A Japanese movie based on German folklore analysed by an Italian
*WW3 intensifies*
The japan in jin roh is a alternate universe where germany won, therefore in the post war time the japan gov. bought germany weapons. The rebels use allied weapons since they lost so they use old weapons
The movie literally opens with the atom bomb exploding and the narrator refers to the post-war limits imposed on the Japanese army, i do not think it takes place in an universe where japan won the war, there is also no mention of the emperor which would have had political power if that was the case. Is any case i do not think this matters at all since the story doesn't mention foreign powers once outside the prologue.
@@GnorriTV its the past where germany won and developed the atomic bomb, you can see german soldiers in pgotographs, all officals wear german style clothes and all weapons and cars are german
You can also read on the internet and old interviews. Thats why its so subtle so it doesent take away from the story yet its there to see
Interesting, thanks for sharing
@Hans S Germany wins through using magic power armor no one has any defence against in 1942 somehow, despite it only really guarding against small arms and shell fragments. Thankfully the power imbalance is slightly less pronounced by the 1960s, when Jin Roh takes place. It's a ridiculous premise, which somehow is a point in Jin Roh's favor because the movie seems so believeable and grounded despite its stupid backstory.
@Hans S Actually, it could make a fair bit of sense (maybe minus the power armor). In the backstory (if I remember it correctly), Japan's military leaders obey the emperor and withdraw from China instead of attacking Pearl Harbor. This keeps the US from joining the war immediately and gives Germany some breathing room. Hitler is assassinated and one of his generals takes his place, focusing funding on creating nuclear weapons. By the time the US and Japan join on the side of the allies, it's too late and Germany forces the allies to surrender by dropping the atom bomb. Don't quote me on this, I don't remember where or when I read it
The bullet impact and ragdolling effects in the original is just insane
I heard someone once explain the reason for the "Little Red Riding Hood" analogy. It's to demonstrate the theme of a loss of innocence in a way. I myself, while watching was observing what this analogy was leading to. It was obvious the one way it could be seen: Fuse was in control of the situation for a long time and knew the plan. He was unhesitant in killing all his enemies and he probably expected he would be forced to kill Kei eventually. However, it also becomes clear after the secret meeting that Kei is also attempting to manipulate Fuse and this even results in him becoming emotionally distressed in the last part. The point of this double-analogy is to show how there is no simple "wolf and girl" story here. They're both the wolf and both the little girl. The last shot of the book in the puddle symbolizes the death of the simple beliefs that are held on to.
The Wolf Brigade is supposed to be a tragedy as it deals with idyllic innocence being consumed by real life. The female protagonist just can't accept that she's dealing with a killer until it's too late. It also shows a slow, degradation of humanity by the male protagonist until the 'wolf' sits in his skin and clothing.
The modern interpreation ruins the story by turning a rightful tragedy into an action film. It doesn't make sense anymore.
Pretty much
Action films are fine, but Jin Roh isn't the way to do it.
@@ironstarofmordian7098 he was saying Illang is the action film, jin roh tells a story
There is Park Chung-hee, an authoritarian President and part of 70’s political turmoil (I mean it was global, like PLO, Iran Revolution, Black Panther Party, Weather Underground, Watergate Scandal, Japanese Red Army, Red Army Faction, and hijackings).
But people-at least older people even justifying his youth re-education program-do like Park, also elected his daughter.
okay but also there's a cool guy in black armour with a big fucking gun
they used german weapons in the anime because it's an alternate universe we're the axis won WW2 instead.
Just a quick note about the MG3 used in the live action:
The rate of fire is way too slow. Thing sounds like it's chugging away at around 600rpm which is closer to an M60.
It should be about twice as fast at 1200rpm
It’s called fiction for a reason my friend. It’s a different take on things and it’s about the story and the characters in it. Not how authentic this gun works or how an explosive going off so close to someone even in armor doesn’t knock him around. They sometimes call it artistic license or cinema poetry and I bet a few other names similar in definition. Take iron man for instance, him smacking an f-22 when they are hailing ass should have killed him from the impact alone at that speed regardless of the armor. Not to mention when the missed blows up behind him the concussive blast from the explosion being that close would turn his insides to jelly.
