Thank you very much, Danny, for this tour through the eras of classical music! I love the sound quality of Reference Recording's Symphony Fantastique. How do you rate the musical performance there? With warmest regards, Ron
Rasant, luftig und flott! 🤣 I quite like it - I mean there’s SO many orchestras and conductors covering this evergreen it’s hard to pick your favorite!
DG original source has reignited my appreciation for classical. And with so much OG DG, EMI and Philips available on the 2nd hand market, it’s a rich genre to dive into, because historically, most of the OG owners really took care of their records. And it can sound amazing. I’ve yet to be burnt by a OG D-Gram.
Thank you for pointing it: There is no word to describe the beauty of the Meyer Debussy !! the most luxurious LP piano edition of the last 60 years ! it is simply fantastic, highly recommended - it's not a re issue but a full analog FIRST EDITION on vinyle , world premiere - A MUST , a handcrafted edition, equivalent quality to ERC productions.
@@SonicFlare yes you did ! you said " reissue" at 7'36"....as at the contrary their editorial choices are NOT to do "just reissues" ( what most of the others do ) but at the contrary publish world premiere LP's, of the highest historical interest; they made long researches to find out " what should have been published, what wasn't ".. - for some reasons. That's what their website explains in details
I'm not into classical music, but I learned a lot from you. I did have to chuckle when you said, "That's the classical period of classical music." I've tried listening to a couple of audiophile classical records. I'll give some of your recos a try! :)
Wonderful to hear you extolling the virtues of classical! I am SO jealous you have that Marcelle Mayer reissue. She is one of the greatest pianists few have heard of, and her recordings are sublime. I have an excellent EMI CD box set of all her recordings, but to have these Debussy recordings on primo vinyl - how sweet! Just wish that price was more within my range! Ask your friend if he is planning to reissue her recordings of Bach and French Baroque - they are exquisite. (That book looks wonderful, btw). Speaking of DG's Original Source, I just published my piece on Tracking Angle about the upcoming Karajan/Bruckner box which will be mastered directly from 8-track (yes, 8-track), owing to the brilliance of the team over at Emil Berliner Studios. And if you don't have it already, hunt down the Ozawa Symphonie Fantastique in the OS series - it's my favorite of them all and smokes that Kojian version. Enjoy the snow!!!
Mark! So cool and honored you watching the show… love reading your stuff, you’re a walking encyclopedic institution!!! As soon as I saw your post, I preordered lol. Yes, I have the Ozawa … insane!!! Cheers man!
@@SonicFlare I've been a fan since you started the channel! Thanks so much for your kind words - coming from you that's high praise indeed! Looking forward to seeing the new studio/listening room!
Well done that man! 🙂 Goldfrapp one week and classical music the next, wow! 😃 I had an all classical listening session on Sunday, Mozart's Flute Concerto No1 in G major, Mahler's epic Symphony No 9, Soprano Lise Davidsens recital of Strauss songs and Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending. All on CD, not necessarily audiophile recordings but thoroughly enjoyable all the same. Great video so keep up the good work! 🙂
Love it, thanks mate! You should find a copy of Mahler 3 with Mehta……. Royce hall. 1981 I think? Absolutely spectacularly insane!!! Cheers for tuning in!
Wonderful, thanks for the inspiring video- like always! And very entertaining and funny, thank you! 😀 Unfortunately I don't have €600 to spare for the Meyer LP right now, I'll keep an eye out for the CD box "Marcelle Meyer - Ses Enregistrements 1925-1957" from EMI for the time being - which contains all Debussy - even if it won't be audiophile! Marcelle Meyer is a real new discovery for me! Thank you so much for that. DGG has unfortunately never made really great sounding records, I own a lot of them. However, I think Bartok Piano Concertos Nos. 1 + 2 with Pollini and Abbado are really great. Pollini died a few days ago. I will listen to this recording again over Easter. I also really like the Pollini recordings of Debussy's works. I've often heard him in concert. Thanks again and toi toi toi!
Cheers and thanks for the kind words, always! I keep hearing people talk about tue CD box, I should look for that myself. DGG is definitely hit or miss, mostly miss as you called it out. There’s a ton of great performance that sound like squashed meatballs that are a few days past sell date. However, as with all, there’s a few gems you find now and then; my old listening buddy and I would always jokingly refer to it “when the engineers weren’t drunk after Oktoberfest”……………. These new 4 channel reissues are really all superb!
@@SonicFlare Thank you! I was lucky to get the EMI box today at a reasonable price. I am excited. What I'm listening to on Tidal to get to know her playing is really impressive! Thanks again. Without your input, this pianist would have remained unknown to me. Yes, I'm also following the Original Source series with interest and so far Stravinsky's Sacre with Abbado & the London Symphony Orchestra and Gilels' Beethoven has impressed me the most. The Stravinsky-LP It sounds absolutely three-dimensional and fantastic. BUT, for example, in the Original Source-mastering of Symphony No. 7 with Kleiber and the Vienna Philharmonic, the strings sound very shrill to me - in comparison with a 1984 pressing from DGG I own... so this is very odd. As a string-player, I have played in orchestras myself and listened to many concerts... it was never that shrill-sounding. I don't know on which systems it should sound great... And another thing: I honestly have the impression with most of the The Original Source`s so far that the sound is very left-heavy. It would be really interesting to hear what you think. Maybe you'll include something about it in your next "Classics" video! All the best! Take care
Baroque period - Bach Toccata and Fugue. Classical period - Mozart Requiem. Early Romantic period - Beethoven 3rd symphony. Late Romantic period - Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No2 (Was a 20th century composer but music very much of the late Romantic period). Late Romantic/Modern crossover period - Mahler Symphony No2. Modern period - Shostakovich Symphony No5. NB. Give any piece several listens as it takes some time to appreciate the music.
It’s in the video comments and link, also, as I said in the video, it’s Jean-Marc Harari, who also issued the Meyer Debussy record I discuss. Pay attention Charlie! 🫨😜

Merde! Clearly, I need to go back to Kindergarten to start all over again!!! 😵💫
i hope that Deutsche Grammophone has made changes to the noise levels on their records, i have dozens that are very noisy.
Wow! Hmmmmmmmm mine are all genuinely quiet copies… maybe pressed Tuesday instead of Monday 😂
Do you notice this with the originals or the recent pressings? My originals are OK, but the recent albums have all been terrible.
@terrywho22 hmmmmmmm nope, silent on my end… wonder if you got a bad press as others are complaining about it too?

Oh Mahler 9. Such an epic symphony. I've seen it live several times.
My version is on CD, Deutsche Grammophon 478 6973, at 80 minutes and 3 seconds it is the longest running CD in my collection! 🙂
