They finally did make this stupid show😂, I’ve been waiting since 2008 hoping for a tv adaptation.
Benedict Wong is great casting as Da Shi; he's always a delight in anything he's in, tbh, and he looks suitably scruffy and gruff here.
However, I'm very much not sure about this show. The novels are ultimately about the human condition, and this trailer looks too much like style over substance.
I hope they manage to write the women a bit better, because most of the women in the novels are pretty much one-dimensional - or two-dimensional at best.
I do like Benedict but or some reason while reading the books he was not fat in my mind. And what do you mean that the ladies are not great? Ye Wenjie and Cheng Xin were what drove me to finish it sooner.

Ye Wenjie and Cheng Xin: Yeah I wrote "most". That's two, out of eleven (IIRC). Those two have agency, but one dooms humanity once, the other dooms humanity twice and then contemplates dooming the entire universe. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of strong female characters (and I use the term "strong" in a pretty broad sense for Cheng Xin).

Other than Da shi and Luo Ji the male characters were pretty bland as well. Feminist will never be content. I think both Ye Wenjie and Cheng Xin were great characters. Ye Wenjie is DEFINITELY a strong female character and Cheng Xin was the most human character in the series. Women in fiction don’t always HAVE to be “strong female characters” or even good people. Sorry but these complaints always irritate me.
@jon_odinson Compare the number of male characters with agency to the number of female characters with agency.
The difference is pretty damn huge.
It doesn't take much to write strong female characters - you just have to write a good character who isn't just there to support someone else.
@@heavycritic9554 How about you give me a list of what you consider to be strong male characters with agency and I try to match it with their female counterparts.
Also, not all female characters NEED to be “strong female characters” just like not all male characters need to be strong male characters.
This is my main issue with people like you, no offense. First people complain about not enough female characters in sci-fi. The authors write more female characters and then you complain that they’re not good enough or not strong female characters. Especially in a genre that’s never really been known it’s developed characters.
This story has female protagonists, antagonists, in positions of power, likable, unlikable. What more do you want? An exact 50% ratio of female to male characters and character archetypes? That’s just ridiculous in my opinion.