@@MrEWWWW ok i know this is 2 months old but i just have to say this mg42s exit we know what they sound like what the look like we know its rate of fire we've seen mg42s in action iron man doesnt exist never will probably so we cant get a grasp on what its like
@@MrEWWWW also its a goddamn superhero movie not a movie about physics superhero movies arent realistic in the slightest
I also noticed that the weapon has lost its terror in the movie. I think it's a bit of a shame, as it made the wolf look even more dangerous. The MG42 was also called the Bone Saw in the past and is still used today in a weakened form as the MG3. Originally it could achieve insane firing frequencies, as I understand the weapon got faster and faster the longer you stayed on the trigger.
@@LP.G I wouldn't say the the MG3 is a weakened version.
It was rechambered to NATO 7.62x51, and it's fire rate was adjusted to roughly 1200rpm.
The ww2 versions had a rate of fire anywhere between 900-1600rpm. Which, though terrifyingly fast, also ate trough ammo stupidly fast.
Even today the troops operating the MG3 have to learn a very strict firing discipline.
the wolf brigage AKA:the Cerberus panzer unit is the Military police using german equipment
and the bomb was dropped by germny
in,case you didnt know
I think Germany in this universe sided with the Allies after Hitler was successfully assassinated in July of 1944. And because of that, they helped America and her Allies defeat and occupy Japan.
Japan sided with the allies in ww2 and America did not participate
in both World Wars, germany defeated the allies and invaded Japan.

Nice pun with the 42
the original it is kinda slow burnt, but i found the remake boring, even if it has more action, i just couldn't stay watching the hole thing, it was just boring, while i love the original one, less action, but a very interesting context and story.
The Korean version tried to make enough of the movie different from the original. Wasn't as bad as other remakes thankfully.
Also your channel is underrated, this video is really good!
That fall from the building would have either broken their spines or bisected them from the speed they achieved before reaching the end of the hose's length.
I recognize that Rise of Nations music in the background. Exquisite choice of soundtrack.
Original anime was definetly a slow burn. Did not like it the first time watching. Re watched it a couple times and grew to appreciate it. One of the best animes out there.
good job man, a really good job
Tbh between the one at 0:04 and 0:13 I like the first one more it's more intimidating and powerful you have this giant man with a weapon the size of a jackhammer a walking tank unstoppable then after it you get some random swat guy
God this is a underrated channel.
The Korean movie is Wolf Brigade in name only, it feels like a fan-fiction that was backed by movie studio
This is super interesting. I'm going to watch the movie and then come back here to watch this video. Thanks for the content.
14:09 FG-42 (Paratrooper) great review, greetings 👍🙋♂️
The world in conflict music gives me nostalgia
Yeah I love that game. It's on my list, I'll cover it sooner or later
@@GnorriTV Nice, definitely subbing
Illang on its own isn't inherently "bad" it's just a lazy and formulaic action film, as an adaptation of Jin-Roh however it bastardizes the entire point of the original film and waters the complex plot down to very shallow conflict and is a pale imitation of the source material. Jin-Roh just didn't _need_ a live action interpretation, I think there were two or three other live-action Kerberos films in the 90's in Japan (I've only seen one called Red Spectacles years ago) that had different stories I don't know why they couldn't have just made another one of those with a different story altogether. People still would have recognized the armor and gave it a watch, copying the story of Jin-Roh and changing it so heavily to me seems like a setup for failure from the start.
the anime is just reboot of the two lived action movies and is very art house film.
0:10 Why armor was not bigger that anime
My guess is that an exact recreation either looked bad or was impractical , still, i feel it's a good rendition of the armor
In the Korean adaptation it makes absolute no fucking sense that the posters are written in Germany and the German military gear, it is absolutely out of place. The convoluted twisting of the story towards a Korean reunification narrative made no fucking sense, it breaks all the masterful subtle symbolism and the context of the original plot. They didn't fucking get the context of Jin-Roh, and kept the cool looking visuals without understanding the source material.
The Korean version doesn’t make sense. Major powers like the US and Russia would never be “fearful of a unified Korea”. It’s a bloody peninsula surrounded by major powers. Just feels like a Pro-Korean propaganda movie. Realistically, a major power will always hold heavy influence in the Korean Peninsula. It’s basically the Poland of Asia.
Also, when did the Korean government become a fan of fascist aesthetics. Half the population were Communists! Wouldn’t it make sense for the armor and weapons to be based off of China, Japan, or the US? The Korean version tries so hard to copy Jin-Roh but in all the wrong ways!

The sewer scene makes for amazng Music video material though
It’s ironic yet sad the most iconic in all of Jin Roh, regardless of the version is the armored SS units…Don’t lie to yourself, we all know that’s what they’re supposed to be… and literally nothing else. Jin Roh is a masterpiece of visual media even today, gives a deep look into the nature of humankind, was ahead of its time, and is truly iconic in pop culture. It’s just the latter two are for the wrong reasons, and the why was *not* the creators intention. Wolfenstein, Killzone, among others owe so much to Jin Roh yet have none of the subtly, nuance, or philosophical concepts. They found their success in that they realized what the audience for this sort of thing is and marketed appropriately, but embraced the fact that people don’t watch things like Wolfenstein or Killzone for philosophical themes or exploring interesting concepts. I mean, sure you *can* have them… like how Doom can have a genuinely interesting plot, story, and setting… but that’s *not* why you came here or what you’re looking for.
I am genuinely afraid to meet the makers of Jin Roh, because of how they must feel that a minor aspect of their creation, armored SS soldiers raising hell, is now the mascot for both it and similar settings rather than the message of the story or even the wolf.
It’s like Metal Gear Rising all over again. The creators and specifically the writers were too focused on the philosophical concepts, deep messaging side, and too unaware of the target audience, that no one saw what they were actually doing or creating and when they did it was years past the point of no return and too late to course correct so they dropped the spin off idea entirely.
Though to be fair, in the original anime movie; the main character is literally Japanese Nazi in an alternate universe where the Axis powers/Nazis won WW2, so that might have been in part as to why people didn’t get behind the story, themes, or message.
that is not how the little red riding hood ends...
here comes the hunter and rescues the grandma and little red riding hood...
A bit late, but the gun at 14:09 looks to be an STG44 without the magazine inserted. the vents on the handguard and the stamped ribbing all over matches up with it.
@14:09 I believe that is a CETME/H&K G3
Underrated channel
Thank you!
Korea: hand grenade luncher goes vooommmppp
So that means it was a great reference to the infamous line of the movie.
I'm sorry I'm not sure what you mean by that.
I mean, illang this Korean movie was a reference to Japanese film Jim goh is it?
@@HellCorps The Korean movie is a live action adaptation of the Japanese animation with some other changes like setting, a few story beats and the overall message.

fun to hear rise of nation soundtrack
If you're interested I reviewed that recently.
13:40 Yea that is a lot of german weapons but the movie was after WW2
I watched the Korean version movie tho. Pretty legit
It's not bad, there are certainly worse remakes/live action adaptations out there, it's just kind of different and perhaps needless but you're not wrong for liking it.
@@GnorriTV Also maybe narrative being Korean Nationalism (as stated fear of foreign power clamping down on reunification, and Korea being powerhouse from unification) compared to Mamoru Oshi' cynical commentary on 70's Japanese turmoil (Japanese Red Army and the birth of Ultranationalism).
How do you fuck up the fire rate of the MG42?
The Jin Roh is Wolfenstein Germany who won the War! The Nazi and the Little Ridding Hood...I need Wolfenstein.....
Korean version is like 2029 future of Korea?
The korean version is set in the near future but unlike Jin-roh its background isn't alternate history
Oh if there is a Wolfenstein
The Nazi and the Little Ridding Hood...
Netflix conversions of anime exist because they couldn't pay the creators & they're for people who do not want to be associated with weebs or just hate animation, these are often the same people that are happy as long as movie does flashy colors.
The reason the korean movie have "no fingers pointed" as you put it, or was more clearly political instead of tip toeing arround the subject is because south korea has strict laws about it and would censor the movie if the movie in any way annoyed the state
iirc, the backstory includes the Nazis winning the war and doing to Japan what America did irl, with the atom bombs and such.
The manga/anime world of JIN-ROH has a different history than reality.
The United States did not enter World War II, nor did Japan declare war on the United States.
The U.S. maintained its Monroe Doctrine. Japan maintained its 1902 alliance with Great Britain. Thus, when the Nazis declared war on Britain, Japan joined the war as Britain's ally.
Thus, World War II in this world was fought between the Allies of Great Britain, France, Japan, and the Soviet Union and the Axis forces of Italy and Germany. In this world, Hitler is assassinated in a German military coup, but the war continues, and Germany defeats and overthrows the Soviet Union and Great Britain, and then drops an atomic bomb on Japan, ending the war.
In other words, Japan is defeated in the world of JIN-ROH, but it is Germany, not the U.S., that rules Japan. The Japanese military destroys most of its weapons and replaces some of the obsolete weapons with German-made weapons, although some are used by the police force.
Also, the Self-Defense Forces exist in this world, but since the historical Self-Defense Forces were created during the Korean War, it is interesting to see how they were created in the world of JIN-ROH.
Since the Soviet Union and Japan were overthrown by Germany, how Korea is treated in that world remains a mystery to this day, since the original author, Mamoru Oshii, did not speak of it.
The world setting was redesigned for the Korean live-action film adaptation. The Korean peninsula in this world is divided into North Korea and South Korea as in historical fact, so the story probably proceeded as it did in reality until WW2.
Personally, I would have liked to see a Korean version of "JIN-ROH" with Mamoru Oshii's worldview. What did Germany do with the Korean peninsula after defeating Japan? Since the Soviet Union was also defeated by Germany, the Korean peninsula would have come under German control.
The anime was set in the 1960s, and I think the drama should have continued that setting. It is quite hilarious to wear a Fritz Helm and carry an MG42 in the present day.
Illang was like fuck this movie. Lol the disrespect to the original film was real from the korean whack version.

when looking at the special unit doesn't get helghast vibes from Killzone?
@Steve Kef
You could jokingly say that the Special Unit are the Japanese ancestors of the Helghasts before KILLZONE was created.
“The Japanese Helghasts of the Helghasts.”
But yeah. The Special Unit does give me Helghast vibes.
9:48 haha mg42 go brrrrr
Has anyone said that the sect brigade look like the Germans in Wolfenstein
So a shit as I thought then. Strange use of rise of legends music in there but fair enough
The ending is the core of the story. Remake destroyed it for a cookie cutter media news, all arrested ending. All they wanted was the cool costume. Movie doesnt deserve the WOLF in the title as there is no wolf in this movie. Its a happy ending turd.
Vedo il nome del canale, sento l'accento, mi sento a casa.
I liked Il Lang better. If you create a movie about a special unit equipped with armor and automatic guns, that better be the focus. Not as a hook for me to read your fucking philosophy paper.

You need to look into the lore you don’t know what your talking about
If a movie won't make any effort to make the lore known then it isn't my fault. However Many comments have pointed out What the backstory was but, while I thank them for the feedback, the lore doesn't really matter for either the movie itself or for this comparison between the original and the live action.
Lore is to expand a world or story, it shouldn't be based off it.

The reason why in the anime the rubber bullet hurts is because it’s like a hammer. The hammer isn’t going to penetrate but it’ll crush. It’s the force. It knocked them back and the air out of them. In the anime the two rookies are knocked down and the trainer shoots them between the armor.
he was shooting them on the parts that were un armored in the training to reinforce they could be wounded I thought
